Spear entered the transfer portal today. I'm not terribly surprised. Hopefully they don't lose any key players.

I hate to see this! But I also witnessed with my own eyes his frustration this past season! 137, I agree with you about losing really anyone that is a key rotation player!

Wow...hard to lose his experience inside. I’d say he was a rotation player, but perhaps not a top 3. It was obvious players were frustrated last season.

Part of his problem is that he was undersized for a center but couldn’t stay in front of forwards defensively. With Screen’s arrival, his minutes might’ve fallen next year. It would be nice to see Malachi Rhodes, assuming he is here next year, take a step up as Spears’ replacement.

Or he was horrifically coached.

This is really a terrible reflection on the state of the program. Spear is ready to put in the work. No one has doubted his motor and growth from freshman to sophomore years was huge.

Then what does is say about American, HC, Lehigh and every other PL team that loses transers year in and year out. The NCAA has made it easier than ever to transfer. You can't assume this is solely due to coaching. He's from Texas and it can be tough going to school so far from home.

This is tough to take. Unfortunately given what the NCAA is doing re: transfers, we are going to see this more regularly as time goes on.

Perhaps. There has definitely been more publicity about transfers - but the reality is that over the past few years the number of transfers has been virtually unchanged. For example, here is the number of D1 transfers by year for the past three years:

2019 - 694
2018 - 704
2017 - 689

It is possible we will see an increase this year due to factors related to the corona-virus. With players separated from their teammates for the entire spring, it may decrease the bond that holds teams together and decrease the bond between player and school. Only time will tell.

As for Spear, he will be only the fourth Bison transfer in almost 20 scholarship seasons - and one of the four had no choice. I am just hoping he is the only one to go (unless it is the one player who imo has made a laughing stock of the coaching staff).

It's way too early, if this story is true, to assign blame or motive to Spear moving. He may have personal reasons, i.e. family or distance to Texas, OR it could be lack of more playing time or negative coaching?

We saw him have some terrific games, but he had problems trying to decide between being a Center and a Forward. I thought he had a yet to be reached ceiling that could be good for the team. IF any other players leave, one could certainly assume that coaching is suspect.

137, who is the one player that you are talking about? BTW, I understand if you do not feel comfortable saying, but if that is the case, maybe the situation should not be brought up at all.

I was thinking of a player whose weight/conditioning made it impossible to contribute to the team. Weighed 45 pounds more this year than his senior year in HS. To me, that appears to be disrespectful of his teammates and his coaches.

B137-- are the numbers you listed for the last 3 years the count of the student-athletes who have actually transferred from one Division 1 school to any other level?

Or is it a count of the D1 athletes who have entered the transfer portal??

Can you clarify? It seems like a high number for just men's basketball.

It is NCAA stats of the actual number of transfers from D1 schools to any other school (D1, D2, D3, NAIA, Juco, etc). It does seem high - but that is just the reality of college basketball. I think there are a few issues: (a) most D1 scholarship players were HS and AAU stars and aren't happy not getting a lot of playing time at the next level; (2) a lot of guys struggle with the academics; (3) a lot of players
based their college decision solely on the coaches and the basketball program; and (4) too many disciplinary problems.

Here are some additional stats from that NCAA study, which was published in January 2020:

- Number of teams that had no transfers: 58 in 2019, 59 in 2018.

- Number of teams with one: 93, 94.

- Number of teams with two: 90, 78.

- Number of teams with three: 58, 55.

- Number of teams with four: 29, 43.

- Number of teams with five: 23, 22.

The above adds up to 351 schools. If you do the math, based on the above, you get the following numbers of transfers:

58 schools x 0 transfers = 0
93 x 1 = 93
90 x 2 = 180
58 x 3 = 174
29 x 4 = 116
23 x 5 = 115

TOTAL = 678 (for 351 schools)

This gets you close to the 694 figure that they say was the total for 2019 - but comes up slightly short. However there are 353 D1 schools, and the above only gives numbers for 351. So if the two missing ones had a total of 16 transfers, then we'd hit their number right on the nose.

Really wish Kahliel the best. Sorry to see him go and can only conjecture that if it was basketball related it most likely centered on playing time. Going small a lot at the end of the year might have impacted, but I certainly have no idea. Not sure where he is going at a D1 level where he’s going to get more time than he would have as a junior at Bucknell. If strictly a basketball related decision I don’t see his road to salvation. FT% a glaring issue from a coach’s perspective.

Thanks B137. Good details as always!

Now for a few stats re Spear: He averaged 5 points and 3 rebounds in about 14 minutes a game. Led the team in blocked shots (26) with that being less than 1 per game. With a limited sample of each, KS shot about the same from 3 as he did on FTs (37%).

If he wants to play in TX with a D1 school, how about Rice as a guess? Only guessing here.

To fill his void and minutes, here are a couple of Qs for the Board especially any insiders:

1) is there a view of the potential PT for Jake VDH? He is 6-8 and looked like he got stronger physically this past year. Potential for rotation minutes? I see some offensive skills.

2) what is the staff doing to monitor and improve Timmerman’s ability to contribute meaningful minutes? I will leave it at that.

Feedback welcome.

I doubt that Rice would be interested. One thought I had for him was Incarnate Word They had four players transfer out and don’t seem to have much size up front.

Spear has decided to transfer to Robert Morris. That decision seems to indicate that his decision to transfer had nothing to do with geography or family considerations.

Kahliel appears to be having some success at RMU. He started (due to an injury) and played 24 minutes; 6-8 for 13 points (1-3 FT's) against Purdue Fort Wayne. They play again this afternoon

Spear looks great tonight against Wright State. 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the first half. The blocks were particularly impressive.

Kahliel finished his first year with Robert Morris by scoring a career high 22 in a loss to Detroit Mercy. Spear finished with averages of 9.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg and far and away led the team with 23 blocks. Unfortunately his team didn’t have much success, going 4-15.
