As reported by BucknellBisonfan21, Ian Motta, a 6-6 185 lb SF from Texas (Allen HS) has committed to the Bison. Motta is originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico. Had offers from Air Force, Rice, Iona, Navy, UNCW, and Central Arkansas. Might be the first time the Bison have beaten out Rick Pitino for a recruit. Video of highlights from this past winter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3fFYOU41yQ Allen HS, btw, is in the suburbs north of Dallas. They went 31-6 this past year playing a large-schools schedule. Class 6A. The Bison have landed a couple of football players from there in the past.

A few scouting reports as posted on the Iona board: = "Top performer at the camp. Motta is a good athlete that knocked down shots from deep. Impressed with weak-side shot-blocking capabilities & and an out-of-area rebounder. Game translates to the division 1 level." - Ani Umana- Texas Boys Basketball - Lonestar Top 100 Camp Evaluations - "One of the top performers from the inaugural 5state Elite Showcase, 2021 Ian Motta orchestrated a strong performance at Triple-A Academy. Showcased versatile skillset combined with size and IQ, Motta will climb up the charts on our 2021 Rankings. " -Ani Umana- Texas Boys Basketball - Elite 32 review - "Arguably the top performer at the camp. Ian can do a multitude of things on the offensive end. Shoots it, can put the ball on the deck and make the right play in ISO situations. Motta is a player that has a chance to blow up in this upcoming year." - 5state Hoop Report- Power Rankings: SF Position 5state Elite Showcase

Glad you posted that. That's the highlight video I meant to post originally - but I accidentally had a baseball video saved on the clipboard and posted that instead. I assume you can make a few scouting trips. By Texas standards, Allen is right around the corner from San Antonio.

Ian, welcome to the Bison family!!! BTW, when was the last time that we had a Bison from PR? Also, I wonder if this means that the Bison will play in a tournament in PR at some point over the next few years.

Here is a post game interview with Ian Motta and one of his teammates. He does not seem to have a PR accent. I wonder how long he has lived in TX. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ym9e3e5w00

I wonder how long he has lived in TX. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ym9e3e5w00 He has lived in Texas for most of his life, but may well have relatives in Puerto Rico. I have done numerous business trips to PR, and one thing I can tell you is that many Puerto Ricans speak English with absolutely no accent. The students in the better schools start intensive English by first grade. And many of the upper class go to prep school and/or college in the US. By the way, Santurce - his original hometown - is one of the districts of San Juan. It is just east of Old San Juan and includes Condado, which is the area along the Atlantic Ocean with many of the high-rise condos and hotels. It also includes a significantly poorer area south of there.

Ian Motta article: https://starlocalmedia.com/allenamerican/sports/ re... interesting that he lists Princeton and Loyola Chicago as the two other schools he most seriously considered. no indication that they offered, but that they had serious talks is a positive addition to his offer list. |

Definitely interesting. Based on what he says, I would think he had offers from them. Hard to give "particularly strong consideration" to attending a school that you don't have an offer from. Motta said that he gave Princeton and Loyola-Chicago particularly strong consideration as well. “I think I would have enjoyed either school, but the overall fit at Bucknell was best for me,â€

Until last year, lived about 5 miles from Allen, TX. Predict this will be one of the better signings in years. As some know, Allen has one high school with over 5000 students. Home of Kyler Murray. Just to start in any sport there is an accomplishment. Saying they play a "large school" schedule is an understatement. Allen and some of the schools they play are larger than Bucknell with great athletes. Ian will find the Patriot League a good fit. |

To your point, Allen’s top two seniors this past season signed with Louisiana Tech ( 2nd place in Conf. USA) and Northern Colorado (2nd place in Big Sky) respectively. Both D1.

Motta's Allen team, despite losing a couple of stars to D1 programs and also losing a good transfer, is off to a 10-5 start against reasonably good competition. Motta recently scored 34 points in a 53-39 win. For the year, he is averaging 20.3 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Dallas-Fort Worth Stat Leaders One thing that has concerned me - although it is a relatively small sample - is that in all of Maxprep's highlight videos, Motta seems to score in just two ways: catch-and-shoot threes and fast break dunks. I'd like to see more moves off the dribble and in the post - but maybe those just aren't making the highlights. Shoot the 3 or breakaways.

Motta has only played four games in the past four weeks. (May have missed one game.) He has scored 69 points for an average of 17.3 ppg. His Allen team is 13-8 versus generally good competition.
