Unless something changes, the Ivy League season kicks off today at 2pm with Dartmouth at Cornell and an hour later Brown plays at Penn. Cornell (8-3) favored by 4.5 over Dartmouth (3-7). I've been really inpressed with the Big Red and wonder if their pace and depth will leave Dartmouth in the dust. Barry and Samuels have to hit 3's or this could be over. Apparently, fans will be allowed. I'm surprised to see Brown (8-7) and Penn (3-10) at EVEN, although the game is at the Pallestra. Spectators are limited, and Brown's frontcourt is hitting its stride with Gainey and Choh performing well recently, even against power competition like Syracuse and Maryland. Frontcourt seems to be Penn's weakness. Penn needs a gigantic game (season) from Dingle. I'd take Cornell (giving the points) and Brown. Here's to 2022! |

Yes, Happy New Year & Happy Opening Day!! 2 of 4 MBB & 4 of 4 WBB set to begin in a few hours. Not the ideal number, but better than many other leagues (the WCC canceled all its men’s & women’s games this weekend). I feel confident the season will end up with all games being played, even if the schedule gets changed in ways that people feel are less than fair. Without a dominant team in the men’s group, each game is going to be important for the Ivy Tournament. I agreed with your thoughts on today’s games. The women have a lot of good teams and a few rebuilding ones. Big games today with Harvard at Princeton & Yale at Columbia. Princeton’s D has to shut down Harvard’s PG & the team’s 3 pointers, if they want to start off with a W. Columbia & Yale have contrasting styles. If it’s a track meet, Columbia should be favored. |

ESPN actually has Penn by 1.5. Surprises me as well. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Penn wins today, but I am surprised by the lines I’ve seen. I’m not sure how different Cornell and Dartmouth really are in terms of level. Dartmouth has just played a much tougher schedule. Curious to see whether they can win some tight games in conference — they have shown an ability to lose them OOC, but that is while often overmatched. |

From what I have seen of both teams and given the lack of availability of certain personnel, I would be surprised to see Penn win today. But then, that’s why they play the games. |

Brown doesn’t have any quad 1 or quad 2 wins, either. The difference is that Penn has played twice as many games in those quadrants. Brown and Penn have the same number of losses in quads 3 and 4. I do agree that Brown has played a little better. But not so much so that it moves this out of the realm of a fairly even matchup at the Palestra. Does that mean it will play out that way? No. In 2020, these teams beat each other on the road. But I don’t think this is any more than a slight advantage for Brown. I won’t be surprised by much of anything here. |

Hey, we're actually starting to resemble a college basketball board again! ESPN's lines seem to shift a lot. Cornell now -5 and Brown -1. Think they read my prognostications? |

No Cornish either, who sometimes provides some scoring. And Cornell without Jones or Nazir Williams — two of their four best scorers per minute. |

Cornell is playing without leading scorer Jordan Jones, who also did not suit up Thursday for the Syracuse game. |

I guess the league’s big rosters make it at least possible to play through a lot of injuries and illness. Dartmouth missing 9, but has 11 playing today — almost a full team traditionally. |

Cornell up 52-49 at the 12min mark of the second half. If this is tight in the last couple minutes, the Green is a much better FT shooting team. Penn up 8 midway through first half. Dartmouth and Penn, both of which played tough OOC schedules, are showing well today. |

Frontcourt seems to be Penn's weakness. Penn needs a gigantic game (season) from Dingle. Well, Dingle was not the leading scorer and the best frontcourt player on the floor was a Penn guy. And the Quakers outrebounded Brown. Could have made a lot of money betting on those things. The craziness has just begun. |
