In Tuscon for a conference that just just ended so I thought I’d watch the Tiger women take on the #3 ranked Bruins at the poolside bar. They don’t get the PAC-12 network “because U of A is moving to the Big Ten next year.” What the what??? Tiger women up by 3 at the half. Wow!

Watched it on PAC. The lady tigers look great but just came up just short. Lost by 3. Tigers missed a desperation 3 at the buzzer.

I was able to catch the 4Q.

Gritty performance on the #3 Bruins' home court. This game was winnable but UCLA has a lot of talent and pulled it out at the end.

Kaitlyn Chen was one of the best players on the court and the Princeton freshmen, particularly Skye Belker, were poised and difference-makers. Coach Berube had them ready to play and they never backed down.

Of note to ivy hoops fans, UCLA's Kiki Rice's father John played PG for Yale in the mid-80s. And her Aunt Susan played for Stanford, before going on to serve as National Security Advisor for President Obama.

These Tigers play Oklahoma and Indiana in the Ft. Myers Tip Off tourney next week. Oklahoma is currently ranked #25/21 in the two main polls and Indiana is #18/17 but lost badly to Stanford 96-64 last Sunday. If they play like they played today, they have a shot at winning either or both of those games. Both games will be live-streamed on www.fswbucs.com.

Kiki Rice's brother Teo is a junior on Yale's men's team, but has only seen 8 minutes of action on the court so far this season. He only played in 11 games last year.

The team has improved game over game. Belker has been spectacular the last two games. Bickley has shown me a lot—if she can improve her defense we’ve got something there.

I fully expect this team to win two of the Oklahoma/ Indiana/ Villanova games. The race is on to see which Tiger hoops team cracks the Top 25 first.

Carla's teams show up ready to win, not just play. Last year they were within 2 at UConn in the last minute but one sensed that we would come up short. Yesterday that game felt "winnable". An amazing performance against the 3rd ranked Bruins on their home court. She has wins against Kentucky, NC State, a ranked FGCU squad on the road, Villanova on the road and near misses against Utah and Indiana on their home floors. The road ahead this season is very difficult but credit Carla with the willingness to play terrific teams. She recruits terrific teams, that's for sure.

Made me recall the December 1969 men's game.
