Well, my prediction that Penn’s favorable late-season schedule would give them the edge in the league finally did—just barely—come true, as Columbia was unable to get the job done against Dartmouth. That being said, I’m glad that we got the home-team advantage in this series, as I think we’re going to need every edge we can get; this is a very even matchup. Looking at the final stats in league play, the Lions wound up with the better offense; their OPS is a whopping 1.011, a full point beyond Penn’s .907, and they hit thirty-five homers to Penn’s twenty-seven; their overall slugging percentage of .511 is 17th in the country. On the other hand. Penn’s pitching ran up a 3.51 ERA, which is quite good by college standards (their overall mark of 4.04 puts them in 25th place in the country) and is over 1.5 runs better than Columbia’s 5.09. I don’t believe the old saw that pitching wins short series, so I won’t pretend that I do, but we do have two solid aces scheduled to start for us (Kevin Eaise and Joe Miller), whereas right now Columbia is starting JD Ogden for game 1, who did pitch well against us in relief but has only started a couple of games this year, and Joe Sheets, whose ERA is 5.13 in league play. Once we get into the bullpen, it’s kind of a crapshoot for both teams, although we do have Owen Coady, who has often ended up giving us long stretches of effective pitching in the third game each weekend. Looking at the lineup, Columbia is pretty intimidating; they have three guys who hit 10 HR’s or more in league play, and almost everyone has some power. Our offense has got to go into each game looking for a minimum of eight runs, and 10 or more would be better, particularly given how hot it’s going to be. They need to stay patient and not give the Lions any easy outs. If Eaise and Miller can both get a good number of innings, that would limit the exposure our bullpen has and make it less likely that Columbia can come back in the late innings. It’s going to be a good one, and I hope that many of you can either make it to the game or watch online. If you do come, make sure to stay cool, as the temperatures and humidity are going to make it feel like it's 100 degrees out there. Let’s go, Penn!

Single, 2 Bb and a sac fly in the 2nd, and Penn leads 2-0. Got to get crooked numbers, though.

To be fair, the ball was hit to proverbial "no man's land."

Would have been a hell of a catch if the Columbia shortstop had hauled it in. But.... he didn't.

Columbia gambled twice with their pitching yesterday; first, they started JD Ogden, who had been in the bullpen for most of the season. When that didn't work, they threw Joe Sheets, who was supposed to start Game 2, into the breach, but that didn't work either. They ended up throwing him to the wolves and only used one more pitcher, so at least they didn't blow up the bullpen too much, but they've only got one guy left who has both started a lot and is good, which is Andy Leon. It'll be interesting to see if they put him in there, in which case who the heck is going to start Game 3 if needed, or whether they'll use somebody else and hope the offense can break out against Joe Miller for Penn. Game 2 starts at noon.

Columbia throws our runner out at the plate to end the 8th, then strands two more runners in the 9th. Final Columbia 4-2. If they lose the third game, they're going to regret all the opportunities to score they wasted in this one. Unfortunately, our third starter is not as good as the first two. Let's hope things go like the first time we played them.

Well, I have to give Boretti, Columbia's coach, credit, in that he gambled on Higgins, who had a good game 2, and having done that, he then had the better starter in Game 3, who induced a lot of fly balls that weren't quite hard enough to get out of the park and that the Columbia outfielders could run down. That said, while Penn definitely improved this season in terms of their patience at the plate, in Game 2 they squandered a whole lot of chances swinging early in the count, and also on questionable tactical choices (the play where Polo got picked off in the seventh being the perfect example.) Sometimes you got to stop thinking and let the team hit, and Yurkow still has to commit to sound offense. What makes this really frustrating is that we had the at least slight favorites in 2020, so you figure with the core of this team we would have had two cracks at it, but the league had to be stupid. Well, now I know how the Vikings fans felt after they had the Minneapolis Miracle and then got wasted by the Eagles the next week. Very frustrating end to the season.
