Smith, Betley, and Bruner all started for high majors in game one, and Cambridge started for Nevada. Smith and Cambridge were big scorers, Betley hit his threes, and all three played big minutes. Nothing unexpected, but it just emphasizes what we already knew — that players in our league can play anywhere.

No surprise at all, certainly not with some of the better players in the IL.

The main issue is one of depth when we play OOC against higher level opponents or in the NCAA tourney.

Jack Forrest, Columbia transfer, was the 3rd leading scorer being the 6th man in the near upset win by St. Joe's over Auburn, 15 pts in 20 minutes. Forrest is a sophomore and he wanted to get closer to home.

IL really needs to adjust policies in order to give players like Bruner, Betley and Smith the opportunity to play another year if they want to. Too much talent is going to other leagues but it seems that IL is always one step behind athletically.

Of all the Ivy rules, this one is the stupidest.

Prohibit bringing in grad transfers from other schools, but definitely let kids stay an extra year at their schools and play if they can qualify to do their graduate work there.

Same reason that the Ivies, alone among the conferences, are not trying to have a season, even a bubble that the Ivies were uniquely equipped to do. They just don't really care about athletics.

I remember being impressed with Forrest the one time I saw him at the Palestra. SJU is lucky to have him. If last night is any indication, the rebuild on Hawk Hill may be ahead of schedule. I know (as I teach there) they are quite aggressive about COVID control. This has enabled them to operate close to normally this semester and everyone is home now. They can effectively keep the team in a bubble at home, but road trips will be a huge challenge.

Katie Benzan was named MVP of Gulf Coast Showcase and named to the Big 10 Weekly Honor Roll after Maryland went 2-1 this weekend.

4. Katie Benzan, Maryland, guard

After three years as an all-Ivy League performer for Harvard, Benzan brought instant offense to the Terrapins. She is averaging 15.2 PPG and is shooting 51.1 percent from long range, leading Maryland with 68 3-pointers. Benzan also has 56 assists and 26 steals -- second on the team in both categories to Ashley Owusu -- and just 20 turnovers, the least of any of the Terp starters.

Remarkable season for the 8th ranked team in the country. She shoots 3 pointers and a lot of them at a 53% clip. She probably has been the most successful IL transfer student over the past several years. During her last year at Harvard, she was very good although Harvard finished 5th.

It will be interesting to see how the next group of IL BB transfer players perform at big time basketball programs. So far, the men come off the bench or are role players. Cambridge has been the most successful although his shooting % is pretty low.

Would not be surprised if IL women transferees have more success than the men but time will tell.

Jordan Bruner starred in the SportsCenter highlights last night.

An Arkansas fan site had this:

“Alabama forward Jordan Bruner single-handedly kept the Tide close down the stretch in the first half. He scored all 12 of the Crimson Tide’s points in the final 3:34 of the half by going 4 for 4 on three-point tries.
His final three-pointer came with four seconds remaining before intermission and drew Alabama within 39-38 after the Razorbacks led by 10 points on three occasions.”

Katie Benzan was named 2nd team All-Big 10 earlier in the week and named honorable mention All-America by the AP today.
