Brian's departure for W and M is big news on the Tiger board as well. Terrific player here and huge contributor as asst coach. Good luck to him. Tigers have played a number of CAA teams. What a natural match up that would be!

what an odd move.

you gain some recruiting territory in dmv and the tidewater.

you gain nothing in the NIL era. well maybe the stupid financial aid policy netting is not an issue.

expectations are 0 there. so i guess he has time to build it.

thought he'd wait for something better in due time.

As I said on the Cornell board, I never thought Earl was an Ithaca lifer, but W&M is an odd choice. He's a great coach and I wish well, but...

I guess this will make it better if and when he replaces Mitch.

I hope he got a great deal at W&M (salary, support, etc.) because he deserves the best. But selfishly, I'm relieved we don't have to face him next year.

It always felt weird and less fun to see a Princeton legend, former assistant and Mitch BFF on the opposing sideline, competing for the same title/ILT. So I confess I don't mind seeing Brian take his impressive talents outside the Ivy.

I just hope Cornell isn't calling up Brett MacConnell right now, ha.

I agree, an odd move. Can't see it as just salary; perhaps he sees a change to guide a program to relevance.

I thought SJ had more upside potential at Fairfield, which of course did not work out. Similarly Scott at Denver, Brennan at American.

Do you have his number so I can pass it on to Dr. Moore?

W&M basketball budget per last filing was $2.4M, Cornell $1.1M

Seems like a strange move.

Kind of like when Sydney went to Fairfield.

W and M is a very good school academically, but far from a powerhouse school and certainly not in a powerhouse conference. I wonder what tools he'll be given to be successful.

I do wish Brian well. He's a very good coach.

I suspect it has to do with a combination of things - closer (less/easier travel) to fertile recruiting territory, easier recruiting sell, perceived greater opportunity for advancement (specifically, easier to create a strong record within the conference that might help with a next move), financial aspects. As a state employee, possibly some significantly better fringe benefits. And don't discount the personal living environment as Williamsburg is close to Newport News/Hampton Roads which has become a popular place to live especially if you like being on the water. Maybe Chris Mooney has convinced him of the appeal of the setting. Probably also some other reasons none of us will know.

I like the area to visit (family member graduated from CWM); although I would find the heavily colonial-focused atmosphere repetitive year-round, it might be ideal for others.

You neglected to mention Busch Gardens Amusement Park

But seriously, a much more salubrious climate than Ithaca, to quote Thomas Jefferson. The Chesapeake Bay is right there for sailing as you mention, and for landlubbers, nice golfing opportunities with a longer season. I don't know Coach Earl's recreational proclivities, but I personally love the area.

10 years ago I was in a Foursome with Brian in a fundraiser for Princeton hoops. He hit a wedge to one inch on a par three and promptly stated it was the best shot he ever hit. I recalled that shot in a Conversation With him in January. He laughed and said it is still his best shot. He also admitted he rarely plays golf. I shall always be able to say I was with him when he hit his finest career shot.

Thinking a bit more, I wonder if this portends some conference affilation move.
