With the news of Rhodes and Newton entering the crowded transfer portal this week, do we now have 2 or 3 spots to fill for next year’s squad?
Seems to me to be too late to get good incoming freshmen!
So open the door to the portal, do some sound research and background checks, and bring in a couple of rotation players. We could use an athletic wing player or two or a point guard with some flash and dash skills. And focus on defensive skills please!
Anyone have insights on where we are fishing for players?? Hopefully the staff has already been digging in the portal for possible additions.

Scholarship slots for this coming year? 05-04-22 05:28 PM - Post#341124

The Bison rostered 11 scholarship players this season: Screen, Timmerman, Rhodes, VDH, Newton, Motta, Funk, Rice, Edmonds, Adoh, and Bascoe. Back in March of 2021, all 13 scholarships were committed - but then Latimer, Turner, and Ellis all transferred out. The staff then added a forward, Brock Newton, who was late in his 5th year of HS yet had no offers. Overall result was 11 scholarship players.
With Funk graduating, plus the transfers of Rhodes and Newton, that brings the number down to 8. Add in incoming frosh Josh Fulton and Brady Muller, plus tranfer (from St. Joes) Jack Forrest, and there are now 11 scholarships committed - leaving room for two more players.
You are correct that there are very few available seniors, especially ones who have PL academics and D1 skill. ND has three times in the spring given out scholarships to seniors with no real offers. It hasn't worked yet.
So that leaves possible transfers. Remember that May 1st was the last date for a player to enter the portal and have instant eligibility, so we won't see any new candidates. Since Bucknell may have thought there were no open spots until a week ago, they may not have been working the transfer portal at all. (That depends on whether they had advance notice of Newton and/or Rhodes leaving.) Many of those in the portal have been talking to coaches and making visits for the last month or more. In any event, it won't be easy for a bad program with a bad coach to land any skilled players at this late date. Matt Langel or Brett Reid might do it, but I have little confidence in this staff.

Please give the staff a chance. The transfer portal as a possible source probably wasn't even considered until the AD affirmed its possible use in the past week or so.
BTW, I have a bridge for sale that leads to beachfront property in New Mexico.

If the staff did not have advance knowledge of Newton and Rhodes filing to transfer, and if we have not been actively working the portal, then shame on us after a last place season. If you’re not happy and plan to leave, why wait until the end of April? Unless you’re researching level of interest from other schools…. With proper exit interviews at the end of the season 7 weeks ago, the communications should have been cleared up both ways.
Losing more players, especially rotation players like Rhodes, is disappointing but even more so if it happens at the very end of the portal period (end of April) and you are not prepared to fill the spots. Perhaps with better or better fit players!
The portal door (incoming door!) has been opened with the Jack Forrest signing. Let’s be smart and aggressive and get another commitment or two. Lobby the administration if you need to. Not a time to sit still. Hope is not a strategy!

You raise an interesting question. If Rhodes and/or Newton knew they wanted to transfer, why did they wait so long to enter the portal? Under NCAA rules, they are not allowed to contact any other schools/coaches without being in the portal, so not registering as early as possible makes it harder to find a spot.
And if they only figured it out this late in the process, what changed to make them want to leave?

Probably they were not happy with the proposed facilities improvements. About that NM beachfront property…

That should have been clear by late March.

Who is coaching?
Is that the same as who has the title?

A better question might be: Is anybody coaching?
