Looks like Lee is building himself a nice resume. If the Bucks play well and advance in the NBA playoffs over the next few years, he might get some looks as a head coach.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

Nice paragraph on Charles in an ESPN article posted today about future NBA head coaching prospects including a standout quote from a peer who thinks it is highly likely to happen

High praise for Charles in the article. Being a protege of Budenholzer, who is one of the league's top coaches, should help him advance. Budenholzer, btw, was Mike Muscala's coach during his five-season tenure with the Hawks.

Lee today is reportedly one of the candidates for the open Oklahoma City job:

"Spurs assistant coach Will Hardy, Bucks assistant Charles Lee, and Oklahoma City assistant Mark Daigneault are among the candidates who have received strong consideration for the Thunder‘s open head coaching position, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times."

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/11/steins-latest -...

Daigneault at one time was an assistant at HC under Ralph Willard. He has been OKC's D-League coach and an assistant for the past six years.

From Woj on ESPN:

“ ESPN Sources: Celtics president Brad Stevens has started to get permission to speak to head coaching candidates, including assistants Chauncey Billups (Clippers), Darvin Ham and Charles Lee (Bucks), Jamahl Mosley (Mavericks) and Ime Udoka (Nets).”

It was probably a longshot even then, but imagine how much better the Bison would be right now had they hired Charles Lee in 2015 instead of ND.

The prerequisite for an organizations success is correctly choosing the candidates to interview for the job, and then sending out a press release for the world to see.

With Charles serving as an assistant coach of the Bucks and Ryan Frazier working as the head video coordinator of the Suns, a Bison is certain to end up with a championship ring.

Well if he came back and took the bison job imagine the turmoil…the Bucks switch 1-5 across the board irrespective of opposing teams personnel! That’s already been labeled as malpractice when ND did it. Charles Lee employs it and “he’s a great coach”…Interesting

The Athletic profiled the remaining candidates for the Wizards job. Here's what they said about Lee:

Charles Lee
Milwaukee Bucks, assistant (2018-present)
Atlanta Hawks, assistant (2014-18)
Bucknell, assistant (2012-14)
Professional player in Israel, Germany, Belgium (2006-10)

What are his defining characteristics as a coach?

There’s a couple of things. The first thing is his ability to connect with everybody: players, coaches, front office people, performance staff, equipment managers. He just has a personality that attracts people. He has a gregarious personality. He’s the guy that when he walks in the room, you just wanna be around him. And I think he coaches like that, too. You get around people who when they start coaching, they’re different than who they are as a person. And I always thought Brad Stevens, that’s what makes him special is he can take all his beliefs and apply them to who he is as a person and coach that way. And that’s what Charles does. That’s what really makes him great. He’s a great teacher. He also just dives into who you are as a person. Whether it’s a player, a colleague, he just makes you feel like he cares about you, and I think that’s what makes him special.

Do you have a feel for how he views the game from a strategy standpoint?

I think he’s got beliefs that probably filter down through Budenholzer because that’s the one person he’s been with as a head coach. Offensively, I would say he probably believes in playing fast, playing free, allowing you to be who you are as a player. And offensively, I think that’s important. He will figure out what makes you great and try to put you in those positions. He’s big on that.

It’s the same thing defensively. It’s, how can he keep things simple enough to free up your mind to go out and just give everything you’ve got on the defensive end? How can he do that so there’s a sense of togetherness?

Is there anything the Bucks have done — whether with a player, a scheme or anything else — that you look at and see his fingerprints on?

I think the fact that in Milwaukee, there’s an environment that is created that whether it’s a role player, a superstar, a young player, everybody feels like they’re cared about and invested in, and he has a big impact on that environment.

Have you had any moments where you saw him do something and you thought, that looks like a future head coach?

I think when you just listen to him speak to the team, like when he’s doing scouts and things like that, he has a presence to him that is very calm, very commanding but also he speaks to the team with great humility. I think that’s a skill. And you can just tell it when he’s speaking to the team.

To me, the biggest thing now for future head coaches is, can you be the CEO of a team? It’s less X’s and O’s and more, can you command respect? Can you get people to trust you and can you incorporate everybody from players to the front office to performance team (to buy-in)? And I think he understands that.

You know him well. Let’s say he gets this job. What would you predict is his coaching demeanor?

I just don’t think he would stray from his personality, and I think he’s very laid back and patient. When he needs to hold guys accountable, I don’t think he’s gonna yell and scream. He’s gonna come with a tone where you understand that this isn’t good enough, but he’s not gonna be grabbing his hair and going down into a crouch and throwing his hands up. I think he’s gonna be a very calm and move-onto-the-next-play kind of coach.

That’s a pretty good characterization, and it is one that can lead to a future head job. I think some of the struggles the Bucks had in making adjustments could be a negative. But then again, his team could be NBA champions.

Not a surprise. Since most NBA head coaches are hired to be fired, at least they will have some difficulty doing that because of the legacy.

In ESPN’s annual survey of all of the NBA general managers, Charles Lee was tied with Kenny Atkinson as their pick for the number one assistant coach in the NBA. Atkinson, as many of you know, was the coach of the Nets for four years following a number of years as assistant coach under Mike Budenholzer and Mike D’Antoni. He is now the top assistant at defending champion golden state, and recently turned down the head coaching job at Charlotte, waiting for a better job to come along. Lee and Atkinson coached together while at Atlanta under Budenholzer, who continues to be Lee’s boss.

I would not be surprised if Charles breaks through at the end of this season and lands a head coaching job.
