So there's actually 3 Division 1 San Diego schools: San Diego State is part of the California State University system and in the Mountain West. They've had the most success in revenue sports of the 3 (including going 30-2 in basketball this season), and Kawhi Leonard is an alum. University of San Diego is a private Catholic school that plays in the West Coast Conference. They're traditionally an average to below average WCC team, well below the tier of Gonzaga and St. Mary's UC San Diego is part of the UC system and is the largest of the 3, but were D2 in basketball up until this coming season where they will be transitioning to Division 1 in the Big West Conference.
