Two possible northeastern conference changes:

1. A report has NJIT leaving the Atlantic Sun to join America East - a move that makes a lot of sense. A decade ago, all of the northeastern leagues rejected NJIT, which at the time was moving up from D2 but had horrendous facilities. Since then they have built a new 3500 seat basketball arena, added lacrosse as a sport, and built a new outdoor stadium for lax and soccer.

Most of America East's membership consists of fairly large public universities, so NJIT is a fit from that standpoint. And it also works geographically.

2. Various reports have Robert Morris looking to move to the Horizon League or possibly the MAAC. RMU has a really nice new arena, easily the best in the NEC, is not at all close to other NEC schools except for St. Francis, and outspends the rest of the league in basketball. Both the Horizon League and the MAAC would be upgrades in terms of quality, although travel cost would go up somewhat.

The big issue is what to do with football. The NEC refused to allow Monmouth to continue in the league for football when it moved its other sports to the MAAC, so it is unlikely they would let RMU stay for football only. Very unlikely the Patriot League would accept them due to academic issues, so they might be forced to follow Monmouth into the Big South. The other option would be to join the non-scholarship Pioneer League.

I didn't know much at all about the Pioneer League, including that it's nonscholarship. And wow, far-flung, too:
--Butler (IN)
--Davidson (NC)
--Dayton (OH)
--Drake (IA)
--Marist (NY)
--Morehead State (KY)
--Univ of San Diego
--Stetson (FL)
--Valpo (IN)

There's another theoretical course of action re football: What odds would you lay on Robert Morris ending it altogether?

It's official. NJIT to America East, RMU to the Horizon League for basketball etc, and RMU moves its football to the Big South.

Jacksonville University DROPPED football following the 2020 season. They had many good seasons but the cost of fielding a team was overwhelming its athletic budget.

Jacksonville back in 2015 had to forfeit five years of wins for blatant cheating. Seems they awarded "scholarship" money to football players in a non-scholarship league. Also went on league probation. Additionally they had to cut coaches, cut back on the number of rostered players, and get rid of the bogus financial aid.

The past two seasons they went 2-14 in league play, as the sanctions caught up to them.

Haha and damn it!! I almost replied that tCHC had been offered first, but turned it down again.

And now I become a pariah on crossports, though not yet, perhaps, as much as you.

Bryson Johnson was officially announced as an assistant coach by GMU on Monday. This is a bit strange since he has been called an assistant coach on the GMU site since mid-February (see last year's "Around the PL" thread). My assumption is that once he got the legal clearance in February, they gave him the title, but there was some budgetary rule that precluded him from officially having that role until the new fiscal year, which began July 1st. In any event, he apparently has been on the road recruiting for them all year.

I’d think recruiting is more difficult in this climate for a myriad of reasons. Going into so many households could be an issue.

It hasn't been an issue for the past few months since the NCAA has declared a special "quiet period". Coaches cannot visit recruits at their homes, schools, or at any competitions. Recruits can visit coaches on campus if they choose. Phone calls, texts, etc are still allowed.

For a school like Bucknell, which is not in an urban area and whose selling points are its great facilities and beautiful campus, the pandemic and the associated rules make things difficult.

The cancellation of all Bucknell camps hasn't helped either - especially for those sports who land a lot of recruits via the camps.

I just saw a little bit ago that Susquehanna and the Centennial conference has canceled all fall sports. The talk is that football may be in the spring.

SU is in the Centennial Conference for football only. For other sports they are in the Landmark Conference, which has said there will be fall sports "if it is safe."
