I think it's still unclear if Mike will return to the Celtics. His contract has a team option for this year. The Celts can either pick up his contract, which pays $3.5 Million, or let him become a free agent. I haven't seen any statements as to their intentions, although there may have been some.

Seems like a good move for Charles. He didn’t appear to have a job anywhere else and to be the top assistant again on a very good team keeps him in reach of getting a HC position in the future. As far as Mike, his salary is low by NBA standards but also, he doesn’t appear to be a player of consequence for the Celtics. But all teams need roster fillers with experience. |

Agree that this keeps him very much in the running for future HC jobs. In fact, it should increase his chances. I think one thing that has worked against him is the fact that he was joined at the hip with Budenholzer, who is the only HC he ever worked with (nine years). Budenhozer is a very good coach, but teams often like to see someone who has had multiple mentors and has a variety of ways to get things done. Also, developing a relationship with Brad Stevens, who runs the Celtics and is highly-regarded in basketball circles, can only help his stature. And if Boston stumbles again this coming year, it is possible that they could be looking to change head coaches. Charles would be in a prime position if he impresses Stevens.
