On Friday, Ithaca will play host to one of the most pivotal regular season Ivy games this season. Yale can put itself in pole position for the one-seed, and Cornell can take sole possession of first place for the first time since Steve Donahue's Sweet Sixteen team.

This one may come down to adjustments (assuming Matt Knowling plays). Can Cornell figure out a way to do any better on the glass? Can Yale avoid giving up so many live-ball turnovers? How will Danny Wolf respond after the Princeton game?

It's a shame this game didn't get the national-TV treatment, because I have to think it's going to be a war.

watched 2nd half of princeton game as i had spotty reception saturday.
i counted 10-11 misses inside of 5 feet. now some were under duress and well defended but these are shots that were missed with no fouls called and ball got to the rim.
still were down 4 with under 8.
i was impressed with the defense on the rewatch.
my concern is the frenetic pace and the anxiety of the offense.
this is what cornell preys on of course.
princeton sagged into the lane and didnt cover simmons really outside of paint or townsend.
just a lot of bodies to navigate.
will be a tall task without knowling if they also double down on wolf and poulikidas off the ball screens.

Matt Knowling will play tonight, it seems. Huge news for Yale. Having another ball-handler out on the floor will make a huge difference against Cornell's press.

yes. hope he is feeling good.
cant reaggravate this bc we need him healthy in a few weeks.
sure its tough given he is a 3 year senior.

one other thing from last few games-bez has shot it poorly from 3 obviously.
i have encouraged he hasnt settled as of late even when he didnt score much.
prefer to having him really the rim and/or dish.
but one thing princeton showed. if you sag and clog the lane it creates problems with our lack of shooting breadth.
i think they benefitted on the glass by doing this and limiting us to one and done even on bricked layups.
not sure what is transferrable to cornell but princetons scheme was well orchestrated.

That was a pitiful first half from soup to nuts. Yale couldn't hit anything, free throws included. The defense was largely good though, and they kept the live ball TOs down. The good news is that the officiating can't get worse in the second half!

the last foul on mbeng seemed absurd
but we are in quite the funk offensively
without knowling we'd be in single digs

my take--good effort esp on d.
but you cant leave that many points on the foul line in a physical game on the road.
there were other issues.
now, you cant let them beat you 2x. wolf appears to have a broken nose and maybe a concussion which is not good.
knowling helped make it close and gave us a chance.

wolf also seems to be frustrated. the calls arent really going his way.
i liked that he didnt force it but dont love his body language. still we need wolf and tmrw night will be rough if he doesnt play.

Just embarrassingly abhorrent execution down the stretch. Cornell gave Yale umpteen chances to win that thing, and the Bulldogs clanged and turnovered them away.

I remain confident that Yale can beat the two others of the top 3 on a neutral court if they play well. But the "if they play well" part seems more and more and more like an assumption we can't make. Two clunkers from two of Yale's top players two games in a row is just unacceptable. But better now than in March, I suppose. The Bulldogs have got to figure some stuff out between now and then, and maybe they ought to practice a free throw or two.

Also, the slow starts would be a good thing to avoid. Digging yourself a ten point hole (should've been 8, that foul call at the end of the half was terrible, but still) against a good team just isn't what you want to be doing. Makes the job a lot harder.

I just posted on the Cornell thread about the crazy last minute of the game when the Big Red kept handing Yale opportunities to take the game into OT (or win) and Yale couldn’t capitalize, which I kept expecting them to do.

These are 3 really tough, seasoned, well-coached, talented teams, and the margin for error is small. The “If they play well” scenario would lead to a victory for each of them over the others, but their opponents have something to say about that.

Should be a great ILT!

Point, but I'm thinking more along the lines of things like "going 42% from the stripe," which Cornell didn't have anything to do with. That's indefensible.

11-26 from the foul line is incomprehensible.

we played hard on defense and seemed connected in 2h but the bonehead plays on offense when it mattered were shocking.

cornell like princeton is defending them well schematically but guys look so frustrated. i hate some of the body language.
calls are tough.
but hit your avg on fts and you win.

now the hard part. tonight will be tough and i am concerned.

seeing more stuff on wolf nil. wonder if that kind of stuff is weighing
who knows though it wasnt lack of effor or anything.

is wolf just bleeding out or is it worse?
we'll see. but not having him as a decoy didnt help towards end
kind of like knowling last week.

we also look awful on the break. when we get it

You say that like Cornell having the #1 FT defense in the country is just random luck.* Earl has figured out something no other coach has.

*I know it's luck, but it is crazy how poorly teams have shot FTs against the Big Red. My guess is it starts to even out in the ILT with someone shooting 24 for 25 at the line.

we have a tough road ahead with how we are playing and some desperate teams. tonight will be hard and james went all in on minutes for starters.
wolf is a big q

but yale is in the ilt as is cornell and princeton.

all these marginal teams are dangerous bc talent is well dispersed. but i think penn in particular.
fans on the board gave up . back to full strength.
have good offensive talent.

i think we have some issues opposition not withstanding.
health is modt important and i think getting the bad stuff out and mean reverting-individual and collective- in march is likely best no matter how painful it is

true for all. hard to see any real fsvorite on neutral no matter the seeds. cornell is brutal to play on saturday but back to backs under that pressure is for anyone

now can we regroup and do better under pressure when it matters?

Penn is Dead. But the freshmen have a lot of potential if this year's class also is good. Penn is still 2 years away

well we shot fts well.
got outrebounded and they shot the lights out.
but we pull it out by pounding them inside.
cornell loses to brown at home and penn nearly pulls it out on the road
will be interesting.

Haven't had a chance to watch last night's game yet, but the Cornell loss is big news for Yale. Now all we need is the winner of Cornell/Princeton to lose another one and we control our own destiny again. (Not that that's exactly a slam dunk, but it's more than we had last night.)

Having now watched the game, I think it's a perfect example of why I like Yale's chances in any IL game: they can win without shooting well. Cornell and Princeton play one guard and four wings — they can't match-up in the post with Matt Knowling and Danny Wolf. The same can be said for many of the teams in the league. It's very very handy to have a major frontcourt advantage. Yale's major offensive weakness is that they have three 40%-type shooters and more or less nobody else who's a real threat from the perimeter. It's hard to play a five-out style offense when at least two players on the court at any time are ones the defense feels comfortable leaving open. When the shooters aren't hitting, the Bulldogs can get stuff done with cutting action and precision passing, but that's harder to do when the defense is packed into the paint.

Of course, it would be nice if the Bulldogs would snap out of this funk they've been in recently. The rebounding has been recently lackluster from a team that's been quite good on that front this year, and the free throw shooting has been, let's say, an adventure. Those aren't things that Yale can afford to screw up and remain competitive. My hope is that they can use these next two weeks to get right and fine-tune some things before the ILT.

also why u have to have wolf and knowling plsying together.

otherwise its easy to double down and play the odds. i am encouraged it took a historically bad ft night to lose to cornell on the road. and wolf was banged up at the end also when you had a chance still.
otherwise, so far, yale is doing fine when they are both playing full minutes.
curious columbia played them straight up mostly though when they doubled we mostly made them pay.
but worked for columbia on o as we cldnt guard anyone really and mbeng had foul probs.
life would be easier if we got another shooter.
