From Jon Rothstein "per source": Iona will open the 22-23 college basketball season on November 7th in New Rochelle against Penn. (I would double check that date: November 7 is a Monday. The season traditionally opens on Tuesday). Penn at West Virginia, Friday, November 18. (Almost certainly another guarantee game) |

If COVID is reasonably under control by that point, I might attend the opener as I'm only 15 minutes away from the Iona campus. |

I checked the D1 docket earlier today and noticed that TBDs were added for November 25th through 27th. This leads me to suspect that the Quakers will be in a tournament this coming season. According to Blogging The Bracket, three tournaments are set for these dates that have, or appear to have, openings: Savannah Invitational Northern Classic (Laval, Quebec) North Dakota MTE My guess is that, of the three, the Savannah Invitational would be the most logical choice. There is a tournament in Laie Hawai'i (Northshore Classic) scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend that does not have any participants scheduled outside of the host school, Hawai'i. Maybe the Quakers are headed to Hawai'i? |

Savannah seems to have the field lined up: Participants (10): Evansville (Missouri Valley), Fairfield (Metro Atlantic), James Madison (Sun Belt*), Mercer (Southern), Nicholls State (Southland), Robert Morris (Horizon), South Alabama (Sun Belt), South Dakota State (Summit), Towson (Colonial), Valparaiso (Missouri Valley) |

Penn will be hosting a MTE at the Palestra from November 25th-27th. Supposedly a full round-robin, and so far the field will include Delaware, Colgate, and Hartford. Not sure if the field will expand or stay at four. Have read that the athletic department has a sense of invigoration after "hosting" the East Regional at the Wells Fargo Center- good to see them acting on it. I also think regularly hosting such an event will bolster the odds of the Palestra being future home of the ILT, or maybe one of the First Four games. Hard to not like this move. |

Well, the Palestra will not be the home of the ILT for 5 years, at a minimum, so that really isn't an issue. Love home games, even though this is not a particularly powerful group. I thought Hartford was dropping back to Div. 3? |

Not so sure about that P38. I was hearing that Dartmouth (and maybe even Brown) might be reluctant to host. Let's hope that the IL re-evaluates the whole rotating arena thing and gets the Palestra in the rotation earlier. This season's ILT is scheduled to be at Jadwin. While the arena sucks, at least it has a reasonable capacity so we won't have this single game nonsense again. |

I haven't heard anything to that effect, but obviously, the issue with Dartmouth is lack of hotel rooms. Dartmouth (I believe) is the only Ivy school that opens up its residence halls for graduation to families and alums. Can't do that in March. |

Based on Harvard’s women’s schedule Harvard Men at Penn: 28 Jan Penn Men at Harvard: 11 Feb In my opinion, based on the Harvard schedule, this SHOULD be Penn's 2022-23 Ivy League men's basketball schedule: Sun. 01/01 at Brown Fri. 01/06 at Cornell Sat. 01/07 at Columbia Sat. 01/14 at Dartmouth Mon. 01/16 vs Princeton Sat. 01/21 at Yale Sat. 01/28 vs Harvard Fri. 02/03 vs Columbia Sat. 02/04 vs Cornell Sat. 02/11 at Harvard Fri. 02/17 vs Yale Sat. 02/18 vs Brown Sat. 02/25 vs Dartmouth Sat. 03/04 at Princeton Of course, I have NO inside info, and I'm assuming no Sunday games, so it's possible that one or more of the Saturday games could be scheduled for a day later (Sunday). But this should be fairly close in that we'll play mostly road games early in the Ivy season, the opposite of last season.

Thanksgiving weekend....good I'm staying in town this year: After several years of hitting the road to play in multi-team events (MTEs), the University of Pennsylvania men's basketball program has announced its participation in the Cathedral Classic presented by Sheraton University City, a new MTE that will take place at The Palestra over the Thanksgiving weekend. Penn will be joined by Colgate, Delaware and Hartford in the inaugural event, the four teams playing doubleheaders starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25; Saturday, Nov. 26; and Sunday, Nov. 27. Both Colgate and Delaware won their conference tournaments last year and played in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, while Hartford competed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. In addition, the four teams give Philadelphia basketball fans plenty of rooting options. In addition to the Quakers, all three visiting teams boast head coaches with deep Philly ties including two who have direct connections to the Penn program. Colgate head coach Matt Langel played high school ball at nearby Mooretown HS and then was a four-year letter winner and two-time Ivy League champion as a guard for Penn. He later served as an assistant coach with the Quakers, the Red and Blue winning Ivy titles both years he was on the bench. Hartford head coach John Gallagher was an assistant coach at Penn for two years in the late 2000s. Prior to that, he played his college ball at Saint Joseph's under Phil Martelli and served as an assistant coach at La Salle. One of three Delaware County products among the four head coaches in the field, Gallagher played his high school ball at Cardinal O'Hara (coincidentally, the same alma mater as Penn head coach Steve Donahue). Delaware's head coach, Martin Ingelsby, won the Markward Award as the top high school player in Philadelphia his senior year at Archbishop Carroll, where he played for his father—former Villanova standout Tom Ingelsby—and graduated as that program's all-time leading scorer. Ticket information for the Cathedral Classic presented by Sheraton University City will be announced at a later date. 2022 Cathedral Classic presented by Sheraton University City schedule Friday, Nov. 25 Colgate vs. Delaware, 2 p.m. Penn vs. Hartford, 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26 Delaware vs. Hartford, 2 p.m. Penn vs. Colgate, 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27 Colgate vs. Hartford, 2 p.m. Penn vs. Delaware, 4:30 p.m. |

Based on Harvard's MBB schedule, it seems like the IL is keeping the games in the same order as last year and switching the home/away. The opening game for Harvard & Princeton is 12/31 (Sat) instead of 1/1 (Sun). Sat. 12/31 at Brown Fri. 01/06 at Cornell Sat. 01/07 at Columbia Sat. 01/14 at Dartmouth Mon. 01/16 vs Princeton Sat. 01/21 at Yale Sat. 01/28 vs Harvard Fri. 02/03 vs Columbia Sat. 02/04 vs Cornell Sat. 02/11 at Harvard Fri. 02/17 vs Yale Sat. 02/18 vs Brown Sat. 02/25 vs Dartmouth Sat. 03/04 at Princeton |

So effectively, we are playing 3 Division 3 games. A joke...although other than Wilkes and the 2 Hartford games, it is a legitimate schedule against teams that are competitive teams--2 Colonial, 2 A-10, Iona is a good team and a couple of money games on the road against SEC and Big 12. |

So with all the teams in neighboring states we have to play 3 division 3 games! What impact do you think that has on recruiting? If they are coming to Hartford perhaps they could have played Albany or Siena or Marist or some D 1 school. I understanding having to play 1 a year but 3! |

I imagine that Penn is doing Hartford coach and former Penn assistant John Gallagher a favor by giving him some games. This is Hartford's last year in D-I and Gallagher is suing the Board of Regents, who told him that the university wouldn't be moving to D-III. He turned down a position on the University of Oklahoma coaching staff to stay - https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/sports/uhart-m... Brown is also playing at Hartford - Coach Martin and Coach Gallagher are close friends and the teams have scrimmaged in the past. |

In keeping with recent form, men's basketball season ticket plans did not increase in price, but they again include only 11 home games (one of which is the D3 game). Obviously, the Cathedral Classic is not included in the season ticket plans, but neither is the St. Joe's game, which is part of a Big 5 doubleheader with LaSalle-Temple.

But you're not mentioning that we get "early access" to buy tickets for those two events! Woo Hoo! BTW, if you are a season ticket holder and chose to apply the refund for last year's missed games to this year, it was 3 games of 1/4 of the season ticket price. |
