The University is seeing worrisome trends in the positivity rate of COVID-19 in our undergraduate student population this week. This situation is concerning amidst the emergence of highly transmissible variants in nearby communities.
It is critical that students only gather with their pod while watching the Super Bowl or when doing any other activities. Do not gather with people outside of your pod.
We have been sending students home for conduct not in line with the Student Campus Compact, and will continue to do so throughout the semester.
Remain vigilant—mask up, maintain a safe distance, wash your hands. Don’t be the weakest link; if trends don’t reverse, we will move into Campus Alert Level 3–a campus-wide Safer at Home order—imposing new restrictions as early as next week.

Good for Penn....but it just goes to show that we should have put together a bubble at Cornell. These guys would have played and stayed in school.

Just for some context, the citywide positivity rate dropped a half pct point that week but remained over 6%. I'd be interested in the more recent data given the spikes in some of other Philly schools like 'Nova had.

I suspect that they are not in school so they can retain a 4th year of eligibility (instead of graduating in 4 years) because of the asinine Ivy League policy against grad students being able to play. Knowing the caliber of student that we have, I also suspect that they are each doing something meaningful to them, i.e. not just sitting on their butts.
As for Michael Wang, he may be safer in China than here in the United States.

Just wanted to point out this is great news from a Penn basketball perspective. They get the extra year of eligibility regardless of whether they are in school this year. Taking the semester or year off significantly increases the chances we get three more seasons of each at Penn (rather than two seasons at Penn and then a grad transfer).
