I am in the habit of scanning the "transactions" listed in the sports pages, and this morning I was surprised to note that the Chicago Bulls have hired our very own Max Rothschild as a player development coordinator.

Betley starts, scores nine points in Cal's season opening loss. Betley shot 50% from three point range, played 28 minutes as a starter and collected four boards, as well. The Golden Bears lost to Pac 12 rival Oregon State.

Good to see Ryan doing well. Hope he stays healthy.

Now, if only there were a way an Ivy could keep athletes such as him on campus for another year. I guess that could only work if these institutions offered more advanced degrees. Oh, well. I guess we can dream.

They aren't willing to have the graduate schools consider athletes as a different class of applicant

Okay, but what if an athlete meets the grad or professional school requirements? We'd keep some of our players for the compensatory year. The current rules do not allow this. If the individual doesn't get accepted to Wharton Grad, he or she can go to Northwestern or another school.

Fortunately for Ryan, that wasn't an option, or he might have been screwed out of getting to play this season.

I’m curious as to how online programs will impact this moving forward. Once it becomes less about “taking up a spot,” will the prohibition make less sense? Also, it’s unclear how online graduate programs from schools that do not have athletic programs would be considered. Much like FA, I suspect that non-athletic-driven, organic changes in education will lead to scenarios that will force revisiting some of our core athletic rules and regs.
