It gets confusing for what I think are four reasons: (a) many internet sites are out-of-date; (b) people confuse varsity teams with club teams; (c) some schools that are D2/D3 in other sports are D1 in water polo; and (d) a few D3's actually participate in the D1 championships. For example, I just realized that there is another program in Pennsylvania that plays in the D1 Eastern championships, i.e. Gannon College.

I can't find a comprehensive list, but below aere most of the schools that play in the D1 championships:

Fordham University
U.S. Naval Academy
George Washington University
Wagner College
Johns Hopkins University
La Salle University
Gannon University
Harvard Univ.
St. Francis Brooklyn College
Princeton University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Some of the above appear to be D2/D3 schools that play up into the D1 championships. I think there are a few that I missed as well.
