This is not a good team. It’s not a bad team. It’s a middle of the road Patriot League team which is something we haven’t seen for a decade.

I agree. We have been spoiled by having a successful, talented team every year. This is going to be an up-and-down season. If the 3's are falling, we have a good shot at winning. If the 3's are not falling, it will be difficult to win.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

So, is there anything the staff can do to create more consistent play, particularly on offense? It seems there should be more that can be done other than throw your hands up and say “the threes just aren’t falling tonight.” When you’re shooting over 50% from two and 17% from three, seems to me it makes sense to make adjustments and take fewer threes.

And this team is probably not going to finish above .500 for the year (overall) unless something changes.

Totally agree with Bison54's point here about Meeks. He has established himself as our most consistent and probably best player. Put him in the high post or low post and let him go to work! If fouled, he is a good foul shooter, unlike some of our other guys. Get him the ball in the middle!

Two years ago, the Bison staff shifted Zach Thomas on some sets from the wing to the high post and let him work his magic. He nearly led the country in FT's attempted and made, as I recall. Why not Meeks in the same set??

This "circle" of guys on the 3 point line and taking turns attempting 3's will not work most nights! Need to have some cuts and X motion and some post play.

And please, Paul, work on a second or third move in the post.

I was thinking the same thing during last night's game!

Can’t use 10 guys would be a start. That’s 11 with Bruce back. It’s just repetitive at this stage to elucidate yet again. The shot off the 1st half inbounds with 9 seconds after being gifted back the ball was as bad, if not worse (except for the game clock), than Avi’s last gasp attempt.

Does anyone know what was left on the shot clock and whether we had a TO available?

Nothing you can do now but buckle down and work through it. They should be 3-0.

Kudos to Meeks for his 3-3 FT’s to tie it and to him and Jake being the only two to take charges in the last two games.

Playing time is up for grabs for those that want to get in and mud wrestle it out.

I agree about Meeks. My concern continues to be with the coaching. We are watching a true definition of the word insanity. I do not see this changing anytime soon!

Will only change when the coach changes. Coaching in the final minute was beyond inept.

We lost the game in the period when it was 39-39 and we went up 2 to 41-39. Just bad basketball over the next 7-8 minutes of game play. Can’t keep expecting our 5’’s to cover opposing 1’s. That said, your not beating anybody shooting 4-26 from 3. Virtually nothing good happens when we go into the box. Tough way to play

Kids should have never lost that game

I think the big change with this club is we have no ability to score on the inside. Period. First year in 8 without Moose, Nana, or Nate. Our bigs can’t score. Period.

That's my disappointment with Newman. Not sure I've ever seen someone with that post size put up so many shots leaning away from the basket where he essentially ends up shooting from his hip. I have to imagine the coaches are working on trying to get him to take it up strong and at least get fouled, but not seeing a lot of progress.

He appears to be a below-the-rim player who needs space to get off his shot. Unfortunately, he does not have any kind of J that he has shown in a game. If he had one, he might find it easier to get off a shot.

It’s the 17th game. That issue with all due respect was evident in the first 10:00 minutes of the Fairfield game. Time to move on. If you don’t like that your option is Timmerman. Can’t go to him in crunch time (other than to go back outside or swing the ball)...that needs to be a coaching directive. Spear shouldn’t be able to take 3’s with the game tied at the 2:00 mark. What’s the sense of writing about player weakness at this juncture of the year - that’s ok in OOC because your trying to evaluate the best 8-9 man rotation, if not 7-8. Paul was the only option at center from day 1. Playing Meeks there against an opposing 5 is not going to work. That puts John inside and Bruce outside. We are who we are. Task now is to win and we need to keep the rotation tight and compete. Different personnel then prior years. We were just fine last game other than the fact that we really shot 12% from 3 discounting Sotos buzzer beater.

As far as playing 10 or 11 guys, here are my thoughts:

1) AT is not ready to contribute. I'll leave it there. Not sure about Rhodes. Did not see much of him in the game to tell.

2) A positive from my 300 mile round trip to watch the loss to Navy was the play of Rice and VDH. Play them even more, especially VDH! He has a nice looking shot and can also drive. Play him.

3) Maybe play Rice on a unit with Sotos and let Jimmy be the 2 guard. Funk can play as a 3 against most PL teams.

4) Play Spear more. He can be a back-up center vs. most of the PL. Ask him to hit the boards more, especially on the offensive end. He has the ability to be an above the rim guy for us.

5) Overall, not sure whom I would drop from the first half rotation other than AT and maybe MR. And when is Ben R. coming back? We could use some of his slashing ability from the wing.
