I believe that players who signed contracts during the off season are not eligible for trades until Dec. 15 so they couldn't have moved him until yesterday, assuming they wanted to. I might have the details wrong, but there's some sort of provision.
You've got it essentially correct. The first date most free agents can be traded is December 15th- or three months after signing if that date is later.
The other issue for Mike is his defense - which is not stellar. Still he definitely should have some value for a contender. His December stats look like this:
78 minutes
52 points
6-9 on twos
11-24 on threes
19 rebounds
For the year, he is hitting 44.3% (35-79) on threes.
