Skilled coach, but he's always falling upward for more money--it's his third job in 8 years.

I don't have much of an emotional investment in his career trajectory. But if I did, this pattern would make me uncomfortable....

I do have an emotional investment in Kyle Smith because I did get to know him fairly well when he was our head coach at Columbia. Kyle is a very friendly man who happens to be a great basketball coach. Yes, Stanford will be his third head coaching position in about eight years, and he is making much more money than he did at Columbia, but that's because of his hard work and coaching skills and no other reason.

Kyle did what partners at big law firms and investment banks now do on a routine basis—they decamp for bigger bucks and always couch it in other terms, such as, it’s a better platform, or I will get more support, while hastening to add that he wishes his former school/firm/ employer only the best of luck.

Smith gave WSU five good years and rescued it from basketball purgatory to the Round of 32. The Cougars have a shaky conference future with the demise of the PAC-12—they’ll be playing WCC games for a couple of years, but after that nobody knows—while Stanford at least will be in the ACC. I hope Smith is getting a big raise, but he has no reason to feel guilty about this move.

I’m a little surprised that he took the Stanford job… many coaches before him have failed, but then again, Palo Alto is a pretty pretty nice place to raise a family. He has three young boys, I believe.

Though Mike Montgomery showed you can have success there.
