There were a couple of items in the past two days on Bison off-season workouts. To start, Nate Sestina has been living and working out in a tiny rural town 40 miles east of Sacramento. It's a winery that has its own full-court gym and pool, and is owned by Matt O'Reilly's boss. Matt works for a real estate investment firm in San Francisco.

Nate hasn't been able to play in any game competition, but he does have a trainer who works with him onsite periodically and is joined by a former St. Mary's player. Nate mentions he has turned down some good offers to play in Europe. Wants to play in the NBA, which is likely a long shot at this point, or the G League on a two-way contract. His goal has been made harder by the lockdown, with no teams able to watch him work out and with no NBA Summer League play.

Bucknell Grad focused on playing in NBA

A video of John Meeks playing in some scrimmages in NC with other college players was posted yesterday. It is a Meeks highlight video edited from a much longer youtube video of a lot of game action. It appears to have been filmed recently although no date is given (other that is a 2020 video). It is a highlight video, so of course Meeks looks good. Seems to be in good shape as well.

Great to see JM working hard this spring. Has he ever dunked in a game for the Bison? Looks like has gained some hops to his game and looks good!

Hopefully Timmerman has been working out too. Any word there on the western front??

If Meeks can stay healthy, he could be a very productive player.

Something the Bison really need is a few players that can create their own quality shot when needed. The view from my seat has seen quite a few possessions over the last few seasons where the play called did not allow for a quality shot.

Another Meeks highlight video from a pick-up game in NC. Most of those participating played college ball at some level.

Among other things, the Bison need him and/or Rhodes to show major improvement this year.

Yep...and he definitely needs to be more aggressive and play with confidence.

The roster has an update of weight for Alex Timmerman to 267 pounds. Hopefully shedding those 27 pounds will help him improve his mobility and become a factor.

That’s positive news. Not sure why he didn’t do it last year however, as his weight clearly affected his ability to play at a Division I level. Hopefully he can take off another 10 to 12 pounds, which would probably get him down to a good playing weight.

I'm happy with 267. That is a HUGE improvement.

Big improvement - but he played his best ball in HS at under 250. Hopefully that extra 17 pounds is almost sold.

The new roster shows a number of interesting items. The bigger ones:

- Paul Newman: now 225 lbs, was 245 lbs. Should help his mobility, but will he still have the strength/bulk to battle the bigger centers in the post?
- Andre Screen: now 7-0 230 lbs; was 6-11 210 lbs on HS roster last fall.
- Alex Timmermann : now 6-9 267 lbs; was 294 lbs. Is that enough weight loss? Was listed at 245 lbs as HS senior.
- Jake van der Heijden: now 6-9 225 lbs, was 6-8 212 lbs
- Malachi Rhodes: now 6-8 246 lbs; was 6-8 225 lbs. I think he has the body type to handle another 20 pounds if it came from the weight room or natural growth.
- John Meeks: weight down from 230 to 224.
- Miles Latimer: now 6-4 186 lbs; was 6-3 190 lbs on Stony Brook roster. With the Bison having very few players between 6-4 and 6-7, even one additional inch of true height will help.
- Josh Adoh: now 6-3 219 lbs; was 6-3 195 lbs on HS roster. Will have to see him on the court, but that sounds like a lot of weight to gain considering his size and style of play.

I know that some teams’ rosters are notoriously inaccurate, but I have found Bucknell to normally be honest based on discussions with players and with parents.

137, have the Bison ever had a true 7' player? The Bison look VERY big.

On the opposite end is Alek Delev at 6'-0" 140#. Is he the lightest player in recent Bucknell history?

The only 7-footer that I can think of is Todd O’Brien. He was listed at 7-0 250 pounds as a freshman before transferring. (Saint Joseph’s and UAB also listed him at 7-0 on their rosters later on, so I presume it was fairly accurate.) McNaughton, Muscala, Linthicum, and Skornik were all listed at 6-11 at some point in their careers. Also a couple of guys who rarely played in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s.

I think you’d have to go back a long way to find a player who was 140 pounds or less.

Great insight. Appears that many positive changes were made in conditioning. Questioning what is driving this now and did those that saw team in action last year feel Bison was in adequate shape?

Thanks for putting the comparison together, 137. Pretty cool to have a 7-footer with five A-10 offers, in addition to all our other new and returning talent.

in this unusual year, are there any rules about the date official practices can begin relative to first game? in other words, can we infer anything about the date of our first game based on this?

if, per rumors, we only play a PL schedule, are there limitations on the number of pre-season practices we can have?

As you know, normally the first allowable date for a full practice is 42 days prior to a team's season opener. However the NCAA's statement on revised rules for 2020-21 seemed to say (although not explicitly) that teams could start practice on the 14th - which is 42 days prior to November 25th, the first date when games can be played this year - regardless of when their first game is schedule. I think they wanted to do it this way to provide some clarity since schedules are going to be a work in process all the way up to the start of the season and beyond.

In the NCAA statement, there was nothing about a maximum number of practices prior to the first game. Normally teams can only practice five days a week prior to the season opener, and I imagine that will be in effect.

Quick Q— is Latimer eligible to play right away or just practice this year?

Also I am eager to see Deuce turn it loose! Fast paced play is his game.

Lastly I am predicting solid play from Jake VDH. He has high ceiling.

Latimer was reportedly going to sit this year, per NCAA rules. Given the covid issues, however, the NCAA has been liberal this year in granting waivers to play right away, and possibly Bucknell made a late decision to pursue one. That is just speculation, however, and I haven't seen anything to suggest that. His Bucknell bio continues to say he is not eligible until 2021-22.

I too would like to see some solid play from VDH. He looked overmatched last year, and his shooting - which was supposed to be a strong point - was not very good, even in practice.

Here's a nice video clip from the Bison season opener at Rider 15 years ago:

https://twitter.com/Bucknell_MBB/status/1 329076907...

Kevin Bettencourt hit a winning shot from just inside the 3-point line with 1.2 seconds left to take down the MAAC preseason favorite. The Bison ran a set play for KB, despite him having missed his previous seven shots. The Rider defender showed no respect for his shooting ability and paid the price. Some will recall this was the game where the Bison showed up late due to a fatal accident on nearby Route 1, which caused major traffic problems.
