That looks like a fun day!

BTW, I have heard of retiring a number. Other than hanging a jersey up in the rafters or on a wall, what does retiring a jersey mean?
New season, new team, new dream . . .

I think it means nobody else will ever wear that number.

Yes. It theoretically will not be worn again. As the article mentions, Mike's #31 will be only the third men's number retired by Bucknell, following Al Leslie's #22 and Moose Danzig's #44. There are also two women's numbers that have been retired.

We were just talking about how we couldn’t believe Mike’s jersey wasn’t retired last game when Al Leslie was talking at halftime. He deserves it.

When was Leslie's retired? Wasn't Bryan Cohen #22?

I remember that Leslie's number was retired when McNaughton was still there - maybe 2007. Cohen iirc was #4.

Edit: I just realized that Matt O'Reilly wore #22 for all four years. And Oberfeld was #44. Not sure why that would be allowed, with the jerseys retired. Things like that do happen - which is why I used the term "theoretically" in my original post.

I think that the men's program wasn't going to retire the numbers, which is a bit silly, but just retire the Jersey with the Name on it. Other players have worn #22 since Al, and others have made it in to the HOF having worn #22 so its a difficult thing. There was quite a period of time where the Mens Program/Bucknell did not believe in Retiring numbers. But that obviously has changed as AD's and coaches changed.

Cohen was #22 per on-line roster

Yeah, I thought we just hung it to honor the player, without cancelling the number from future use.

I stand corrected. He was #22 early in his Bison career and then switched to #4.

Seneca a bit different from Cohen, however, since the jersey/number was not retired until 2006.

It seems odd to retire the jersey and not the number, but that's what seems to be happening here. Although legend has it that the Washington Bullets literally gave Rasheed Wallace's old jerseys to Ben Wallace after they drafted him, so maybe that's all Bucknell is promising not to do.

I dig the Bucknell approach. There's something I don't like about taking numbers out of circulation.

i had the vague impression (not at all Bucknell related) that some places retire jerseys for their greats, but reserved retiring a number for a superstar amongst this level of greats.

Maybe I am missing something, but I’m not sure I get what “retiring the jersey” but not the number even means. So the number will continue to be used but not the Jersey with that particular name? So no more players named Leslie or Danzig or Muscala can wear the Bucknell jersey? I am being silky but still, I don’t get it. Perhaps it is better to simply say Bucknell is honoring those players by displaying their jerseys. Using the verbiage “retiring” just doesn’t make sense.

Mr. Phillie, I pretty much asked the same question above. I have never heard of retiring a jersey. Maybe honoring Mike Muscala by permanently hanging up his jersey at Sojka Pavilion is more appropriate way of describing it.

In a sport that can only offer 36 numbers to begin with, retiring numbers is not a good tradition to start. It can put future coaches in a difficult position if a highly-touted recruit has a strong affinity for a number that is not available because of someone who played 50 years ago.

I agree that "retiring jerseys" isn't the answer either ... confusing to most. The Dallas Cowboys haven't retired one number. Rather, they honor their all-time greats in their Ring of Honor. It seems to me a better way to distinguish your all-time special players from your Hall of Fame players. If you want to hang the jersey in the ring of honor, I'd be cool with that. In Bucknell's case, I think it's fun to see the evolution of our color usage in jerseys over the years.

Before it gets too far down the road, the admin may want to develop some type of standard. Jen Walz was the women's program first great scorer, but I don't know that her career is more distinguished than several men's and women's players from the last decade. No questions about Leslie, Muscala and Molly Creamer, IMO.
