After beating up on a number of cupcakes, the Big Red have a big test tomorrow against Va. Tech in Blacksburg. Obviously plenty of ACC-level talent on the Hokies, but if Cornell hits a reasonable percentage of 3’s they’ll have a puncher’s chance.

VaTech and Cornell hosted St. Francis (PA) in back to back to back games last month. The Hokies won 85-55 and Cornell won 93-80, but both were 20-ish point games with 15 minutes to go.

Cornell looked pretty good against Penn State, but VaTech looks to be a step up in class. Interested to see how the Big Red match-up.

Loved the way that Earl's team came out of the shoot playing at a very fast tempo with no fear. Cornell will probably lose but the team looks much improved -- talent level appears to be a significantly higher level and Earl looks like that he has command of the team.

Cornell may well be a factor this year based on how most other IL teams have been playing.

Shooting has cooled off and the game is getting out of reach. A little disappointed it is not closer, but VaTech is pretty good.

Only wish we had 6 traditional Ivy weekends instead of only 3.

I’m a convert. Cornell will win Ivy games this year.

Observations on Boothby vs Va Tech are somewhat unfair due to the athleticism of the opponent. At this point in his career, Boothby is pretty much limited to catch and shoot from 3 point range. He was 2-3 vs Va Tech, and is now the second ranked 3pt shooter nationally at 57.45% (27-47). He had 1 rebound and 1 assist in 21 minutes vs Va Tech and only shot 3's.

At this point in his career Boothy reminds me of Harvard's Laurent Rivard. Boothby has taken 51 shots, 47 of them 3's. In Rivard's Junior (199 of 216) and Senior (186 of 210), Laurent tended to only take 3's but for transition baskets if I recall correctly. Rivard appears to have developed into a better athlete, but was an inch or two shorter than the 6'7" Boothby.

Maybe an even better comparison is Penn's Sam Jones (2014 - 2018). Like Rivard, Jones didn't shoot 3's almost exclusively until his Junior season. As a Junior, Jones attempted 65 3's out of 71 shots and as a senior 42 of 43. Jones played 20 minutes per game his first two seasons, similar to Boothby, but his usage dropped to 10 mpg as a junior and 4 mpg as a senior. Rivard was more versatile and thus played more minutes (25mpg to 34 mpg).

Boothby, in a small sample, is shooting 57.5% on 3's while Rivard was at 41% career and Jones 37.5%.
