Updating the timeline of when Bison recruits have committed in the past. Mentally I kind of divide them into four buckets: Very early (winter/spring of junior year); early (mid-June to mid-August); normal (mid-August to mid-November; and late (after the end of November signing period).

Chris Hass 1/9 (of junior year)
Ryan Frazier 1/20 (of junior year)
Dom Hoffman 4/7 (of junior year)
- - - - -
JC Show 6/21
Steven Brown 6/23
Alex Timmerman 6/26
Ben Oberfeld 7/3
Don. Brown 7/8
C. Klebon 7/11
R. Hill July (date not clear)
Jake Van der Heijden 7/29
Z. Thomas 7/30
J. Azzinaro 7/31
Nate Jones 8/1
Nate Sestina 8/2
Deuce Turner 8/3
Kimbal Mackenzie 8/8
- - - - -
Justin Castleberry Mid-August (?)
Joshea Singleton 8/14
Mike Muscala 8/18
Darryl Shazier 8/31
DJ MacLeay 9/3
Andrew Funk 9/4
Enoch Andoh 9/5
Steven Kaspar 9/7
Nana Foulland 9/7
Todd O'Brien 9/12
Alexander Rice 9/12
Ben Robertson 9/14
Bruce Moore 9/16
John Meeks 9/19
Malachi Rhodes 9/19
Ben Brackney 9/23
John Griffin 9/26
Bryson Johnson 10/1
Joe Willman 10/2
Jimmy Sotos 10/3
GW Boon 10/5
Cory Starkey 10/6
Avi Toomer 10/8
Bryan Cohen 10/11
Zach Evans 10/12
Pat Behan 10/17
Probese Leo 10/20
Darren Mastropaolo 10/23
Jason Vegotsky 10/27 (Per Scout; not sure if this is right)
Stephen Tyree 11/1 (?)
Cam Ayers 11/17
- - - - -
Walter Ellis 4/8 (of senior year)
Kahliel Spear 4/9 (of senior year)
Paul Newman 4/13 (of senior year)
Matt O'Reilly 5/5 (of senior year) - replaced JC Show

Fwiw, the quality of the players who committed at the end of July and start of August has been very high - Jake Van der Heijden, Z. Thomas, John Azzinaro, Nate Jones, Nate Sestina, and Kimbal Mackenzie. Hopefully Deuce Turner turns out to be as good as the top names on this list.

One other thing I always find fascinating is the group of players who committed "very early". Only three Bison in the scholarship era have committed before June 21st - Chris Haas, Ryan Frazier, and Dom Hoffman. Amazingly they were all in the same recruiting class and all committed by early April of their junior years.

The above list has 24 names. Interestingly at the same point last year, there were 43 names with offers. One reason for the difference may be that they had four scholarships to play with last year, and part may be a reaction last year to the problems they had in landing players the previous year when only one commitment came before March. Those are complete guesses, and much of the difference may just be happenstance.

The Dorsey brothers are taking unofficial visits to Penn State and Georgetown per the link below. Not a good sign that they aren’t making a stop in Lewisburg on their trip to Central PA

Any predictions on who in this year’s incoming class will be the most college ready to contribute from Day One?

Also I think Funk could have a monster year. Am I alone?

Maybe belongs in a different thread, but for this year’s incoming group, perhaps Timmerman, Van der Heijden or Rhodes could have impact. Basically we need some inside presence which is why I went with that group, even through Timmerman night be the most “inside” of that group. As for players coming back, yeah I’d go with Funk and Sotos stepping up and I’d love to see Ellis be improved as well.

I think the four incoming players all have different strengths, weaknesses, and playing opportunities:

Van der Heijden - I think he will be the most skilled offensive player, one capable of scoring at a good level in PL games. But his defense may be an issue. Has some similarites to Zach in that he has enough offensive ability to play the three but probably can't guard an opposint three.

Rhodes - Looks like a better rebounder and defender than Van der Heijden, but doesn't have the offensive ability. His defense and rebounding ability likely will earn him some minutes, especially if they use use him some as an undersized center or if they use Moore some at center.

Timmerman - Should be able to rebound at this level, and his size gives him an opportunity to see backup center minutes. But he may struggle to guard D1 post players - which is an issue with most freshmen post defenders since it is so different than HS ball. Players like Sestina and Foulland had problems with post defense as freshmen. Among other things, freshmen need to learn that refs ignore even extremely hard contact when an offensive post player starts his move - but then they will call even minor contact as the shot is being put up. It's all about timing the contact and learning to really bang the player hard but early.

Rice - Has a chance to get 10 mpg as the backup PG, but he will have to prove he can handle the point. In HS and AAU ball, he played on teams with future P6 PG's and thus played much of the time at SG. Can he handle a D1 PG role as a freshman?

I don't see Rice ever playing the point for significant minutes. To me he fits in the role of the Funk - Ellis combo guard mix

That may turn out to be true - but I know the staff recruited him as a guy who could give them significant minutes at the point. I think he'll be given every opportunity to win the backup PG role. Hopefully he can do it.

Supply and Demand might throw him in that role. From watching his tapes his handle and overall confidence looks solid but I don't see a lot of playmaking. For a backup PG just being able to not make mistakes is adequate however

Brewster has set up his official visits, and a Bucknell student manager, who attended Hotchkiss with Brewster, reports one of those visits will be to Bucknell.

There isn't really another good option at PG. Funk could do it, but he's a natural 2. I think Rice will have to fill that role.

One thing about Rice is that he has had little opportunity to play the point, having always been on teams with very high-level PG's. During his freshman and soph year at St. Anthony's, the team had PG RJ Cole, who is now at UConn, plus PG Ithiel Horton, who is now at Pitt. Then at Mater Dei as a junior, they had senior Kenny Jones, who looked really good at the point for Loyola last year. Jones had a dozen offers, including one from St. Joes. Finally as a senior at The Patrick School, the starting PG was Al-Amin Dawes, who had tons of P6-conference offers and ended up at Clemson.

Also Rice's AAU team had a number of quality PG's, including Jhamir Brickus, a 2020 player who has multiple A-10 offers and many others. Two of their other part-time PG's had multiple D1 offers as well.

So Rice ended up largely playing SG at his various teams. The question we will see answered over the next year or two is how good are his PG skills.

Jones had a quiet senior year for a good Loyola team in L.A. Averaged less than 10 ppg but did hit 46% on threes. Signed on for a post-grad year at Vermont Academy and then blew up during June and July. Apparently had a very impressive AAU run.

Per this highlight video, looks like a very good assist guy with nice court vision, too. Also love the steal and halftime buzzerbeater early on.

That's too bad. Thought Bison might have a shot for next year. W&M, of course, is now coached by Dane Fischer, and they are going to be awful this year. This past season they ranked #219 (Pomeroy) - which caused their coach to be fired - and then three of their top four players transferred out, along with their top sub. All went to teams in stronger conferences. Also the only recruit they had signed opted out of his commitment, forcing Dane to find three new recruits in late Spring, none of whom is going to be a difference-maker this year. So there is lots of room for Stone to earn playing time.
