I know we are all still following the basketball season for the Bison, somewhat disappointing as it has been (let's face it - we have been spoiled over the past decade or so). While I still think the guys have a chance to make the playoffs interesting, after talking to a friend of mine from 'Nova, I thought I would bring up the subject of the 2020 Bison football schedule. I was wondering if anyone knows the complete schedule yet? As far as I know, we only have one opening to fill on the schedule, and it looks like another tough year ahead. Other than the 6 PL games, the Bison are slated to play both Army and Princeton on the road and Cornell and Villanova at home (that Villanova game seems strange, as we hosted them last year at Lewisburg - 2 straight games at home against them seems odd). That leaves one out-of-conference game left - does anyone have a clue as to who it is (Sacred Heart)? Just curious if anyone knows, as a break from the b-ball season discussions would be refreshing. |

It might be Sacred Heart, as the Bison have played them three straight years, two at home and one at Fairfield. While it is possible that it was a two-for-one series, it is certainly possible that the Bison owe them one more game. Last year there were rumors that BU had agreed to a series with VMI, but I'm not sure of the accuracy of that report and not sure, even if correct, if the series would begin this year. Whoever it is, I hope it's a winnable game. Last year's schedule - with four certain OOC losses out of five, was a bit too challenging.

Agreed. I also heard about the VMI series, so it might still happen. My biggest surprise is still 2 straight home games with the 'Nova Wildcats. |

Did a little more checking. There is a VMI series on the horizon - but not his year. BU will play VMI four straight years from 2022-25. Right now this is the "known" schedule for 2020: 9/4 @ Army 9/12 Villanova 9/19 Bye or 5th OOC game 9/26 @ Princeton 10/3 Cornell 10/10 Lafayette 10/17 Fordham 10/24 @ Georgetown 10/31 Colgate 11/7 @ Lehigh 11/14 Bye or 5th OOC game 11/21 @ Holy Cross Don't like the bye to be after Game 10, but that seems to be the most likely scenario. My preference for OOC games is to have one buy game (Army etc), one other tough game (Villanova, top tier Ivy, etc), two "even" games (St. Francis, Sacred Heart, Bryant, VMI, Duquesne, etc.), and one where BU in a normal year is a favorite (Marist, Valpo, Howard, LIU, etc)

I do like the Ivys on the schedule. I do agree that an 11th game being against a Bryant, SHU, Duquesne, etc. would be good. I guess I don't mind the possibility of a late bye week in November. I do like the 3 straight home contests in October - great football weather. Regardless of who #11 is, a challenging schedule. |

Schedule is now finalized with the addition of Penn. 9/4 @ Army 9/12 Villanova 9/19 @ Penn 9/26 @ Princeton 10/3 Cornell 10/10 Lafayette 10/17 Fordham 10/24 @ Georgetown 10/31 Colgate 11/7 @ Lehigh 11/14 Bye or 5th OOC game 11/21 @ Holy Cross Very hard first four games, once again.

Wow, is six years pretty rare in football scheduling? Yes. Bucknell has played two opponents - Cornell and Marist - for much longer periods (14 and 13 consecutive years respectively) fairly recently, but I'm not sure they were for contracts of six years or more.

PL just issued some rules on fall sports that are a bit unclear. One thing that is clear is that football will only start practice 20 days before the game at Army - as opposed to the normal 29 days. Also almost every practice will take place after school starts - meaning shorter practices. Also team apparently will have to bus to Army on the morning of the opening game. Coupled with the cancellation of all spring practices and the loss of summer conditioning/lifting programs, Army might well be a 100-point favorite. Hopefully that game gets cancelled. The PL rules: 1 Patriot League competition will begin at the end of September, with the expectation that League play will be completed prior to Thanksgiving; 2 Non-League competition will not begin prior to Friday, Sept. 4; 3 Patriot League member institutions will confirm that non-League competitors are following comparable health and safety protocols in advance of any contest; and, 4 No Patriot League teams will fly to competitions and, with rare exceptions, regular-season competition will exclude overnight travel.

Lafayette just cancelled their Sept 12 football game at Navy. Per the article below: "Lafayette informed Navy it will not bring its football team back to campus with enough time to meet medical advisory guidelines established by the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)." ... "In order to meet that mandatory six-week acclimation in time to play Navy on Sept. 12, Lafayette would need to bring its football players back to campus in late July and begin practice on Aug. 3." An ill omen for Bucknell at Army on Sept 4? https://www.capitalgazette.com/sports/navy/ac-cs-n... |

I don't think there is any chance at all of playing Army on the 4th. What could happen, however, would be for Bucknell to play there on October 10th. Army is scheduled to play Princeton then - but that game will very likely be cancelled. Right now the Bison are scheduled to play Lafayette on that date, but the PL schedule is being adjusted and the LC date could be changed. BU and LC will both probably have open dates on September 26th as things stand now.

Not sure if this deserves a separate subject heading, but Pennlive is reporting that Joe Susan has sued the university, asserting that he was forced out because of his age. I like Joe, but if this report is true, it is an absurd lawsuit. Joe and his staff did a reasonably good job of recruiting, except at QB, but the offense he ran was worse than that of my local HS. Also he had solid defenders on the roster, but extremely predictable schemes. As a defense to what sounds like an absurd lawsuit, consider what Joe accomplished: - 17-34 record in the PL - 38-61 overall record, despite having had a reasonable OOC strength of schedule for most of the years, with Marist and Cornell perennial opponents. - A final season record of 1-10 It's not surprising he was forced out, albeit with a soft landing spot of what seemed to be a no-show job. What is surprising is that he was kept in the position for nine years despite poor results. Although Bucknell did spend a bit less than many other PL schools, he had a large number of scholarships - with much more of a level playing field than Tim Landis or Tom Gadd had. Had he won 45% of his PL games, that might have been acceptable. But winning 33% clearly was not. If he gets even one penny in damages, that will be excessive and a travesty. We will be unbeaten this fall. I guarantee it! I won't take that bet. The sad thing is that this year's team looked to be one of the best ones of the past 20 years. Returned 20 starters, including the QB, from a team that was 3-3 in the PL. Plus a better head coach than Susan.

PL released the schedule for the spring mini-season: 3/13 Fordham (home) 3/20 Lafayette (home) 3/27 @ Lehigh 4/3 @ Holy Cross 4/10 Makeup Date 4/17 PL Championship League is divided into two Divisions: South (Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh) and North (Colgate, Fordham, Holy Cross). Bison don't play Colgate, a middle-of-the-pack team, but have to take the 6 hour one-way bus ride to Worcester. Meanwhile Lafayette, the closest of the South teams to Worcester, avoids that bus ride. A few of the Bison seniors are going to be playing for someone else this fall, using their 5th year of eligibility. Don't know if their future teams will allow them to play for the Bison.

Bucknell was late putting up an article about this. It was postponed more than a week ago. There is an off-week on the schedule the week before the PL championship game. Plus teams may play make up games on championship week if they don't make that game, so there is a good chance they will make up that game. With Bucknell having lost over two weeks of practice due to the covid shutdown, it is likely a very good decision.

Where's the league championship game if it ends up with two 3-0 teams? I don’t think there’s any rule in place. They might toss a coin. Or maybe hold it at West Point, which is about halfway in between and would be able to accommodate a lot of spectators under New York State rules.

If they opted to have it at neutral site Michie Field, state law would allow a capacity of about 8000 people all of whom could easily be socially distanced. And security at that site would clearly not be an issue. I doubt that is going to happen, but I think it would make a lot of sense, if the two teams are both undefeated.

If the Bison beat Fordham next week at home, and if HC wins at Colgate, then home field for the championship game apparently will come down to scoring differential since both teams would be 3-0. Margin of victory is supposedly capped at 20 points, so HC right now has a one-point advantage. If Colgate were to beat HC, then there are a lot of possibilities, depending on Colgate's result later this afternoon vs Fordham.

This is like Spring football on steroids. I'm happy for the seniors, getting to suit up and knock heads with someone from off-campus. They shut out Lehigh, at Goodman. Woo-hoo. The Holy Cross game at Colgate has been nixed due to positive tests in the Raiders' program, and thus the league has declared the 2-0 Crusaders the NORTH DIVISION CHAMPS. Meanwhile, Bucknell isn't allowing visiting Fordham fans this weekend, which is a little embarrassing. The site of the league championship is still TBD. |

Meanwhile, Bucknell isn't allowing visiting Fordham fans this weekend, which is a little embarrassing. I am not embarrassed at all. Remember that all of Bucknell‘s teams have been one Covid test away from possibly being shut down. Further, back in mid-February there was a real danger that the entire school would be shut down and have to go remote because of Covid. Thus when they approved allowing a limited number of spectators at games, the objective was to keep everything very controlled. Lehigh and Lafayette have rules very similar to Bucknell, where only a few spectators are allowed and none from the visiting team. Fordham and Colgate don’t allow any spectators at all. Georgetown opted to not even have football. Only holy cross allows a few family members from the visiting team to attend. Bucknell’s attendance rules for football allow only a few family members per player - those who are following COVID protocols - plus some students/staff who are being frequently tested for COVID by Bucknell. The players’ family members are not allowed to get closer than 15 feet to any player or coach at any time before, during, or after the game, and families must be socially distanced at all times. Masks are mandatory at all times. Also no tailgating is allowed and no food is allowed inside the stadium. Family members are also not allowed to enter any buildings on campus.

Fordham 31, Bucknell 17 According to Doug Birdsong on the broadcast, and the Holy Cross schedule, Bucknell (2-1) will host the championship game vs Holy Cross (2-0) at 2pm Saturday on CBS Sports Network. The Bucknell schedule still has the location "TBD" and the Fordham-game recap article didn't identify the location either. Seems like their was uncertainty even after our game. Holy Cross is in heavy shutdown mode, so one could imagine the Holy Cross administration ruled out hosting the event. In the absence of any explanation by the league, Holy Cross or Bucknell, we're left to our imagination. That's consistent with a Patriot League pattern all school year. |

I’m sure you all got the email from Bravman too, but if you didn’t, $10 million of a new $40 million bequest will go to immediate improvements in and around Christy Matthewson stadium. Looking forward to hearing some specifics on that. Three things that were in the planning state were: 1. Replacing the old scoreboard with a large videoboard. 2. A new building at the open end dedicated to the football and lacrosse teams. 3 A new field turf practice field adjacent to the stadium. The article on BucknellBison.com elaborates "Athletics enhancements funded by the pledge are anticipated to open in 2023, and include the new Michael C. Pascucci Team Center and a turf practice field offering additional training and practice space for eight men's and women's teams. The improvements will be 100% donor funded, including an endowment to offset operations. They will also have a ripple effect that will benefit all of Bucknell's 27 Division I athletics teams by freeing up locker room, training and rehabilitation space in the Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center and elsewhere on campus. The practice field will also be available for recreational use, spreading the impact on student life even further. . . . The complex's name will be displayed on a new video board at Christy Mathewson–Memorial Stadium, construction of which is also supported by more than $1 million in giving by additional donors. The new board will be operational this fall."

This is awesome news and should make for any better experience for both the athletes and fans. Hopefully people will be able to see the new board from Rt. 15 too to help remind local fans they have a D1 FCS team they can watch on Saturdays. |

I thought that saying the field would be used for eight teams might be an exaageration. Now I see they have changed the press release to say: "offering additional training and practice space for several men's and women's teams." Seems like the likely users will be football and lacrosse (a lot), plus men's and soccer (in bad weather and prior to playing a team who has a field turf soccer field). JKRun, any possible use of the turf field for T&F? https://bucknellbison.com/news/2021/8/9/bison-c lub...

But my understanding is there will be meeting space in the new building which would be very useful, particularly before during and after meets. The video board could also be very useful for displaying results, etc. The bad news is that the javelin runway has to move to the West Fields. Javelin throwers already labor in obscurity and moving them away from the stadium during meets makes matters worse. Given the great success of our throwers over the years, it's a shame there isn't a better solution. |
