Good remembrance from John Feinstein here. It's hard to process one's feelings about the end of an institution-defining career and life.

When he retired from coaching at Princeton, I found some email address and wrote him a message of appreciation. Unsurprisingly, I didn't hear back and have no reason to believe it was even read, but I'd like to think he knew what the meant to a lot of fans and admirers.

This appreciation from the hated rivals is good, too:

Agreed. I appreciate all the links being posted. So much about his life that I didn't know. He was one of a kind.

A complicated man. Great, innovative coach and independent
thinker. He had a lot to offer.
He was also unnecessarily mean to guys who played for him
and used language and tactics that would not be tolerated today,
which is a good thing.
He left a big mark on his world, and we should remember
what was great about him. But the bullying aspect is a part of his legacy too, and we should not shy away from acknowledging that.

"The Smart Take From the Strong" is one of my favorite books. Regarding the "bullying" - I think Carril deserves credit for recognizing that his interpersonal style was becoming outdated, and stepping away when he did. He lived over 25 years after he left head coaching and worked as a coach for 15 of them, so he could have hung on longer as a coach.

He must have adapted somewhat during his long NBA stint.
