Wow, Truly shocking. Good for him to get out while he is young though if that is what he wants. There will obviously be some high paying tv gig(s) for him.

If the Sixers flame out again they will be hot on his trail.

Definitely. He may have an offer already.

It indeed is shocking.

There almost certainly will be a story behind this. I look forward to learning what it is.

In addition to being a long suffering Penn fan, I'm a much longer-suffering Fordham fan (thanks to two Fordham parents, and a Fordham MBA for myself). The fact that Kyle Neptune is ditching Fordham after a one year to go back and replace him is really disappointing, because Fordham started to FINALLY look like it was moving in the right direction. Ugh

And of course, like St. Peter's, anyone he recruited who is good will be in the transfer portal today.

All right--for those of you who, like me, don't believe a 60 year old coach in his prime is retiring for real, let me handicap the Jay Wright Open with the P38 odds on what really is happening here:

(a) He's telling the truth and really retiring to fund raise for Nova and spend more time with his family:
30-1

(b) He has an undisclosed health issue that he needs to deal with (hope this is not the case): 25-1

(c) He wants out from the dog eat dog world of college recruiting and has a strong broadcasting offer: 20-1

(d) He's next in line to take over from Coach K at USA Basketball and wants to put all his energies into that position: 15-1

(e) He has an offer he cannot refuse at a top college job, where a legacy coach is about to step down (e.g., Kansas): 10-1

(f) Ladies and Gents, your Next Coach of the Philadelphia 76ers: 1-1

I would also point out that this weekend is an NCAA live recruiting period so the timing of his retirement means he doesn't have to travel to 5 cities in 4 days to watch recruits this weekend.

Being an elite college basketball coach is a much, much worse job than it used to be. A lot of your players will be gone after a year or two, and you have to constantly recruit the other ones to not transfer. So you're teaching new guys the same basics almost every year, with very little chance of seeing them advance to learn more sophisticated stuff. In addition to being a grind, this just can't be as rewarding. (This is a big reason why Ivy League basketball has to be a lot better for the coaches).

I'd bet on another option: he says he's burnt out and wants to do TV for a year or two, biding his time for the best NBA job to open up.

I agree that the NBA is the most likely, and I don't think Doc is long for the Sixers no matter what

Jay Wright to the NBA??

He is reported to have said that he could never coach those guys for 82 games.

Something has to explain this sudden move---it's totally out of character for a guy like Wright to just suddenly retire in the heart of recruiting season with no victory lap year. He said that before---that doesn't mean he still feels that way with perhaps a $40 million offer dangling from the NBA.

Hey--this way he'll get to coach many of the same players he had for just one year (and plenty of others he tried to recruit). Some are even still college age.

I'm not sure it was so sudden. The speed with which they landed a replacement and gave him a new title tells me this has been in the works for a while and kept secret.

Disagree. They got a guy who would have given up at least one testicle to get the Nova job. I think this happened very fast. If he had known that this was his last run, he would have been celebrated. Certainly that would be the case if he actually were "retiring", something I don't believe for a minute is happening.

Actually, I thought of including that as a high odds possibility, but thought it would bring out harsh comments, so didn't.

But of course, that is a possibility.

I suspect that, like Dick Vermeil retiring from his Eagles head coaching job in January 1983, Jay Wright might just be getting burned out and needs to step away from coaching for now. After some time away, he very well might get the urge to come back and coach again. But I do not believe that any such plan is in the works now.

I hope Wright's public statement is the real story.
It would be great to see someone leave "too early"
in the eyes of his fans as opposed to too late in the eyes of his critics.
He had a great run, and I hope the cynics are wrong.

I’m wondering if he’ll pull a Billy Donovan and decide to go back to Villanova in the next couple of days.

Parcells retired 3 times. His health had something to do with it.

The fact that Neptune was groomed for the job and Wright knowing this past year was top cycle makes me think this was planned as something he would decide at the end of the season. I think Otto has the right idea here.

Good piece in the Inky today concerning Wright’s motivation. It is, in part, because he sees the writing on the wall and had all but made up his mind at the end of the season:

“The future of college basketball, though — in the era of the transfer portal, of name, image, and likeness (NIL), of alumni and boosters pooling money to form collectives to pay athletes endorsement dollars for sponsorships and public appearances — promised to jeopardize the smooth efficiency of Wright’s formula.”

That possibility raises a question as to how much he would have to adapt his style to the NBA. Not really a great fit as is.

looking forward to being able to cite Jay as someone who is "available" that would be an upgrade over Donahue. People always absurdly insisting on names, now i have one*

There is a certain degree of logic to this---if Wright's complaint is with the transfer portal/one and done's effect on student athletes actually being part of the school, then the Ivies are a perfect place for him.

Yeah, unbelievable as this may sound, I actually think he's underrated--making Villanova into a consistent national power is not as easy as either their fans or others think. It can't possibly get any better over the next few years, and it could get much worse.

Jay Wright all but confirming what I thought: he wants to take some time off, then look at NBA jobs.

That was the P38 Fave, and if Doc blows the 3-0 lead, we'll probably see Jay Wright say, WTF, let's go for it now!
