I must make some corrections to my prior post. The big 6-11 center’s last name is spelled Langs. But the bigger oversight was that the Bears only title was in 1986. Not 1985. Close, but no cigar. Langs’ had actually graduated the prior year. The ‘86 team was lead by 6-9 Sr center Jim Turner (19.2 8.2. 1.5) and senior point guard Mike Waitkus (12.2. 3.4. 5.8). Both are in the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame. The Bears finished 16-11 and 10-4 Ivy.
They also had a 5-11 Jr guard from Central Islip,L.I. named Keiron Bigby (8.8. 1.7. 2.0) who also played deep safety for the football team. He had one of the greatest games for a Bear D-Back when he returned two interceptions for TD’s against Yale to lead the Bears to a 27-14 victory at Brown Stadium. This occurred in the fall of 1984 when he was a sophomore. Both returns were in the last minute of each half, and they covered 91 and 102 yards respectively! He also had another INT and return of 24 yards in the first period, making for a return total of 217 yards. His longest broke a Brown record. Another interesting aspect of that game is that it marked the first time Brown defeated Yale three years in a row in the then 104 year old rivalry. I still remember a Yale coach leaving the press box yelling, “One guy beat us! One darn guy beat us!â€
