He is a 6-2 SG from Malvern Prep. Also had offers from La Salle, Lehigh, Robert Morris, and Loyola. Maybe some others.

Was 1st team 5A all-state in PA this past year. It's a bit puzzling why he only has picked up one reported offer since January. He doesn't appear to have a twitter account, so it is possible there were others that were not reported.

Two more items:

1. Can't find many stats, but he averaged 26.5 ppg as a junior and 20.5 ppg as a soph.

2. He played AAU for Team Final in April but missed all of their games in May and July. Might be injury-related but he played in a HS team event in June. Maybe a switch in AAU teams?

Thanks for that. I now feel better about his offer list. Putting the two lists together, his offers are St. Joes, La Salle, Lehigh, Delaware, RMU, Mt. St. Mary's, Hartford, and Loyola. And Bucknell of course.

Given his lack of a personal twitter feed and the fact that Verbal Commits missed five of his nine known offers, it wouldn't surprise me if there were more offers out there as well.

There is a lot of info on Turner in the bottom part of the article linked by JDBison: https://www.philadelphiasportsdigest.com/news_arti...

Excerpt:

"When watching Deuce Turner, one thing immediately jumps out: he can score early and often. He’s been doing it since he came into Malvern Prep as a freshman and was inserted into the Friars starting lineup. He’s only continued to increase his scoring output and he became the first junior in Inter-Ac history to surpass 1,500 career points in three seasons. He scored a school-record 48 points against Bishop Shanahan as a sophomore then avg. 26.6 ppg this season."

26.6 points per game is a ton of points. I'd love to know if they are fast break points, three pointers, etc. According to Wikipedia, there are 102 high schools in 5A. So, to be 1st team All-State is a pretty big deal.

Looks like a strong, slasher who takes the ball hard to the rim. Nice crossover. Shows some range in this highlight film:

BTW, doesn't look 6'-2". My eyes tell me that he is 6'-0", but he might have grown.

Possibly. The video is in a game against Philly power Neumann-Goretti in January of 2019. If you want to try to compare heights, the player trying to guard him on many of the plays is Christian Ings, who was also listed at 6-2. Ings, btw, had offers from schools such as La Salle, Stony Brook, Siena, etc, and ended up at Rider.

Looking a little deeper, I see he played two games for a different AAU team, PhillyPride, in a Georgia tournament in July. I don't know how good the competition level was, but his stats were impressive:

46 minutes
43 points
8-11 on twos
6-13 on threes
9-10 on FTs
3 rebounds
7 assists

He also played games for them in May and June. Here is a video from May where he discusses changing teams:

Turner made the 5-player Philly All-City team, which includes many suburban players, as a junior. The other four had already committed to La Salle, St. Joes, Maryland, and Miami (FL). He was the only junior on the first team.

I have seen Turner's height listed as anything from 6-0 to 6-2 in various articles over the last year. In the post above, I mentioned him playing against Christian Ings, who was listed at 6-2 on his HS roster and is also listed at 6-2 on this year's Rider roster. Here is a picture of the two side-by-side immediately after the game. Turner doesn't look shorter fwiw.

My first reaction in seeing this post was WOW! I have seen Deuce play several times over the past 3 years and he is lightning fast. He also seems fearless in his play, as I saw him in both home and away games in the Inter-Ac League. I am excited to have Deuce on board as a Bison.

I saw the Inter-Ac championship game late this winter with Malvern at home vs. Haverford School. Deuce started off slow, and then got hot including a couple of step back 3 pointers. He can shoot from the outside and slash to the basket.

Haverford (which finished unbeaten in the league) put St. Joe recruit Christian Ray on Deuce to slow him down, and Ray is a very good defender at 6-5 or 6-6. Deuce took it as a challenge and went at Ray, drawing a couple of fouls.

He will really do well with our up tempo offense and score. Exciting player. I would say 6-1.

Not only did Haverford finish unbeaten in league play, they didn't lose any games at all, ending up at 23-0. As you know, another player for them was Jameer Nelson Jr. Deuce Turner ended up with a team-leading 21 points in that game.

In the other game between the two teams, Haverford won in OT as Ray got 36 points. Turner got 25 in that game for Malvern.

Another interesting game for Malvern Prep was right at the end of December when they beat Philly power Neuman-Goretti, which rostered three players heading to D1 schools (St. Joes, Rider, and maybe Bing). Below is a link to the video of that entire game. Deuce started slow but ended up with 37 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, as Malvern came from almost 20 points back to win 70-69. Turner is actually their second tallest starter and spend large parts of the game guarding a 6-5 senior forward who is heading for St. Joes.

Looks like he has very good scoring potential, size does not bother me! Kimbal, who was a much less gifted athlete, may only have been 5'10" and Burns at Colgate who gave Tennessee 30 is not much taller than that...To be an all-league player he'll have to be committed to defending and be able to make plays for others which I did not see a lot of in his videos but sometimes it can be difficult to really know in short highlight tapes.

Speaking of scouting reports, I happened to see one on Turner from a La Salle fan who follows Philly HS ball closely. This was from a January 2018 game Malvern Prep played vs Germantown Academy:

"Deuce Turner (6-2) from Malvern is another talented guard. Malvern plays four guards and one 6-6 big (Fran Oschell 2021 with 23). Turner is one of the wing guards but has the skill set to handle the point. MP has a fine lead guard in Rahdir Hicks.

Deuce had 24 points in basically three quarters because the outcome was never in doubt. What I found interesting is that Turner must have had 6 layups before he took an outside shot. He slashed to the basket, took a couple of long passes and a back door cut. In the third quarter, I was still waiting for him to show off his jumper. I didn't have to wait long. He stroked a three which hit nothing but net. Nice. Next time down he pulls up straight on from NBA distance and does the same thing. Impressive."

La Salle was one of the schools recruiting him.

On Twitter, self-described "avid Kansas Jayhawk fan and national recruiting dude Phenom Hoops Report" Chick Gillespie says:

"Congrats to Malvern Prep's Deuce Turner on his commitment to Bucknell. This young man is a walking bucket getter who can shoot it from the arc but can get to the rim as well. Not a true PG but can pass the ball to open shooters or back door cutters and should help the Bison day 1."

Turner became Malvern Prep's all-time leading scorer with this pull-up jumper last week:

https://twitter.com/MalvernPrepHoop/statu s/1203992...

He had 67 points in their first three games to raise his career total to 1762. The former record holder, Charlie Floyd, was twice 1st team All-Philly before playing for Wake Forest in the mid-70's. .

https://twitter.com/richflanagan33/status /12040427...

Also of note: Turner scored 37 points in a 97-83 scrimmage win over the Hun School.

For those interested in college basketball history, here is a compilation of each year's All-Philly teams - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams - and the college each senior went to, dating back to 1972:

http://www.tedsilary.com/BBAll-City.htm

Of note is that each team is shown in the order the players were ranked. One example of how much talent Philly produces is that Cam Ayers was only 2nd team as a senior, albeit the top ranked player on that team. And John Griffin as a senior barely made 2nd team. Andrew Funk was also 2nd team but ranked higher than Griffin.

Last year when Deuce Turner made 1st team as a junior, he beat out seniors heading to Penn State, Xavier, St. Joes, Princeton, Rider (2), etc.

"In college I want to get into entrepreneurship and management. As far as my career path, I fully intend on playing in the NBA, that’s the goal, but after that is where I’d to be an owner of a company."

I don't know if I have ever heard a Bucknell recruit say that his goal is to play in the NBA. They might have thought it, but I have never heard it said. Can anybody else remember an in-coming freshman say something like this?

SJP has been coached for the past 19 seasons by the legendary Speedy Morris, who sadly is retiring after this year due to Parkinson's. Morris has won over 1000 games during his combined tenure at SJP and at Roman Catholic (14 seasons). In between, he was head coach at La Salle University, where he still ranks as their winningest coach ever. Also coached the La Salle women's team for a couple of years.

Turner currently has 1904 points - one of only three players in Inter-Ac history to score that many.

For those who didn't follow Deuce's recruitment, his reported offers were from Bucknell, St. Joes, La Salle, Lehigh, Loyola, Delaware, RMU, MSM, and Hartford. Not a bad list, but also remember that he committed in July. Had he waited a few months, the list likely would have gotten bigger. One thing that likely kept down the bigger offers is his height. Although listed at 6-2, he may be a bit shorter than that. For a SG, that is not ideal.

Obviously don’t want to compare skills and potential professional careers, but CJ wasn’t “ideal height” for a SG at a major and he worked out pretty well for Lehigh. Look forward to watching him for four years. Do you think Deuce is the most skilled and top recruit of Davis’ tenure?

That's hard to say. Based solely on offers, the top four would appear to have been Andre Screen, Jimmy Sotos, Bruce Moore, and Deuce. The offers/conferences for those four are:

SCREEN:
- A10: St. Joes, Rhode Island, GMU, La Salle, St. Bona
- CAA: Delaware, Northeastern, Towson, GMU
- MAC: Ohio, Akron
- Ivy: Brown, Columbia
- Patriot: Bucknell, Lehigh, Boston, Loyola, American
- Big South: Radford
- Horizon: Cleveland
- Other: Fairfield, MSM
(Committed late September)

SOTOS:
- Missouri Valley Conference: Northern Iowa, Drake, Loyola (IL), Illinois State,
- CAA: Northeastern, W&M, Elon
- Ivy: Princeton, Penn, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell
- MAC: Western Michigan
- Southern: Furman, Wofford
- Big South: Campbell, Winthrop
- Patriot: Army, Lafayette, Bucknell
- Horizon: Milwaukee
(Committed early October)

MOORE:
- A10: Duquesne
- WCC: San Francisco, San Diego
- CAA: JMU, William & Mary, Towson,
- Big South: Winthrop
- Patriot: Bucknell, Colgate, American, Navy, Boston U, Loyola
- America East: Vermont, UMBC
- Other: Siena
- Ivy: Articles indicated he had Ivy offers but did not list them
(committed mid-September)

Note: Articles indicated Moore had a number of other unidentified offers.

TURNER:
- A10: St. Joes, La Salle
- CAA: Delaware
- Patriot: Bucknell, Lehigh, Loyola
- NEC: RMU, MSM
- America East: Hartford
(committed end of July)

I’ve seen Deuce play several times a year for the past 3 seasons, including the opener this year vs Phelps School.

He is a pure scorer. He can score from any level and can slash to the basket against bigs. He has no fear.

He is a 2 and not a point guard. But he can get his own shot and dish to others for open 3s. Defense is a work in progress. He’s athletic enough to be a good defender. Malvern Prep does not ask him to do much more than score.

Very fast and can dunk as he did for the first basket of this season. Exciting player but needs to round out his skill set and get stronger.

Malvern Prep lost 93-83 today to a very strong Rutgers Prep team in a high-level Philly tournament. Deuce had 34 points - 23 in the second half.

Rutgers Prep features 6-8 Trey Patterson, one of the top juniors in America (20+ P6 conference offers already), fellow junior PG Noah Harris (20+ D1 offers already) and 6-6 Nico Galette, a Sacred Heart commit. Among the many coaches in attendance were Jay Wright and a Bison coach (likely Joe Meehan).

And one of only three on the team who is still in high school. For those who haven't seen it, note that this is not an all-star team just for schools in the various Philly-area leagues but rather an All-Southeastern PA team, which incorporates far more schools. It ranges at least as far west as Coatesville and at least as far north as Quakertown (Pennridge HS).

By ranging so far from Philly, a lot of strong players get added, e.g. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (Chester), Mo Bamba (Westtown), Cam Reddish (Westtown), Ryan Arcidiancono (Neshaminy), etc.

Deuce returned to action today vs Friends Central, and it was a momentous one. He scored 31 points in an easy win to go over the 2000 point mark. He is 3rd in all-time scoring in the Inter-Ac and closing in on #1.

For those who are interested, here is a link to the full video of this game:

https://depreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/malvern-...

Coatesville, which is also Deuce's hometown, features Jhamir Brickus (#2), a 5-11 PG who averaged 28 ppg last year and who has a number of offers from schools such as Richmond, La Salle, Rider, Siena, Towson, etc. Other than this game, they are 7-1 this year, with the other loss a relatively close game to a strong team.

Had Deuce not gone to Malvern Prep, the two would be teammates and Coatesville likely would be one of PA's top teams. Even without Deuce, they went 30-3 last year and won the PA 6A title.

Very interesting video. One thing that I noticed are the various statements about his interest in the point guard position. For example:

“Playing the 1 spot, I know the game’s gonna get faster. I’m going to have to be able to play longer and be able to produce more. Studying the game and making reads, knowing where everybody is supposed to be, and communicating.”

It's been generally assumed that he is coming as a SG, and I am sure that will be his main position as a freshman. But it would be a big plus if he can also handle the point and possibly play a lot of minutes there after Sotos graduates.

It was also interesting that he’s already thinking about the possibility of coming in and talking to teammates who might be 21-22 years old about being lazy or not working hard. Perhaps Deuce also may not appreciate some of the goofing around that sometimes happens in warmups and on the bench. With the NBA as a long-term goal, I get the feeling Deuce will take basketball seriously.

Deuce scored 28 points in a win at West Chester East. With 2,067 points, he's now the second-highest scorer in Inter-Ac League history, having passed former Duke Blue Devil Gerald Henderson.

If he scores just 2 points tonight vs Cheltenham (in a doubleheader at West Chester University), he'll be number one.

Biggest issue with Deuce is his defense. From the videos I have seen, I think there is some work to do in that part of his game.

Defense notwithstanding I think we’ve already gotten ahead of ourselves assuming he and Screen will quickly and/or automatically take us to the mountaintop. Nice to have a higher level of confidence in the quality of recent commits but time sometimes takes time. Not fair to the kid either to automatically assume he’s the next coming. Let’s get them both some help by really being aggressively targeted about our remaining slot.

No, I’m not jumping ahead to the mountaintop with Deuce, I just think he’s is more skilled and talented than many players currently on roster. To me, our offense especially could use his skill set. So I wouldn’t expect going to the mountaintop right now, but maybe the rest stop at .500 Town is reasonable.

Yesterday brought a Bucknell-over-Colgate basketball victory of sorts, as Deuce Turner and Malvern Prep beat Episcopal Academy with future Raider guard Alex Capitano, 75-62.

Deuce is averaging 24.1 ppg.

Playing against a very good 14-3 William Allen team, Deuce exploded for 39 points in an 80-74 win. Malvern trailed going into the final quarter.

https://twitter.com/Bucknell_MBB/status/1 221875773...

Deuce now has scored 2208 career points, passing Wilt Chamberlain for 3rd place on the all-time Philly scoring list. That list includes Philly players plus players in Philly-based leagues. The two still ahead of him are Maurice Watson (2356) and Maureece Rice (2681). Rice, btw, had a couple of good years for GWU but then got suspended and ultimately thrown off the team.

There are a lot of great Philly-area HS players who didn't score nearly as many points as Turner. A few include:

Eddie Griffin
Bradley Wanamaker
John Griffin
Mo Howard
Michael Brooks
Collin Gillespie
Joe Bryant
Tyrone Garland
Bo Kimble
Hank Gathers
Brian Shorter
Rasheed Wallace
Aaron McKie
Larry Cannon
Tony Costner
Wilt Chamberlain
Walt Hazzard
Marcus Morris
Markieff Morris
Lionel Simmons
Dj Newbill
Gene Banks
Tom Gola
Gerald Henderson
Wayne Ellington
Alvin Williams
Cam Ayers
Ryan Ayers
ETC

Nice work 137!
Pretty good chance he will move up to 2nd if he stays healthy. I wonder if there is an asterisk before the names that did not have the 3 point shot opportunity. No matter what a very good career for Turner. I hope that trend continues with the bison.

Don't think there are any asterisks, but the two still ahead of him definitely had the 3-point shot. Wilt, of course, did not - although I doubt he would have been shooting many threes anyway. Looking at the entire list, there are perhaps five players who might still be ahead of Deuce if the three had been in effect when they played. If he stays healthy, he will likely end up ahead of any realistic projection for all of the pre-1987 players.

Impressive...although we all can agree that number of points scored involves many factors. Doesn’t mean players at top of the list are better than players in the middle or lower in the list. Still, glad to welcome Deuce to Bucknell next year.

Certainly, the 3-point shot has impacted the scoring list over the last 20 years. Games played is probably even a bigger variable. Wilt, Tom Gola, Michael Brooks and several other greats on your list from the pre-80's only played varsity basketball for 3 seasons. This isn't meant to diminish Deuce's place in Philly history; his numbers would likely put him ahead of many of these players but certainly not Wilt. He'll be one of the most accomplished scorers to enter the Bison program.

Malvern Prep came from 15 points back today to beat Springside Chestnut Hill and clinch the Inter-Ac title. Turner ended up with 24 points.

Early in the week, he faced a lot of double-teaming but ended up with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in a 27 point win.

Catching up.

1. Deuce was recently named MVP of the Inter-Ac.

2. In an early round game of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament, Malvern Prep came from behind to take out Episcopal Academy. Deuce had 20 points. Malvern was without All Inter-Ac guard Rahdir Hicks.

3. In the quarters of the same state tournament, Malvern (the 3 seed) beat Kiski School (the six seed) 78-66. Deuce led with 34 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Hicks, their second best player, did not play again. MP now has a 22-4 record.

B137, many of us are not Twitter users like you. Where is Hicks (point guard for Malvern) going to college? Or is he still a junior?

I have seen him play multiple times-- he is fast and has improved his overall game. I think he could play in the Patriot League.

Just wondering....appreciate your research on this. His Dad, Ricky Hicks, is one of the all-time leading scorers for West Chester U (Division II).

Does anyone else think we could use a small, shifty PG who can set up our 3 point bombers?? IF not Hicks, then who are the targets for this need.

Hicks is a junior. Agree that he might be able to play PG at the PL level. No idea if his grades/SAT's fit under the AI.

As for Bucknell's PG plans, it is hard to tell. I would not be excited to see Xander Rice as the starting PG. Deuce Turner has said he is preparing to play the point, at least on occasion, so that may be a possibility - although I'd have to see a lot more of him playing there to form an opinion. Right now, there is only one known outstanding scholarship offer for the available scholarship for the Class of 2020. And that one is to a PF and may well be off the table. I imagine we will eventually see more offers for that open spot, although I would be fine with holding it back to use on a transfer (assuming the BU administration cooperates). That strategy has been very successful for Matt Langel at Colgate.

Also there is one known PG offer for the Class of 2021, Denham Wojcik who plays for an Indiana prep school. I would be surprised if he ends up at Bucknell however. Assuming the final scholarship this year is not used for a PG, then I think that would automatically become the #1 need for the 2021 recruits. And I agree that it would be good to get a small, quick PG.

They list the other semi-final as starting at 6 PM and then Malvern Prep's game starting at 8 PM. That should be about right if there is no OT in the first game.

MP faces Phelps tonight. Should they win, they likely would meet #1 seed Westtown. Westtown has only lost one game to a PA team this year - and that was to Philly power Neumann-Goretti, which may be PA's top team.

Turner scored 22 points but Malvern dropped a 72-59 decision to Westtown School in the. PA independent school championship game. Westtown was the clear favorite with a taller front court than most college teams and 6-5 junior guard Jason Warley who is a rising star. The Moose also have TJ Berger who is headed to Penn as a senior guard.

Turner had 8 field goals with one 3 pointer and was 5 for 5 from the line.

Also does anyone have more details on how Andre Screen is doing this year? Been a little quiet on his stat lines.

Like many private schools, there is very little press coverage of Screen’s team. And they don’t post their stats on maxpreps or on their own schools website, So therde is very little information out there. Just judging from the tweets by the school site and a few fame videos, however, I don’t think he is having a big scoring season. In the games Where there has been any info, I would guess he’s averaging no more than 12 to 14 points per game. No idea about the rebounds, but he is surrounded by a lot of good players and doesn’t seem to have a real high motor where he wants to get every ball.
