Any word on Alex Pechin in the NFL? I’m a little surprised he didn’t land on a practice squad.
It’s unusual for NFL teams to carry kickers on the practice squad, especially punters. Unlike position players, kickers can practice and develop without having to be in a team setting. In contrast, position players can’t learn an offense or a defense, or develop their skills, in a vacuum. Out of approximately 480 practice squad players this year, eight are place kickers and two are punters.
If a kicker gets hurt, there are 30 or 40 kickers who are willing to show up on one days notice to audition for a spot. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pechin surfaces somewhere either later this year or next year.
