Two possible northeastern conference changes: 1. A report has NJIT leaving the Atlantic Sun to join America East - a move that makes a lot of sense. A decade ago, all of the northeastern leagues rejected NJIT, which at the time was moving up from D2 but had horrendous facilities. Since then they have built a new 3500 seat basketball arena, added lacrosse as a sport, and built a new outdoor stadium for lax and soccer. Most of America East's membership consists of fairly large public universities, so NJIT is a fit from that standpoint. And it also works geographically. 2. Various reports have Robert Morris looking to move to the Horizon League or possibly the MAAC. RMU has a really nice new arena, easily the best in the NEC, is not at all close to other NEC schools except for St. Francis, and outspends the rest of the league in basketball. Both the Horizon League and the MAAC would be upgrades in terms of quality, although travel cost would go up somewhat. The big issue is what to do with football. The NEC refused to allow Monmouth to continue in the league for football when it moved its other sports to the MAAC, so it is unlikely they would let RMU stay for football only. Very unlikely the Patriot League would accept them due to academic issues, so they might be forced to follow Monmouth into the Big South. The other option would be to join the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

I didn't know much at all about the Pioneer League, including that it's nonscholarship. And wow, far-flung, too: --Butler (IN) --Davidson (NC) --Dayton (OH) --Drake (IA) --Marist (NY) --Morehead State (KY) --Univ of San Diego --Stetson (FL) --Valpo (IN) There's another theoretical course of action re football: What odds would you lay on Robert Morris ending it altogether? |

Jacksonville University DROPPED football following the 2020 season. They had many good seasons but the cost of fielding a team was overwhelming its athletic budget. |

Jacksonville back in 2015 had to forfeit five years of wins for blatant cheating. Seems they awarded "scholarship" money to football players in a non-scholarship league. Also went on league probation. Additionally they had to cut coaches, cut back on the number of rostered players, and get rid of the bogus financial aid. The past two seasons they went 2-14 in league play, as the sanctions caught up to them.

Bryson Johnson was officially announced as an assistant coach by GMU on Monday. This is a bit strange since he has been called an assistant coach on the GMU site since mid-February (see last year's "Around the PL" thread). My assumption is that once he got the legal clearance in February, they gave him the title, but there was some budgetary rule that precluded him from officially having that role until the new fiscal year, which began July 1st. In any event, he apparently has been on the road recruiting for them all year. https://www.dailyitem.com/sports/bucknell-grad- bry...

I’d think recruiting is more difficult in this climate for a myriad of reasons. Going into so many households could be an issue. It hasn't been an issue for the past few months since the NCAA has declared a special "quiet period". Coaches cannot visit recruits at their homes, schools, or at any competitions. Recruits can visit coaches on campus if they choose. Phone calls, texts, etc are still allowed. For a school like Bucknell, which is not in an urban area and whose selling points are its great facilities and beautiful campus, the pandemic and the associated rules make things difficult.

The cancellation of all Bucknell camps hasn't helped either - especially for those sports who land a lot of recruits via the camps.

This past weekend, Mrs. Bison89 and I dropped off our younger son at University of Alabama for his Freshman year. I was happy to hear that they required each student to be tested for COVID-19 and supply the test results to the school via a portal. There are free testing sites on campus for those who lack the funds to pay for one. Also, RA's, professors, and campus security are actively enforcing mask wearing requirements even when walking outside. Students are living on campus. Most of his classes are online or in-person (your choice). He went to his first Bio class yesterday, and out of about 75 students only 2 attended in-person. He was 1 of the 2. He was really looking forward to going to football games, but he told me that stadium capacity is limited to only 20%. So, it looks like major donors and family members will be the only people in the stands. It is definitely a different world!

That is very interesting. I very seriously doubt that it will happen. If I had to pull out my crystal ball and guess, I think that it might be a 32 team tournament or smaller. BTW, on a completely different topic, I was talking with a family friend who plays football at CAA school. They are being told that there might be an 8 game spring season with Seniors being given an extra year of NCAA eligibility to come back next year.

If Walker stays healthy, then Sotos would use his final year of eligibility in 2021-22.

Check out the Colonial Athletic Association's approach to their league schedule: "In lieu of a traditional, home-and-home round robin schedule, teams will play against the same opponent at the same site on consecutive days, primarily Saturdays and Sundays. The only exception will come when teams face their designated travel partner. On those weekends, each team will play once at home and once on the road, with flexibility given to create a day off in between contests. The schedules mirror one another, with the men’s and women’s teams each facing the same opponent at opposite venues." https://caasports.com/news/2020/10/13/caa-a nnounce... |

Even if the plan is for him to sit, if they get the waiver then he is available to take over if a starting guard gets a serious injury. 2. With the NCAA ruling giving athletes an extra year of eligibility, even if he plays this year he can still also play next year. If he doesn't play this year, he may be able to play two years in 2021-22 and 2022-23 (not sure) - but he may not want to stay two more years after this year.

Army ended up losing a close game to Florida, but they are off to a surprising 3-1 start that includes a win over Buffalo. They are starting freshmen at PG and at center. The center is a true freshman, i.e. one who did not do a redshirt year at MAPS. Army may be a lot better than most expected, given that they had lost two All-PL players: 1st teamer PG Tommy Funk and 2nd teamer center Matt Wilson.

Binghamton announced they aren't renewing Tommy Dempsey's contract. Not a big surprise given their poor record and lack of improvement in his tenure. They've promoted an assistant as interim HC pending a full search in Spring 2022. Initial article I read indicated other coaches on staff were expected to be retained for now too which still includes former Bucknell assistant Bryan Goodman. Would love to see Binghamton improve to the point that restarting a series with Bucknell makes sense again. One of the easier OOC road trips available. |

What is surprising is that Dempsey lasted nine years. His overall record during that time was 72-194, with their best season being 12-20. And his best league record was 5-11. He apparently survived because his predecessors were involved in numerous NCAA violations and/or had a number of criminals on the roster. Dempsey is still only 47, as he started his D1 head-coaching career at the age of 30 (Rider). This is the situation Dempsey inherited at Bing: https://www.midmajormadness.com/features/2012/10/1... I agree it would nice to have a series with Binghamton, which is not a long bus ride. They also traditionally have had a very good fan base, although a decade or more of horrible teams has eroded it.

Don’t know Dempsey, but his father was a good friend of mine. I wish him well. |

It's Spiker's first NCAA trip in 12 years as a head coach. Army, of course, is still waiting for its first appearance.

I met Steve Watson once when he was the AD at St. Bonaventure. When he figured out I was a Bucknell alum, talk naturally turned to John, who was still living and teaching at Bona. They grew up in a small village 20 miles north of Olean. When I brought up John's name, Steve's response was, "Yeah, second best thing to ever come out of Franklinville." Brothers. |

George Mason hires Kim English, an asst. at Tennessee who will be making his head coaching debut. An interesting pick. He is either going to continue his fast track to success, or struggle greatly. I believe he's jumping straight into the deep end but it will be fun to track his progress. |

I believe he has one more year on his contract. Not the end of the world if he takes a year off. If he comes back to "one of those academic schools" he'll take a cut, so unless he has the opportunity to move up, let GM pay him. |

Mason is essentially throwing Duane Simpkins Paulson's assistant coach, under the bus. Paulson really did a fantastic job in all facets of Mason basketball, except get them to the dance. So technically, yes, get a new coach but beware the ramifications. Brad Edwards is directly quoted in the Washington Post as saying "I am grateful for Dave's commitment, tireless work, and leadership in directing our program over the past six years". He also states on the Mason website the new coach English is a "tremendous communicator, tireless worker, and natural leader." So its really not apples and oranges, its replacing a high quality coach on a technicality of not getting to the dance, and giving a young assistant from a successful program a chance. I get it. But Simpkins could have been the guy, Dave promoted him and he did well at mason, but what now? And Simpkins was as good a DMV recruiter you can get. So what happened? This new coach will soon realize there are no participation trophies in the A-10, this new coach is way over his head, and what of his career then? There is no happily ever after when a new guy follows a Paulson, the games will sort that out. |

If he comes back to "one of those academic schools" he'll take a cut, so unless he has the opportunity to move up, let GM pay him. GMU apparently already paid him. He reportedly received a $370,000 buyout, which is approximately half of his annual salary. So he is free to do anything he wants without it having any effect on what he gets from GMU.

Various reports say that former Bison assistant Mark Prosser is taking the head-coaching job at Winthrop. I would pay a lot of money if Prosser were taking the head coach job at Bucknell instead.

Sweet move for Prosser, who was an assistant at Winthrop before taking the head coach job at Western Carolina. In other news, major opening as Roy Williams retires at UNC. I wonder if Colgate's Matt Langel will be moving on. Current openings: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketba ll/story... |

Langel would be a great hire for a genuine mid-major program. Imagine what he could do with a home court advantage and not 370 cadavers at each game. |

He had some interest in the Fordham job, which ended up going to Lehigh alum Kyle Neptune. It looks like the only job left that might interest him is Hofstra. It's a better job, but not a big step up. In any event, I haven't seen his name linked to it. Maybe Grasso of Bryant. St. Joes blundered when they hired Billy Lange instead of Langel. Since he is a Philly guy, he may wait until LaSalle or Temple opens up in a couple of years. I'm sure he'd love Penn, but I doubt Donahue is going anywhere.

Dino Gaudio, who was a head coach at Army, Loyola (MD), and Wake, was indicted today for attempted extortion. Allegedly demanded payments from Louisville - where he was an assistant the past few years - or else he would report NCAA violations. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketba ll/story...

Temple just added Cam Ayers to their staff as a graduate manager. Also added Colgate's Sean O'Brien plus a former Temple player in the same role. Temple has a basketball staff of at least 13 this year. https://twitter.com/vrkumar8/status/13313 807816719... Cam was just hired by Dane Fischer as the DOBO at W&M. I'm sure he will land a regular coaching job within a few years.

RIP Jim Phelan I'll second that. Phelan was a head coach for 49 years (1354 games), all of them at Mount St. Mary's. His teams faced the Bison 11 times - seven vs Charlie Woollum and four vs Pat Flannery.
