Now that the 2019 class appears to be set, it's time to start the next year. Deuce Turner, a 6-2 SG from Malvern Prep visited last week and came away with an offer. Turner, as a soph, was 1st team All-Main Line and 3rd team All-State while averaging 20.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, and 3.0 apg. Here are the 2020 recruits identified thus far. There are likely others, so please let me know if I've missed some. - Name . . . . . . Height. . Pos . . State . . . BU Offer/Date . . . . . Other Offers - Turner , Deuce 6-2 SG (PA) BUCKNELL OFFER Sep-2019 ; Unofficial visit Sept. 2019 - Kolaja , Luke 6-8 PF (NJ) BUCKNELL OFFER Jun-2019 ; Penn, Boston U, LC - Leyte , Bas 6-10 PF/C (Netherlands/NH) BUCKNEL L OFFER Apr-2018 ; Reclassified to 2020; Milwaukee, Q'pac, Lafayette, Siena - Santiago , Angelo 6-5 SF (CT) No Offer ; Unofficial visit Aug. 2019

Bison coaches have been active recently in looking at potential 2020 recruits. Players who Joe Meehan looked at this week include: - Robby Devries 6-3 CG (TX) - Grant Bulmash 6-5 wing (TX) - attends the Greenhill School, where Jaye Andrews coached for a number of years. - Drake Muller 6-5 wing (TX) - also plays for Greenhill. - Tay Mosher 6-6 SF (TX) - 2021. One advantage of BU having finished up the 2019 recruiting is that there is a lot more time to scout out 2020 players and develop relationships. Note that none of the above players have offers at this point. Whether any of them get an offer will depend mostly on how they play over the next nine months.

Will play AAU with Team Durant." https://twitter.com/HillBBasketball/statu s/1110676... Dorsey has offers from Lehigh, Loyola, and UMBC. He plays for the Hill School in PA.

Two more offers: 1. Ryan Evans 6-3 SG (CA) who plays for Mater Dei. Offers from Air Force, UC-Irvine, and Dartmouth. 2. Andre Henry 6-1 PG (CA) also from the LA area. Offers from UC-Irvine, Montana, and Cal Northridge. With three scholarships available, I think the top priority is a pure PG, preferably a small, quick one who can defend. My second priority would be a big center - at least 6-9 - who can rebound and defend. Then third I'd like a SG/SF who can score and get to the basket.

Two more offers: 1. Jackson Threadgill 6-6 170 lb wing (NC) - Davidson Day School; Offers from Charlotte, App State, W&M, JMU. 2. Jeron Artest 6-4 CG (CA) - LA Area; Offers from St. John's (old regime), Cal-Irvine, Wyoming, and UT-Martin. Father is Ron Artest ("Metta World Peace"). I imagine Artest is a long shot, but his addition would make for an interesting backcourt with him combining with the sons of LaPhonso Ellis and King Rice. Could have an interesting father son-game. Maybe coached by the fathers of Nate Jones and Cam Ayers.

Given Alexander Rice hasn't been announced (has he?), why are we confident he's coming? He’s definitely coming. Instagram account has “Bucknell commit†in the bio and he has routinely posted about current guys on the team. Plus, we haven’t heard about any more offers to kids in the class of 2019 otherwise I would hope the coaching staff would be all over Marcus Domask who recently decommitted from NKU. Focus is clearly on 2020 now |

Given Alexander Rice hasn't been announced (has he?), why are we confident he's coming? Rice reportedly signed an agreement with Bucknell back in November – just not the standard letter of intent. The agreement he signed may be a contract some players have used that contains an out if the coach leaves.

Wow, the timing is interesting. I wonder if the Athletic Department reads our board . . . Maybe they do - but the timing here is not surprising. From what I heard some time ago, he signed some sort of contract with Bucknell back in November with the understanding he would sign an official letter of intent in the late signing period - which started yesterday.

Meehan was in today to watch 6-5 wing Austin Garner at Byron Nelson H.S. north of Fort Worth. No offer yet. Garner's HS is very close to Colleyville (see above item on Hebb). BRW apparently hasn't been able to steer the staff down to San Antonio yet. https://twitter.com/TexasHoopsTV/status/1 118620599...

As we move further away from last season, I think Meeks could have a monster year if his health and conditioning allow it. Agree completely. The two factors are really part of the same issue. His serious foot problems often prevented him from practicing and completely precluded him from doing separate conditioning drills. I hope the BU coaching staff thinks out of the box a bit this year. Their top two players at PF/C are Moore and Meeks. While I expect to see Newman starting at center and Moore at PF, I hope we will see long stretches with Moore at center and Meeks at PF. Moore is such a versatile defender that he can guard any PL center with the possible exception of Ivanauskas. And very few PL fives can keep up with Moore at the other end. A lineup of Moore, Meeks, Toomer, Funk, and Sotos would be very dynamic offensively and not bad at the other end.

As we move further away from last season, I think Meeks could have a monster year if his health and conditioning allow it. Agree completely. The two factors are really part of the same issue. His serious foot problems often prevented him from practicing and completely precluded him from doing separate conditioning drills. How about swimming? It is great cardio exercise with no impact other than pushing off the wall.

Kahliel Spear has beefed up since last year and might be an option at center. Timmerman is also a big body, but we'll have to see if he's college-ready. |

Offer to Caelan 'C.J.' Jones, a 6-5 wing from Los Angeles who will be doing a PG year at Vermont Academy after playing four years for Loyola in L.A. Has offers from Siena, Fairfield, Niagara, Sacred Heart, South Dakota, and Army - all in the past five weeks. At Loyola - which is a good program - he seems to have been a role player who shot a lot of threes. Went 52-146 (46%) from beyond the arc but almost never went to the line. He didn't have any offers when he finished his senior year before they started pouring in, so presumably he has shown a lot of recent improvement.

Updating the timeline of when Bison recruits have committed in the past. Mentally I kind of divide them into four buckets: Very early (winter/spring of junior year); early (mid-June to mid-August); normal (mid-August to mid-November; and late (after the end of November signing period). Chris Hass 1/9 (of junior year) Ryan Frazier 1/20 (of junior year) Dom Hoffman 4/7 (of junior year) - - - - - JC Show 6/21 Steven Brown 6/23 Alex Timmerman 6/26 Ben Oberfeld 7/3 Don. Brown 7/8 C. Klebon 7/11 R. Hill July (date not clear) Jake Van der Heijden 7/29 Z. Thomas 7/30 J. Azzinaro 7/31 Nate Jones 8/1 Nate Sestina 8/2 Deuce Turner 8/3 Kimbal Mackenzie 8/8 - - - - - Justin Castleberry Mid-August (?) Joshea Singleton 8/14 Mike Muscala 8/18 Darryl Shazier 8/31 DJ MacLeay 9/3 Andrew Funk 9/4 Enoch Andoh 9/5 Steven Kaspar 9/7 Nana Foulland 9/7 Todd O'Brien 9/12 Alexander Rice 9/12 Ben Robertson 9/14 Bruce Moore 9/16 John Meeks 9/19 Malachi Rhodes 9/19 Ben Brackney 9/23 John Griffin 9/26 Bryson Johnson 10/1 Joe Willman 10/2 Jimmy Sotos 10/3 GW Boon 10/5 Cory Starkey 10/6 Avi Toomer 10/8 Bryan Cohen 10/11 Zach Evans 10/12 Pat Behan 10/17 Probese Leo 10/20 Darren Mastropaolo 10/23 Jason Vegotsky 10/27 (Per Scout; not sure if this is right) Stephen Tyree 11/1 (?) Cam Ayers 11/17 - - - - - Walter Ellis 4/8 (of senior year) Kahliel Spear 4/9 (of senior year) Paul Newman 4/13 (of senior year) Matt O'Reilly 5/5 (of senior year) - replaced JC Show Fwiw, the quality of the players who committed at the end of July and start of August has been very high - Jake Van der Heijden, Z. Thomas, John Azzinaro, Nate Jones, Nate Sestina, and Kimbal Mackenzie. Hopefully Deuce Turner turns out to be as good as the top names on this list. One other thing I always find fascinating is the group of players who committed "very early". Only three Bison in the scholarship era have committed before June 21st - Chris Haas, Ryan Frazier, and Dom Hoffman. Amazingly they were all in the same recruiting class and all committed by early April of their junior years.

IL, Army, Brown - 2021 The above list has 24 names. Interestingly at the same point last year, there were 43 names with offers. One reason for the difference may be that they had four scholarships to play with last year, and part may be a reaction last year to the problems they had in landing players the previous year when only one commitment came before March. Those are complete guesses, and much of the difference may just be happenstance.

Maybe belongs in a different thread, but for this year’s incoming group, perhaps Timmerman, Van der Heijden or Rhodes could have impact. Basically we need some inside presence which is why I went with that group, even through Timmerman night be the most “inside†of that group. As for players coming back, yeah I’d go with Funk and Sotos stepping up and I’d love to see Ellis be improved as well. |

I think the four incoming players all have different strengths, weaknesses, and playing opportunities: Van der Heijden - I think he will be the most skilled offensive player, one capable of scoring at a good level in PL games. But his defense may be an issue. Has some similarites to Zach in that he has enough offensive ability to play the three but probably can't guard an opposint three. Rhodes - Looks like a better rebounder and defender than Van der Heijden, but doesn't have the offensive ability. His defense and rebounding ability likely will earn him some minutes, especially if they use use him some as an undersized center or if they use Moore some at center. Timmerman - Should be able to rebound at this level, and his size gives him an opportunity to see backup center minutes. But he may struggle to guard D1 post players - which is an issue with most freshmen post defenders since it is so different than HS ball. Players like Sestina and Foulland had problems with post defense as freshmen. Among other things, freshmen need to learn that refs ignore even extremely hard contact when an offensive post player starts his move - but then they will call even minor contact as the shot is being put up. It's all about timing the contact and learning to really bang the player hard but early. Rice - Has a chance to get 10 mpg as the backup PG, but he will have to prove he can handle the point. In HS and AAU ball, he played on teams with future P6 PG's and thus played much of the time at SG. Can he handle a D1 PG role as a freshman?

I think he'll be given every opportunity to win the backup PG role. Hopefully he can do it.

Supply and Demand might throw him in that role. From watching his tapes his handle and overall confidence looks solid but I don't see a lot of playmaking. For a backup PG just being able to not make mistakes is adequate however |

I think Rice will have to fill that role. |

Supply and Demand might throw him in that role. From watching his tapes his handle and overall confidence looks solid but I don't see a lot of playmaking. For a backup PG just being able to not make mistakes is adequate however One thing about Rice is that he has had little opportunity to play the point, having always been on teams with very high-level PG's. During his freshman and soph year at St. Anthony's, the team had PG RJ Cole, who is now at UConn, plus PG Ithiel Horton, who is now at Pitt. Then at Mater Dei as a junior, they had senior Kenny Jones, who looked really good at the point for Loyola last year. Jones had a dozen offers, including one from St. Joes. Finally as a senior at The Patrick School, the starting PG was Al-Amin Dawes, who had tons of P6-conference offers and ended up at Clemson. Also Rice's AAU team had a number of quality PG's, including Jhamir Brickus, a 2020 player who has multiple A-10 offers and many others. Two of their other part-time PG's had multiple D1 offers as well. So Rice ended up largely playing SG at his various teams. The question we will see answered over the next year or two is how good are his PG skills.

Thought Bison might have a shot for next year. W&M, of course, is now coached by Dane Fischer, and they are going to be awful this year. This past season they ranked #219 (Pomeroy) - which caused their coach to be fired - and then three of their top four players transferred out, along with their top sub. All went to teams in stronger conferences. Also the only recruit they had signed opted out of his commitment, forcing Dane to find three new recruits in late Spring, none of whom is going to be a difference-maker this year. So there is lots of room for Stone to earn playing time.

No idea at all, but I'd guess the staff at this point has decided they can do better at the guard position. For that matter, with the commitment from Deuce Turner, it is possible they might not even be looking for any more guards in this class. It is rare by August for Bucknell to have an offer out to a player whose top offer is Lafayette. Typically Army, Navy, and Lafayette are recruiting in a different pool than Bucknell, Boston U, Lehigh, etc.

according to this article: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2019/08/22/bas... we have offered Kaine Roberts a 6-2 shooting guard. he is a Japanese national, born there to an American father and Japanese mother. played high school ball in Japan last year, but will transfer to a hs in California for his senior season. looks like he has a fair amount of international experience and played in aau tourney(s) in the U.S., presumably how we came across him. |

That's very interesting - but also a bit confusing IF he is truly a SG. Deuce Turner seems to be very much a SG. Do they really want two in one class, assuming that is truly his position. If I am reading it correctly, the article seems to call him a "guard" - not a SG but also not a "point guard", which is how they identify another player. It also notes that Roberts "displayed flashy dribbling skills" and they talk about him making his teammates better. So I wonder if he is really a CG who the staff thinks could handle the point. Or another option, of course, is that the offer was made before Turner committed and is now off the table. One other possibility is that he is going to enroll at his California HS as a junior, not a senior as the article says, and become a 2021 recruit. Interesting that the Bison would have seen/heard enough of him to make an offer. I wonder how that came about. I very much like international involvement - although I'd like it to be focused more on Serbia, Croatia, Spain, etc.

I see there is a ton of video of Roberts. It's tough to judge very much from highlight reels, but it's clear he is very fast and very athletic. That site, btw, identifies him as both a "shooting guard and point guard". https://sportsrecruits.com/athlete/kaine_roberts I also see from his team's website that they played in California AAU tournaments this summer, so that presumably explains how the Bison staff saw him.

There are occasions when offers from Ivy and Pl schools are contingent upon the player raising his SAT scores. No idea if that happened here - but it does happen on occasion. It is a bit strange to see a player cut Bucknell, Columbia, Brown, and Loyola while keeping Towson, Howard, Quinny, and JMU.

Jones will make an official visit to Bucknell from September 12 through the 14th. He has picked up more offers, and now holds ones from Boston U, Vermont, Penn, Sacred Heart, Fairfield, Niagara, Siena, , Army, South Dakota, William and Mary, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Colgate.

St. Mary's, and Merrimack (who is switching over to D1 this year). he also picked up a Penn offer yesterday And just picked up offers from Dartmouth, Brown, Boston U, Lehigh, and American. Thomson committed to Colgate yesterday. I can’t remember the last time Colgate brought in somebody as highly regarded as Sam right out of high school |

Celestine with an impressive offer list: UMass, GMU, Bona, La Salle, Hofstra, Tulane, Stony Brook, NJIT, Marist, Manhattan, and Quinnipiac. Hopefully the success of Kimbal Mackezie might put the Bison on his radar. Kimbal is from a town maybe 45 minutes southwest of Toronto, while Celestine grew up an hour northeast of Toronto (Ajax, ON). LI Lutheran also has several other D1 recruits, although probably not ones the Bison would be looking at: - Andre Curbelo - PG with 28 major offers. - Zed Key, a PF with 34 major offers. - Drissa Traore (2021), a 6-7 SF with nine offers, including four A-10.

Prukop to Cal Poly This one doesn't hurt, at least for me, since I had kind of written him off a long time ago. A kid from Southern California who had only offers from western schools (nine of them) except for Bucknell. All public schools except for Bucknell. And all much larger schools than Bucknell. Seems like he really wasn't looking for what Bucknell has to offer or he would have had a different offer list.

I look at all 3 as shooting guards with Deuce being the most pure SG. Does the staff see Jones as a wing? Would Brewster be a replacement for Avi? Yeah, I was thinking about that as well. I'd guess a lot depends on whether they think there is a realistic chance to land a difference-making big man such as Ike. With the current freshman class having a true center (6-9) plus two PF's listed at 6-8, there is no need for a center who is just a big body. Timmerman can fill that role, and I have been told that the staff believes Rhodes can also handle the center spot at the PL-level. He is reportedly a very good defensive player. If nothing else, the skill sets of Jones and Brewster seem to be different. Jones is a bit taller (6-5) but more of a spot-up shooter. Took a lot of threes last year and hit 46% of them. Brewster from what I've seen is more athletic and better attacking the rim. He is listed at 6-4. I suppose one other factor might be if the staff thinks Deuce Turner might be able to handle some minutes at PG down the road. Although he clearly is more of a SG, he definitely has played some PG for Malvern.

A Bison coach was at the Archbishop Wood open gym today. Wood, of course, is Andrew Funk's alma mater. They may have been looking at 6-0 junior PG Jaylen Stinson, who already has offers from Rider, Siena, Iona, Stony Brook, St. Peter's, Bing, and a few others. Also possibly scouting junior 6-5 SF Daeshon Shepherd, who was 2nd team all-state as a soph. He already has offers from GWU, La Salle, Temple, St. Bona, Towson, Hofstra, Siena, and a couple others.

I am curious as to whom will fill the last scholarship. Verbal commits only shows Bucknell with a couple of kids with offers. That's a good question. Of the three offers still outstanding, I don't think there is much of a chance of any ending up in Lewisburg. It's possible there will be a late offer and commitment, but that is becoming more unlikely each day. If nothing happens in the next few weeks, that means the scholarship will be carried over to the spring, a process that hasn't worked out real well in the past. One possibility - and one I'd like to see explored more - is to land a transfer. Langel has brought in almost ten quality players via the transfer route, despite having far less basketball tradition/success than Bucknell plus a much worse gym plus a location in the middle of the tundra. With a concerted effort, the Bison might be able to land a few transfers as well.

I give this suggestion a big Thumbs Up! And if we get a D2 or D3 player, they can play right away, correct? We should be exploring point guards for this possibility, not bigs. Also, re transfers, can the football team hop on that bus too? HELP WANTED sign is out and flashing.... |

Paul Harrison is recruiting in Florida. One player scouted was 6-5 wing AJ Staton-McCray of West Oak Academy. Has offers from DePaul, App State, IL State, Northeastern, UMKC, and LA Tech. https://twitter.com/WestOaksAcad/status/1 204924721...

Joe Meehan has been looking at some players in California. Yesterday he checked out 6-5 wing Jadon Jones of St. Anthony's (Long Beach). He has offers from Northern Arizona and Sacramento State.

New offer to 6-3 SG Josh Adoh. Adoh is a post-grad player at Combine Academy, a sports-oriented prep in Charlotte. He played his HS ball in the San Francisco area. Shot the three well there. Seems to be strong/stocky. Has one other D1 offer: South Carolina Upstate. Paul Harrison had been down there at least twice (early December and early February) to watch him play. Hopefully he has recently improved and the Bison are ahead of the curve. At this point, I don't really want any recruit who doesn't project as an above-average PL player. If the staff can't land a player who fits that mold, I'd much rather wait for a possible transfer. Bucknell in the scholarship era, btw, has brought in only four spring scholarship signees: Matt O'Reilly, Paul Newman, Walter Ellis, and Kahliel Spear.

With Deuce coming in primarily as a 2G I am surprised not trying to find a PG with the last scholarship. I feel there is a large need at the point. |

I mentioned in another post that Deuce has talked about preparing to play some PG at the next level, so possibly this is an indication that he really could see some time at that spot. It's hard to judge how he would do as a PG since Malvern Prep has a very good PG - and Deuce is their second tallest starter - so they have no reason to put him at the point.

Still had only one other scholarship offer - South Carolina Upstate. Had no offers at the time he finished his four years of school in California. I hope he proves me wrong, but I am not excited by this commitment. I would have preferred that they use the final scholarship on a good transfer. Langel has brought in eight transfers who were all above-average PL players. For whatever reason, Adoh is apparently the only player they made an offer to since November.

Again seems like the bison had other areas that needed to be addressed. A true point guard or small forward. I tried to dig up some info on Adoh but not much out there. |

One site says he is 6-4. Am hoping that's accurate and that he can effectively play SF. Here is one article on him during his senior year in California: https://www.prephoops.com/2018/02/prospect-spot lig... Also a highlight video from this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl-_9Eq3zyQ As in all highlight videos, he looks good. Fwiw, many articles indicate he is good from three-point range.

In his true senior year (2018-19), Adoh averaged 13.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 1.7 spg against good competition in California. Hit 43% (63-148) on threes and 49% on twos.

Graham Ike signed with Wyoming. Doesn't appear we have any outstanding offers for the class of 2020 so unless Spear returns or we get a late transfer, we won't be using our full allotment of scholarships this coming year |

Just took a look at the roster for next year and the Freshmen and Miles Latimer have all been added. Late addition to the Freshman class is Alek Delev from Bulgaria. While we have a scholarship available for next year, that would put us over the limit for the following year so he is likely a walk-on. Impressive bio as he is a member of MENSA https://bucknellbison.com/sports/mens-basketbal l/r... https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1 13&am... |

I see he is planning to major in civil engineering. His father appears to be an engineer in Sofia who is CEO of a real estate consulting and investment company. Btw, there are a ton of videos - highlights and complete games - available for Delev if anyone wants to do a bit of scouting. Many are from the spring of 2019, and he was playing a lot off the ball at that point. Team started four guards. Definitely needed some improvement at the defensive end. Menu of Delev Videos
