After a long holiday break (made longer thanks to Howard's COVID problems), Yale takes on its second team with the Gaels as their mascot in three games.

Saint Mary's is yet another big and long team, and their defense denies the three really well, so this is shaping up to be another tough match-up for the Bulldogs.

I saw in Yale Athletics' game write-up that according to the NCAA, Yale has played the 95th toughest schedule in the country, and that the second-toughest schedule in the Ivy belongs to Brown at 165th. Honestly, I think this explains a lot about Yale's early struggles - it's tough for a young team to go through the wringer like Yale has had to do. Hopefully it pays off for them in league play.

Not sure where that strength of schedule thing comes from. Penn appears to have played the toughest schedule by any conceivable measure, and the NCAAs “quad” numbers show Penn with twice as many quad 1 games as Yale (4-2), the same number of quad 2 games (3-3), and fewer quad 4 games. Not sure how you can add that up and come up with Yale as having a tougher schedule (let alone ranking Penn somewhere behind the listed ranking for Brown).

Kenpom has Penn with the toughest, followed by Dartmouth. Then Brown and Yale well behind.

That’s not to say Yale hasn’t played a tough schedule — they have. It will be interesting to see how some of the teams that have really been tested but have lost a lot fair, and how a team like Cornell that hasn’t been tested much but as won a lot does.

A YDN article about the postponed game with Columbia included a part where Jalen Gabbidon said the team had no positive cases all season at the time Howard canceled the 12/23 game.

After the 12/28 St. Mary’s game, the Gaels postponed its 12/31 game (vs USF) due to its covid cases. Then, Yale had to postpone the Columbia game due to its covid cases.

I wonder if the trip had any effect on Yale’s positive cases?
