Any thoughts on where Mike might land in free agency? Is there an NBA where he fits or could he end up back in Europe?

There’s no way he’s heading back to Europe. Only question in my mind is his salary.

Agree. He may have to wait awhile to sign however, as the salary cap issues and exceptions are complicated - and a lot of teams need to make their pitches to the top players first.

At this point a multi year deal in the range of 3 years $20-24 million is what I’m thinking. Near 7 footers who can run and shoot 3’s don’t grow on trees and Mike is in his prime now.

Blazers are looking at Mike with a $5.7 million slot available so perhaps the $5-7 mill range is what he’s looking at, but I don’t know much about the way NBA contracts work. I read he could have a cap bit of $9 million. Other PF Mike potentially could compete against for a spot are Anthony Tolliver, Marcus Morris, Ed Davis, Mike Scott, Frank Kaminsky, Deagan Bender and Jonas Jerebko.

The Bucknell website points out that the Bison once played a couple of pretty good games in the same arena where Mike will be playing.

No. Or that McNaughton's hook shot is going to clang off the rim.

Seems odd to me that Sam Presti would aggressively pursue Mike with only an offer at the veteran minimum of roughly $2 million. Why would Mike agree to this if his market value would warrant a longer term deal at a higher salary?

Maybe Mike could have gotten 2/5.5 or 2/6 if he waited around but it seems like it was a good off-season to find a landing spot early. If he didn't commit to two years at the veteran minimum in early July, he might have still been searching for a one-year vet minimum right now with all the musical chairs going on.

It's certainly been a disappointing start to the season for Mike. Especially with OKC performing much better than expected. Here's hoping he gets the shooting headed in the right direction and gets some more run.

Injury to Nerlens Noel has opened the door for Mike to get significantly more playing time over the past week and half. Had his 2nd double figure scoring game of the season on Monday and put up some solid rebounding numbers. His shooting percentage remains pretty atrocious.

Yes, probably his best of the season. But after playing sparingly earlier in the season, he has become the second man off the bench for the Thunder - who as of now easily qualify for the playoffs.

Mike has played 120 minutes over the past six games, i.e. 20 mpg. In those games, he has 49 points, 27 boards, and 3 blocks. Has made 8-12 on twos, 8-27 on threes (dragged down by an 0-5 game) and 4-6 from the line. Per 40 minutes, he is averaging 16.3 ppg, 9 rebounds, and 1 block.

I think he'll find his stroke. And when you're 6'11", you can do other things.

Let's see how he does over this next stretch with many more minutes. If he excels, his value will increase too.

Last night Mike missed his first three shots, then went 2-2 the rest of the game, all of them 3's. Adams was out, so Noel started. Mike played 17 minutes and was +6.

I listened to part of Doug's podcast interview with him, which was very interesting.

Mike on fire:

https://twitter.com/okcthunder/status/122 090155891...

Tonight: 20 minutes, 14 points, 4-6 on threes, 1-1 on twos, 3 boards, 2 assists in a win over the Hawks.

Previous game: 18 minutes, 14 points, 4-4 on threes, 1-2 on twos, 1 rebound, 1 assist.

In his last 7 games, Mike has hit 17-35 on threes. And 6-10 on twos. Thunder have won their last four games btw.

Scotty, thanks for sharing. The video shows just how good Muscala was at Bucknell, and how good he is in the NBA. Saturday's Muscala related events should be lots of fun to attend. BTW, is Muscala bringing the Minnesota weather with him? it is supposed to drop to 10° Friday night in Lewisburg!

Mike had a nice statline with going 4-4 FGs, 2-2 3s with a couple blocks in just 10 mins to head into the All Star break.

Hoping the down season and current losing streak doesn't diminish the crowd too much for Saturday.

What to do with Spear? This is the question that should occupy the offseason. He’s raw yet improving. He’s not a 5 but not a 4 either. Yet Bucknell is undeniably better with him on the floor.

The halftime video they played was very well produced and similar to the article featured a lot of Coach Paulsen and Bryson. Productive trip for the production crew to GMU and filled in a nice gap with them not being able to attend in person. They also played messages from Dane and Charles Lee during 2nd half TOs. Not sure if any of those have showed up online yet, but assume they will at some point.

Overall thought it was a very nice ceremony and if anyone gets a number on how long it took for the autograph / picture line to clear after the game let us know. My guess would be at least 90 minutes if not more based on the number of folks lined up while the game was still going.

When I left the gym at about 615 Mike was still signing a few autographs and pictures. He wanted to give everyone a chance to get a picture with him. I also had an opportunity to talk to him for a few minutes and his dad as well. Mike to this day is the same as he was when he first walked onto the campus. A very humble guy.

I looked at the 2013 draft class to see how many are in the NBA now. Didn't get an exact count, but it's less than half and fewer than five from the 2nd round. Does anyone remember the #1 pick that year? (Giannis was #15!)

There are four left from the second round - with Mike, Allen Crabbe, and James Ennis all virtually tied for the top spot in career win shares.

Anthony Bennett was taken first overall by the Cavs. Proved to be a big bust and is now likely in a Y League somewhere.

Weak draft overall that year. Resulted in few stars.

CJ was taken #10 and Utah took Rudy Gobert at #27. A lot of forgettable picks.

Mike is averaging about 10 ppg in about 18 mpg. Hitting 65% on twos (small sample) and almost 39% on threes.

Mike had missed a few days with a rib injury. Had a decent game last night in a loss to the LA Lakers. Only hit 1-6 on threes (a rare poor night from beyond the arc) - but hit 2-3 on twos while netting 7 points, 4 boards, and 1 assist in 18 minutes.

OKC won in OT tonight, erasing a 22 point deficit with Mike a major contributor in the OT. He hit two long threes, one breaking a tie and the second, with about 50 seconds left, extending the lead from one point to four points. He played 27 minutes - ending with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 block.

Yes, a great game for Mike. The Thunder won against a CJ McCollum-less Portland team. CJ is out with a stress fracture of his foot....don't know if it it was the same foot as the injury that cut his senior year short at Lehigh. It would have been great to see tWO PL POYs go against each other. Anyway, kudos to Mike. He's getting a lot of minutes this year and is a good fit with this team. Al Horford DNP so Mike made the most of this opportunity to play.

Last night may have been Mike’s best game as a professional. 23 points in 21 minutes and a career high 6 3-pt buckets in the win.

That's interesting because he was 1-9 in the previous game. I also saw in the box score that C.J. McCollum is out with a broken left foot. I think that is the same foot that he broke his senior year at Lehign.

Yes, Mike's 3-point shooting has been a roller coaster. He was 1-9 in the previous game, then 6-8 last night. In the previous game, however, he pulled down 8 rebounds - one short of his career high - to offset the misses.

I haven’t seen Moose play in a couple of years. Does he ever try to score with his back to the basket anymore?

In the OKC offense, Mike spends 90% of his time beyond the arc, either in a pick and roll/pick and pop role - or else on the weak side waiting for a catch and shoot three. But he sometimes gets closer to the basket. For example:

But here are his more common types of shots:

From what I saw, Mike has been used almost exclusively as a 3-pt shooter since he went to Philly. Personally, I wish he was given an opportunity to do more, but I suppose it has earned him quite a few million dollars.

Thanks for the analysis and this makes a lot of sense to me. He’s too small to play the 5 and not athletic enough to start at the 4 in the modern NBA. Yet if you’re 6’10” and can move fluidly and shoot from behind the arc? You’re going to provide value to a roster. I also think he’s a little better than that based on what I saw from him with his brief stint in Philadelphia. Important to note that even night he doesn’t shoot well don’t diminish his value. Because he’s shown he can get hot, it creates mismatches.

I’m really happy with Mike’s career. Anyone who plays in the NBA is in the elite of the elites even more than the NFL.

Mike always loved shooting the three pointer, but at Bucknell he had to play a certain way because of two people-Dave Paulson and Steve Kaspar. He had to play Dave's system and Kaspar got you the ball if he knew you had his full attention. But Muscala could just basically turn and dunk. I always cherished the fact I could walk a half mile to Sojka get shooed in and then watch a Muscala-McCollum battle. Ray Bucknell!

Mike had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal in 17 minutes tonight in a 17 point win over Houston. In his time on the floor, he was +19 as the OKC subs won the game. Their best starter was a +1 and collectively the five starters were negative.

Mike was back on the court last night. Struggled shooting - only his 2nd game this year without a made 3 - but did set a new career high with 7 assists. They ended up losing by 1 in OT versus Lebron and the Lakers which is a good showing for them.

Mike has had a few good games this week:

- Last night he played 26 minutes, netting 21 points on 2-2 on twos, 5-9 on threes, and 2-2 on FT's. Also 3 rebounds.

- The night before he had 11 points in 17 minutes, going 3-4 on twos and 1-2 on threes. Also 5 boards.

- On Sunday he played 19 minutes, producing 8 points including 2-5 on threes.

- And last Friday he didn't shoot it well but had 8 boards in 22 minutes.

Sixers could use a spot of 3-point shooter off of the bench, and size would help.

Mike’s worst shooting year was when he was with Philadephia. Need to shoot better than 34% when that’s really the reason you’re playing. I’m glad that Mike had a decent NBA career, had lots of good experiences, and made some decent $$ as well.

Mike has had two mediocre years from behind the arc and his season in Philly was one of them. This year he is hitting 38%, which is the same as he made last year with the Thunder. Mike's 3-point pct would be a little better had he not gone 0-9 in the two games immediately following his return from concussion protocol.

The Thunder easily won at Cleveland, as Mike had 13 points and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. Fwiw, his plus/minus was a team-leading +20.

Mike had a good game tonight in a Thunder 107-102 come-from-behind win at San Antonio. In 23 minutes he hit 3-6 on twos and 4-7 on threes for 18 points. Also had 7 rebounds.

1. "Veteran forward/center Mike Muscala has been a regular, reliable rotation player for the Thunder so far this season, averaging a career-high 9.7 points per game to go along with 3.8 RPG and a .368 3PT% in 34 games (18.6 MPG). However, he received a DNP-CD in the team’s first game of the second half, with youngsters Aleksej Pokusevski and Moses Brown inserted into the rotation following their time in the G League.

“It took Mike out of the rotation, but Mike’s a pro and he’ll stay ready,” Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said. “Those conversations with Mike are easy, and he makes it easy because of how professional he is.”

It was just one game, but both Pokusevski (14 points, eight rebounds) and Brown (eight points, 12 rebounds) looked good, and there’s no reason to expect the rebuilding Thunder to dial back their young players’ minutes the rest of the way. "

Maybe the Thunder will buy him out and he can catch on with a contender. Long shot, but possible. I read the Lakers and possibly Sixers may have a little interest. Thunder are also sitting Al Horford for the remainder of the season.

When you have 34 draft picks (34!!) over the next 7 seasons the OKC shift to full on tank and rebuild was inevitable, but certainly unfortunate for Mike.

I agree his career is not over. Mike is a big man who can hit the three and is still only 29 years old. Also has a good attitude. There should be a spot for him next year, albeit at a lower salary.

OKC is on a 14-game losing streak. Since they opted to sit Mike and go with the G League guys, they are 3-19. Prior to that, they were 17-22.

A few items of Muscala draft trivia.

1. Since his NBA career began, Mike's VORP (Value over replacement player), per basketball-reference.com, is better than every other player selected in the 2nd round in his draft (2013).

2. Mike's VORP for his career is better than 16 of the 30 1st round picks in 2013. Among others, he is ahead of the top pick from that year, UNLV's Anthony Bennett.

3. Mike's VORP is better than three of the top five picks from both the 2012 and 2014 draft.

And it worked for the 76ers. OKC not only will have a top pick this year (their own pick) but also a ton of first rounders going forward. Currently their collection of first rounders is:

2021 - three
2022 - two
2023 - four
2024 - three
2025 - three
2026 - three

That's 18 first round picks, and they also have a bunch of second rounders. Given the relatively small size of an NBA roster, they may try to move up in a draft or two, by offering two or more of their picks for a higher first rounder. It is possible that they may be a good team in as little as three years if they do a good job evaluating talent.
