Miles Latimer, a 6-3 soph CG from Northern Virginia, has transferred to Bucknell from Stony Brook. Latimer started 54 of 63 games at SG for Stony Brook the past two years for a team that went 22-10 collectively in America East - finishing 2nd both years behind Vermont. He made the AE all-rookie team in 2018-19. He played his HS ball at Paul VI, a very strong program in the DC suburbs. Prior to committing to SB, he had offers from Bucknell, Towson, Boston U, Quinnipiac, UMBC, Lafayette, Brown, and maybe others. Looking more at Latimer, his two years stats at Stony Brook look like this: 29 mpg (65 games) 9.9 ppg 3.3 rpg 1.5 apg 1.0 spg 38.8% 2-pct pct (68-180) 36.6% 3-pt pct (109-298) 77% FT pct (106-138) Stats and minutes declined a bit as a soph. May well be attributable to them having a new head coach and a new system. The head coach who recruited him (Jeff Boals) moved on to Ohio U after last year. Was replaced by Geno Ford, who was fired by Bradley after the 2015 season and had been an assistant at Stony Brook since then.

I like the addition, although the roster will be a bit unbalanced if he has to sit a year - and also will be heavy at the SG/wing spots. Next year's roster will look like this in terms of classes: SR - Sotos, Meeks, Newman JR - Funk, Ellis SO - Rice, Rhodes, van der Heijden, Timmerman, Latimer (RS JR) FR - Turner, Screen, Andoh In terms of position: C - Newman, Screen, Timmerman PF - Meeks, Rhodes, van der Heijden SF/wing * - Funk, Ellis SG * - Turner, Adoh, Latimer PG - Sotos, Rice * - pretty much interchangeable

More importantly, all of his offers except Stony Brook were in the winter/spring of his junior year. SBU actually offered him in the summer after his sophomore year, and he committed to them shortly after his junior year ended - prior to any of the July AAU events. Otherwise he likely would have had more offers. Possibly a lot more.

Welcome to Bucknell, Miles!!! In today's current economic environment, I am surprised that Bucknell wants to carry a player for a year who cannot play. If he can play right away, does that make it a more balanced roster? Also, as a PG, why did he average only 1.5 apg?

I think he would have 2 years of eligibility let. Maybe he get a minor his senior season? I like this transfer as he has proven numbers. |

If he can play right away, that would balance the roster more. But I doubt that will be the case.

Yes, he definitely has two more years of eligibility and I assume it's been determined that Bucknell will let him stay three years to use the two. It's doubtful that all of his credits from Stony Brook will be accepted by Bucknell, so at minimum he likely would have to stay at least one extra semester (or a couple of summers). If he has to stay through first semester anyway, presumably Bucknell would allow him to finish the year.

Seems like a decent addition. But I’m confused as to why he could have immediate eligibility? Graduate transfers can play immediately, right? I thought “regular†transfers had to sit out a year? |

As I said, I doubt he will get immediate eligibility. However hundreds of football/basketball/hocke y/baseball transfers have received waivers allowing them to play immediately, including Colgate's Ivanauskas. Generally the NCAA can grant a waiver where there is “documented extenuating, extraordinary and mitigating circumstances outside of the student-athlete’s control that directly impacts the health, safety or well-being of the student-athlete.†Some reasons that have been used in the past have been: - Already missed a year or two with injuries (e.g. Ivanauskas) - Athlete was a victim of “physical assault or abuse, sexually inappropriate behavior, racial abuse, religious discrimination, questioning of sexuality by a staff member or student at the previous institution, etc†- Cases where an athlete was run off by a coach or essentially had his/her scholarship pulled for non-disciplinary reasons. NCAA last year toughened the documentation required for this category. - Athlete transfers within 100-mile radius of their to home due to injury or illness to an immediate family member. NCAA toughened up this category last year.

The more I watched Miles swish outside jumpers, the more I see Deuce Turner handling the ball. Deuce can dribble drive and shoot or dish. With Ellis, Funk and Latimer on the wings we could see even more 3s in the future. Guys need to work on dribble skills and pump fakes. For reference, see Nova tapes! |

We will likely wait a year to see Miles but then hopefully get two years out of him - the same as would have been the case with Kahliel. How much Kahliel is missed partly depends on the development of Malachi Rhodes and maybe Jake van der Heijden. I think Kahliel's limited skill set meant that he was unlikely to ever get more than the 14 mpg he got this year - and very possibly less. He is undersized to play center - and the arrival of Andre Screen presumably will limit how many minutes he would have played at that position. And at PF, he struggles to stay in front of anyone with any quickness, plus he is a poor shooter and can't dribble with his left hand. Also being a 35% career FT shooter limits his value. When watching practices, I didn't see much of a difference between Kahliel and Malachi. Hopefully with a year under his belt, Malachi will emerge as a solid backup PF and emergency center. You may recall that Malachi actually started the final two games of the first semester, but then Newman returned and ND pared the rotation down to nine players - leaving Malachi as the 10th man in a 9-man rotation.

I like Malachi. He seems like a good kid and a hard worker. He absolutely has limitations and likely will never be a consistently high points producer, but he can be decent defensively and rebounding the ball. |

Bison press release on the additions of Latimer and Adoh: Bucknell basketball welcomes Josh Adoh and Miles Latimer Interestingly the release has bumped up Latimer's height to 6-4 even though Stony Brook's 2019-20 roster has him at 6-3, as does the previous year's roster.

Jeff Goodman and others are reporting that the NCAA by December 16th may vote to give all transfers immediate eligibility. If so, this would mean Miles could play the whole season for the Bison and not lose any eligibility IF the PL doesn't override the NCAA rule that winter sports athletes who play this year won't lose any eligibility. It has never been clarified if he was planning to play two season for the Bison (in 2021-22 and 2922-23) after sitting out this year. That would be perfectly legal under NCAA rules, of course, but would require his buy-in plus Bucknell allowing it for academic reasons. If there were no plans for him to play two years for the Bison anyway, then playing this year would be a no-brainer.

The NCAA has approved the rule change to allow this year's transfers to play immediately. Assuming the PL ratifies the change, that would allow Miles to play immediately. There might be other ramifications, however, depending on the policy Bucknell adopts.
