I can think of one who could coach the match-up zone, and also had a lot of fire on the bench.

I would LOVE to see the match-up zone taught again at Bucknell. Glory Days!!!

I think various teams and coaches have tried match up type zones in the last 10 years and they are far less effective with more players being willing and able to shoot 3's. In the 90's and early 2000's teams were still built to score at the basket. Now, teams are more than willing and better prepared to shoot 3's, which the match up zone gives up. I think some coach would have to make some changes in the way Pat's type of match-up zone worked in order for it to be successful today.

Different defenses all have weak points and strong points. The real key is to switch up defenses as often as practical. Keep 'em guessing. Don't be predictable.

We also changed how we defended in PL play (from what I could see) vs OOC by fronting the interior (as opposed to getting stuck behind in OOC) as well as having our bigs more focused on obstructing easy entry passes. In OOC we had much greater difficulty stopping dribble penetration by opposing guards.
Again, I could be totally wrong as it is based on a one time only view with sometimes crappy camera angles. Only way to fully understand is to break down every possession on film. Too much movement and complexity and different sets also to make blanket generalizations.

234 & 54 - Agree with both viewpoints. Very few people play matchup for a reason - it is difficult to execute and virtually all kids aren’t schooled in it. I also see benefit in being more tactical defensively. 64 points to BU on their home court is not atrocious by any means. We lost the game in the first 10 minutes when we struggled offensively and they came out of the box hitting their first 4 3 pt FGA’s. Couldn’t keep Spear on the court unfortunately because he struggled guarding Mahoney and lost concentration on dive cuts by Whyte. Not easy to win the league year in and year out.
Bison will be back and it will be even more fun on the rising

Matt Langell is a horrible Coach. Can you imagine giving up 64 points to BU on your home court in the PL Championship. I can’t believe he didn’t play a “match-up†zone!
And, how about Joe Jones. He’s so lucky. Did you see how many times down the stretch BU’s point guard Harper had to check Ivanauskas in low? With 3 fouls no less. How many open 3’s was he going to allow having big guys chasing Burns, Richardson, Ferguson et. al. Can’t believe he didn’t use a “match-up†zone!
And, as far as the genius (oops, that might have been me!) who suggested the tactical changing of defenses...I believe BOTH teams played MTM on 100% of game possessions.
Colgate and BU should FIRE ML & JJ!

BTW - there was a coach in last years PL Championship that gave up 94 pts! Nobody had anything to say about that brilliant bastard. Maybe CU or BU should hire him if Bucknell can’t get him?

So Bucknell and Colgate both lost to BU 64-61 and both had missed threes in the closing seconds. Anybody make that bet?
