I know we are all still following the basketball season for the Bison, somewhat disappointing as it has been (let's face it - we have been spoiled over the past decade or so). While I still think the guys have a chance to make the playoffs interesting, after talking to a friend of mine from 'Nova, I thought I would bring up the subject of the 2020 Bison football schedule. I was wondering if anyone knows the complete schedule yet? As far as I know, we only have one opening to fill on the schedule, and it looks like another tough year ahead. Other than the 6 PL games, the Bison are slated to play both Army and Princeton on the road and Cornell and Villanova at home (that Villanova game seems strange, as we hosted them last year at Lewisburg - 2 straight games at home against them seems odd). That leaves one out-of-conference game left - does anyone have a clue as to who it is (Sacred Heart)? Just curious if anyone knows, as a break from the b-ball season discussions would be refreshing.

It might be Sacred Heart, as the Bison have played them three straight years, two at home and one at Fairfield. While it is possible that it was a two-for-one series, it is certainly possible that the Bison owe them one more game.

Last year there were rumors that BU had agreed to a series with VMI, but I'm not sure of the accuracy of that report and not sure, even if correct, if the series would begin this year.

Whoever it is, I hope it's a winnable game. Last year's schedule - with four certain OOC losses out of five, was a bit too challenging.

Agreed. I also heard about the VMI series, so it might still happen. My biggest surprise is still 2 straight home games with the 'Nova Wildcats.

Did a little more checking. There is a VMI series on the horizon - but not his year. BU will play VMI four straight years from 2022-25.

Right now this is the "known" schedule for 2020:

9/4 @ Army
9/12 Villanova
9/19 Bye or 5th OOC game
9/26 @ Princeton
10/3 Cornell
10/10 Lafayette
10/17 Fordham
10/24 @ Georgetown
10/31 Colgate
11/7 @ Lehigh
11/14 Bye or 5th OOC game
11/21 @ Holy Cross

Don't like the bye to be after Game 10, but that seems to be the most likely scenario.

My preference for OOC games is to have one buy game (Army etc), one other tough game (Villanova, top tier Ivy, etc), two "even" games (St. Francis, Sacred Heart, Bryant, VMI, Duquesne, etc.), and one where BU in a normal year is a favorite (Marist, Valpo, Howard, LIU, etc)

I do like the Ivys on the schedule. I do agree that an 11th game being against a Bryant, SHU, Duquesne, etc. would be good. I guess I don't mind the possibility of a late bye week in November. I do like the 3 straight home contests in October - great football weather. Regardless of who #11 is, a challenging schedule.

Schedule is now finalized with the addition of Penn.

9/4 @ Army
9/12 Villanova
9/19 @ Penn
9/26 @ Princeton
10/3 Cornell
10/10 Lafayette
10/17 Fordham
10/24 @ Georgetown
10/31 Colgate
11/7 @ Lehigh
11/14 Bye or 5th OOC game
11/21 @ Holy Cross

Very hard first four games, once again.

Wow, is six years pretty rare in football scheduling?

Yes. Bucknell has played two opponents - Cornell and Marist - for much longer periods (14 and 13 consecutive years respectively) fairly recently, but I'm not sure they were for contracts of six years or more.

PL just issued some rules on fall sports that are a bit unclear. One thing that is clear is that football will only start practice 20 days before the game at Army - as opposed to the normal 29 days. Also almost every practice will take place after school starts - meaning shorter practices. Also team apparently will have to bus to Army on the morning of the opening game. Coupled with the cancellation of all spring practices and the loss of summer conditioning/lifting programs, Army might well be a 100-point favorite. Hopefully that game gets cancelled.

The PL rules:

1 Patriot League competition will begin at the end of September, with the expectation that League play will be completed prior to Thanksgiving;
2 Non-League competition will not begin prior to Friday, Sept. 4;
3 Patriot League member institutions will confirm that non-League competitors are following comparable health and safety protocols in advance of any contest; and,
4 No Patriot League teams will fly to competitions and, with rare exceptions, regular-season competition will exclude overnight travel.

Good. The statement definitely needs updating. I don't think the Presidents fully understood the situation.

Agree 137. Altho why they may not have is puzzling.I get the complexity of planning into a possibly ever changing environment in conjunction with multiple other leagues.Ambiguous parameters is not an effective way to set the conversation.

Lafayette just cancelled their Sept 12 football game at Navy. Per the article below: "Lafayette informed Navy it will not bring its football team back to campus with enough time to meet medical advisory guidelines established by the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)."
...
"In order to meet that mandatory six-week acclimation in time to play Navy on Sept. 12, Lafayette would need to bring its football players back to campus in late July and begin practice on Aug. 3."

An ill omen for Bucknell at Army on Sept 4?

I don't think there is any chance at all of playing Army on the 4th. What could happen, however, would be for Bucknell to play there on October 10th. Army is scheduled to play Princeton then - but that game will very likely be cancelled. Right now the Bison are scheduled to play Lafayette on that date, but the PL schedule is being adjusted and the LC date could be changed. BU and LC will both probably have open dates on September 26th as things stand now.

Not sure if this deserves a separate subject heading, but Pennlive is reporting that Joe Susan has sued the university, asserting that he was forced out because of his age.

I like Joe, but if this report is true, it is an absurd lawsuit. Joe and his staff did a reasonably good job of recruiting, except at QB, but the offense he ran was worse than that of my local HS. Also he had solid defenders on the roster, but extremely predictable schemes.

As a defense to what sounds like an absurd lawsuit, consider what Joe accomplished:

- 17-34 record in the PL
- 38-61 overall record, despite having had a reasonable OOC strength of schedule for most of the years, with Marist and Cornell perennial opponents.
- A final season record of 1-10

It's not surprising he was forced out, albeit with a soft landing spot of what seemed to be a no-show job. What is surprising is that he was kept in the position for nine years despite poor results. Although Bucknell did spend a bit less than many other PL schools, he had a large number of scholarships - with much more of a level playing field than Tim Landis or Tom Gadd had. Had he won 45% of his PL games, that might have been acceptable. But winning 33% clearly was not.

If he gets even one penny in damages, that will be excessive and a travesty.

I agree that it was time to make a change based on Coach Susan's record. Hopefully, there was nothing said behind close doors pertaining to his age.
New season, new team, new dream . . .
