Son of former Sixers coach, Brett Brown.
We have many fans of the Lower Merion Aces on this board. Will Sam Brown be a contributor or merely an AI filler?

Never seen him play so I can't offer any opinion.

This is from an alum who follows lm hoops
He can shoot. Very streaky though. Otherwise he's good but not great. I don't know if he's good enough to really be a starter at Penn. We'll see.

I have also spoken with an alum who follows Lower Merion Hoops.
This alum says that Brown is a left-handed equivalent to another recent Lower Merion grad, Jack Forrest, who went to Columbia, and has since transferred to St. Joseph's and now to Bucknell.

I’ve seen him once. He’s crafty, nice stroke. Very skinny and will need to improve his D

From what I can see he goes very well to his left and will need to develop an ability to go equally well to his right. The only jr year stats I found were for the 1st 4 games where he averaged 25 points per game, shot 16 of 19 from two and 19 of 37 from 3.
Kind of reminds me of Danny Ainge ( not saying he’s the second coming of Danny Ainge)

Here are some stats I found in an article:
https://papreplive.com/2022/04/12/presenting -2022-...
Sam Brown, Lower Merion – Junior guard, a first team All-Central League pick, averaged 15.8 ppg, and was a productive 3-point shooter, hitting 66 treys (40 percent of his attempts). Averaged 3.3 rebounds per game and converted 77.8 percent of his free throws.

I'll take Ainge. LOL. I think this kid will likely need to fill out but should be a nice bench role player in a few years.

Nice article from Josh on the commitment:
https://www.cityofbasketballlove.com/news_article/...
I’ll cut somewhat against type and say that I think this is a more significant commitment than some folks are giving it credit for. Donahue’s stated and implicit goal of getting more local players has not totally panned out and I think this is a nice addition of a player who has/had a shot at getting bigger offers this summer.

If he is another Ainge he can also play on the baseball team.

Hopefully he is a sneaky good player like Betley was (as a recruit).

I passed some judgment about Sam Brown from watching a single video on YouTube. Brown looked skinny and soft but with a pretty good shot. What I didn't realize was that this was a Freshman year video. Even from that time to his sophomore year and now this season he looks like a completely different player. I won't say that he's a sure thing, but I his skills will translate very well at the next level. He has a good shot and an ability to create his shot with crossovers and step-backs. He also has a very aggressive moves to the hoop, and he extends his body to bypass his defender (like AJ used to do). He gets from the 3 point line to the hoop very quickly. In that way, he reminds me of Andy Toole - both could get downhill very quickly.
Even as a Freshman, it appears that he started for a very good team. He looked very composed and intelligent as a player. He did not stand out physically, but held his own reasonably. In his sophomore and junior year video, he looks like a key player.
I'm going to join Besnoah with a favorable outlook on Sam Brown.

If your comparison with Toole is accurate, it's a great signing. Toole turned a losing team with no direction into an instant 2-year Ivy winner. I will hope, and agree that watching video often is inaccurate for many reasons in predicting the quality of a recruit.

i think videos are useless. I'm optimistic based solely on him doing well on a solid squad.

FWIW, he is a starter on an EYBL team and has shot 37% on the circuit from 3pt so far against HM competition in 2 events. Looks like his role on that team is 3 and D.

that's interesting, I had gotten the impression from josh's article that he was a bench piece but I realized it doesn't say that, it just says his PPG.

Looks like he is a starter but he is a 12-15m a game guy (games are usually 30m I believe). Could be a bench guy, from reviewing the stat pages it looks like he starts but no way to know exactly without seeing the games. They have 4 guys who average 20+ minutes and 2-3 others at about the same minutes as Sam (12-15)

According to the fine folks at cityofbasketballlove.com Sam Brown is now "sidelined with a broken foot."

I haven't been on the board in a while, but saw this thread and wanted to comment: I think Sam Brown is terrific. Has gotten SO much better between freshman and junior year. I have high expectations for him in a Quakers uniform. Tough, good handle, really good shooter, did I mention tough? You guys will really like his mindset/mentality and I think his skills will translate.

I'm getting the impression he's tough. That's good. Some of Penn's best players over the decades have been so described.
