Opening night results:

1. Loyola lost at DePaul by six points. Loyola is an experienced team, with three players back for a fifth year. For some reason, neither of the 6-10 Ilic twins played. Both were significant contributors last year as frosh.

2. Colgate lost 88-87 at Buffalo. Fifth year Tucker Richardson, the preseason POY, got 23 points, and their highly touted freshman guard from Washington state, Braedan Smith, had 20 points. Their two big men, Records and Woodward, both got in foul trouble, which may well have cost them the game.

3. Holy Cross lost by seven points at home to Siena. Their strong fifth year PF, Gerrale Gates, had 25 points. HC trailed by double digits for most of the first half but made it a close game for most of the second half. HC's freshman PG, Will Batchelder, played a quiet 29 minutes. Their transfer from Air Force, Joe Octave, had 16 points but was 3-9 on FTs.

4. Boston U beat Northeastern 72-63. Sixth year SF Walter Whyte had 27 points and 13 boards. If he stays healthy, he is one of the two strongest candidates for POY.

5. Army beat Keystone College, a D3 from Christy Mathewson's home town near Scranton, 110-65. That matchup makes even less sense than playing Lebanon Valley. Army used about 20 players and almost all of them scored.

6. Navy won at William and Mary 75-59, pulling away midway through the second half. I fear this is going to be Dane's final year as their coach. Meanwhile, Ed DeChellis continues to roll in new players in quantity and keeps winning. Good coach.

7. Lehigh lost at Syracuse 90-72. Evan Taylor, who is one of the PL's top players, had 20 points. This Syracuse team is probably not as good as traditional Orange teams.

8. Lafayette lost 67-54 at Miami after leading at the half. They started a freshman PF, Josh Rivera, and played their two transfers a lot: center Justin Van der Baan, a 7-footer from Boston College, and TJ Berger, a 6-4 guard who played for Georgetown and San Diego. His dad is the coach at Westtown School, a strong basketball program outside of Philly. CJ Fulton, a SG from Northern Ireland who made PL all-rookie team last year, led LC with 17 points.
