For the Yale game, the matchups were obvious. Not so for Harvard. If the same guys play for Harvard as the last couple of games, I assume a bunch of different guys could get a shot at guarding Kirkwood. My guess is Martz gets first crack, but it also could be Smith or Williams. Even Mosh could get a shot. And Monroe when he is in. If Ledlum plays, it gets a lot trickier, as I assume Martz or Mosh has to guard him, and your choices get a little more limited for Kirkwood. Like Princeton and Yale, Harvard will be small (again assuming there isn’t a sudden return from injury of a big or two). My guess is that is a good thing for Mosh, and he may be active again (as he was against Princeton in particular). While there may be some temptation to play without a big since Harvard is doing it, I think we want to avoid just playing 5 guards against 5 guards. Harvard’s talent may win out in that scenario. Better to differentiate by making them deal with Mosh and maybe Spinoso.

There is ZERO question that Monroe should be the guy on Kirkwood. If Ledlum is not playing, no one else is likely to break loose---put our best defender on their major weapon and don't double.
As for Mosh, how did that work out against Princeton? I'm happy with Mosh taking it to the hoop twice like Willis the first two times down the court to get respect and then never taking another shot--playing high post point center for the rest of the game.

Well, the Mosh question against Princeton is an interesting one. He arguably outplayed a guy who may be the league POY. So I think of Princeton as instructive. Mosh was active and effective— until we took him out of the game and tried to play 5 guards. So Mosh only played 24 minutes in that one, and we lost. Against Yale, while Moshkovitz took far fewer shots (and didn’t make many of the ones he did take), we stuck with the bigger lineup and won. So I’m advocating sticking to what we did against Yale, rather than what we did against Princeton.
On the Monroe thing, we’ve been playing much better on defense with the starting lineup we’ve been using in league — I’m not inclined to mess with it. At this point, I’m not sure who our best defender actually is, as more guys are defending well now. Martz and Smith draw the toughest assignments consistently, and have been doing a great job of it. The job on Swain obviously was unbelievable. Williams has come on defensively as well, probably because we’re not playing top 100 teams all the time.

Kirkwood is 4-5 inches taller than Swain and a lot stronger. We need the athleticism of Monroe against him.

I like Monroe in the game. There is only one ball on offense and we have plenty of shooters (although some can't create) so I'd give significant minutes to our best lock down defender.
I can't figure out why in a big games like Yale Laczkowsi (sp) played more minutes despite his inexperience than Monroe.

I think he was hoping he would hit a couple of threes, given how abysmal the shooting was in the game by the regular rotation. Vince has mentioned more than once in recent games that the kid is apparently torching the nets in practice.

I agree. Laczkowski is a more aggressive offensive player than Monroe. That's clearly the role Steve had him in the lineup for. It didn't work out but he sure shot it when he had the chance.

I also think they ask Monroe to do something other than be a lockdown defender. They seem to use him a little more as a
chaotic or switching defender. So the idea seems to be to use his energy and athleticism to move around more and get into spaces on defense where you might not expect him to be.

Good thing the game was moved to tonight. Tomorrow could be lots of snow in the Boston area.

I’m a little surprised they’re playing. If the game ends at 7, perhaps they’ll hit the road by 8. That should be fine for getting out of the Boston area, but the much of the trip will be in the heart of the storm. If it weren’t for prior cancellations around the Ivies, I would not have been shocked if the full slate got postponed.
Cue P38 to tell his Brown ‘78 story. I haven’t heard it for a while.

But it gets better each time. Especially the National Guard tanks and the card game with Booney.

Did I tell you the one about landing in Bosnia and ducking as we came under fire? It was during the famous Jerome Italy trip.
