One of the oft repeated grievances against our coach has been his indifference to outreach to the alumni base, especially as compared to football and baseball. Is that about to change? I saw the newsletter on the 10, yes 10, newcomers to the program and was actually impressed by the effort that went into it.

Al Bagnoli is a gentleman with one of the great records in Ivy history. But at Columbia, despite 3 Top 25 FCS recruiting classes, his Ivy record at Columbia is
2015- 1-6
2016- 2-5
2017- 5-2 (2nd)
2018- 3-4
2019- 2-5 (last place)
So I don't see what you're trying to say about the basketball coach, who in my opinion had teams that could have won the Ivies had it not been for critical injuries. You are so extremely critical of a guy who inherited a basket case program, and won more huge Ivy games with undermanned teams than Bagnoli ever did.

While Engles certainly has dealt with injuries, I’m not sure how much of a basket case program he took over. Columbia was coming off a 25 win season (10-4, 3rd in the Ivies) when he came in. Basically, Columbia’s average wins per season have cut in half going from Smith to Engles. May be some bad luck, for sure, but after 4 years the results may just be the results.

The three top players on that last Kyle Smith team, Lo, Mullins and Rosie, all graduated that same year that Smith left..

Correct, he inherited a virtually empty program.

Re Al’s record, in the 2019 season, before we got hit with the injury bug we almost beat Princeton and gave Penn its worst loss in years, a total blowout. Al’s last two teams were decimated with injuries to starters; had we stayed healthy I’m sure we would have seen more wins. As far as basketball, when Smith left the cupboard was completely bare.

Seems to me that we are beating a dead horse in the continuing discussion regarding who is responsible for Jim Engles's disappointing won-loss record at Columbia. Obviously the Columbia Administration has decided that Engles is good enough to continue to lead the program so he has my support as a loyal soldier. Having said that, I do believe that the newcomers are quite promising so Engles does have a chance to improve his record in the upcoming season.

Seemed like a great hire at the time. But like with Penn for both Miller and Jerome, at some point you have to win some games. There are lots of reasonable explanations. But I think this has to be a put up or shut up year for Engles. Even if it is bad luck, you can’t just keep going backwards and expect to keep your job. They need to be better this year.

BUT ENGLES HAS LOWERED OUR EXPECTATIONS BY PUBLICLY STATING THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE THEI MOST INEXPERIENCED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY, OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT. On paper we have some talented guys and some really good newcomers, so I hope that he is just being cautious.

As always, my expectation is that Columbia Men's Basketball Team will have at least a winning season. The talent is there. No more excuses, please.
