I could cry when thinking about the 2006 Wake Forest game. Sokka was rocking that night!

On this date back in 2004:

"Bucknell pulled off one of the biggest upsets in team history with a 69-66 win at No. 7/10 Pittsburgh. The defending Big East champs had been 43-2 all-time at the Petersen Events Center, and they remain the highest-ranked team the Bison have ever beaten."

Virtually every day has had an OTD feature - many of them interesting older games from the pre-scholarship days. For those who are interested in looking at them, just go the MBB twitter page and scroll down:

One note on the above. Despite what the tweet says, it was actually 1/2/2005.

I enjoy the OTD posts but another typo: The 1979 will over LaSalle at Davis Gym was 80-79 - not 80-70. I was a BU manager at the time and was headed down to open the locker rooms but wanted to see the end of the game. I was standing under LaSalle's basket when they missed what would have been the game-winning shot. I had to sprint to unlock the locker room doors. The Explorers had just beaten Alabama in Tuscaloosa and made the NCAA tournament that year. The late Michael Brooks was a beast that season.

Yeah, Brooks was a beast every season. One of the top players to ever play in Davis Gym. Over his four years at La Salle, he averaged 23.1 ppg and 12 rpg. In his worst season (freshman), he still averaged 20 ppg and 10.7 rpg. In his first four years in the NBA, he averaged about 14 ppg before suffering a serious ACL injury. He was never the same after that, since ACL reconstructive surgery didn't exist then.

I haven't been posting all of these - and a lot are definitely worth reading - but I thought this today's was interesting:

"OTD in 1945, Bucknell beat Villanova 46-34 at Davis Gym in a game that was described as "rough-and-tumble" by The Bucknellian. Many fouls were called, and the two captains were ejected after squaring off in a fistfight. Ed Netski made 3 big 4th-quarter FGs to lead BU to the win."

Here are links to all of them:

No wonder early basketball players were called "cagers". They might have been good MMA fighters!

BTW, here is an explanation on the origin of the term "cagers". Fighting for out of bound balls must have been something to see, especially when the spectators got involved.

I jokingly referred this OTD to another friend as maybe where Bill Raftery coined the phrase "it was a real rock fight"

It was probably just some on-court incident. But there is perhaps another possibility. As many know, during WW2 Bucknell served as a training center for future Naval officers, a number of whom played sports while they were at BU. It was known as the V-12 Navy College Training Program. And Villanova was a training center for enlisted men to become Army officers while pursuing their college education. So maybe the fight was an Army-Navy thing?

I enjoyed this one from yesterday. It includes a nice team picture, including Christy Mathewson:

"OTD 120 years ago, Christy Mathewson made 6 "goals" in a 32-9 win over Penn at Tustin Gym. The teams operated under different sets of rules at the time, so they agreed to switch at halftime. Penn's rules allowed dribbling & then shooting w/out passing. BU would go 12-1 that year."

I'm not sure which one is Matthewson, but the guy standing in the back row, 2nd from the right is buff. He looks like he could play now!

I believe Mathewson is the one seated at the viewer's far left.

Great OTD today, with classic video from Davis Gym, with Doug Birdsong announcing. Exactly 20 years ago - on a Wednesday night - the Bison overcame a 6 point deficit with 35 seconds left to ultimately win in OT. The huge play was a 60-footer at the buzzer by Brian Werner. That precipitated an out-of-control "Bingo!" from Doug.

Werner btw had six points in the final three seconds.

I posted this on another thread, but it's definitely worth watching: Chris Niesz's buzzer beater to give the Bison an improbable 60-59 win in Sojka exactly 16 years ago today on Senior Night. Without that shot, the Bison would not have been a 14 seed and would never have met Kansas. BRW, you can judge if a court storming was appropriate for this regular season game.

Court-storming not justified, but a senior hitting a game-winning buzzerbeater on senior night is truly special, so I will bless it as a "Niesz-storming."

Speaking of Niesz, here's an awesome shot of his huge corner three versus Kansas:

It was Senior Night for a very good team. I say that they should enjoy the moment. College is way too short. BRW, might feel differently.

I'd agree with that. A few items:

1. Bison trailed by 17 points with15:30 left, and they trailed by six with 2:15 remaining.
2. In the 15 minutes of OT, neither team ever led by more than one possession, i.e. three points.
3. Griffin ended up playing 47 minutes for the Bison - which was nothing compared to Navy's top players. Chris Harris went 52 minutes, Kaeo Kina 49 minutes, and PL POY Greg Sprink 48 minutes. Sprink was on pace to play 54 minutes had he not fouled out.
4. For the Bison, Mastro and Tyree fouled out, and Griff had four. For Navy, Sprink and Garcia fouled out, and Harris had four.
5. Sprink, who was a great player, ended up with 37 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Griffin had 21 points (on 9 FGA's) for the Bison.
6. An unsung hero for the Bison was Todd O'Brien, who came off the bench for 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. Wish he had stayed.
7. GW Boon hit a huge 3-pointer to tie the game with 40 seconds left in the third OT.
8. Navy coach Billy Lange was at Navy for seven years and his teams won exactly zero PL tournament games. In 2009 they also had a home game and lost in OT to Colgate.
