Opening night results:

1. Loyola lost at DePaul by six points. Loyola is an experienced team, with three players back for a fifth year. For some reason, neither of the 6-10 Ilic twins played. Both were significant contributors last year as frosh.

2. Colgate lost 88-87 at Buffalo. Fifth year Tucker Richardson, the preseason POY, got 23 points, and their highly touted freshman guard from Washington state, Braedan Smith, had 20 points. Their two big men, Records and Woodward, both got in foul trouble, which may well have cost them the game.

3. Holy Cross lost by seven points at home to Siena. Their strong fifth year PF, Gerrale Gates, had 25 points. HC trailed by double digits for most of the first half but made it a close game for most of the second half. HC's freshman PG, Will Batchelder, played a quiet 29 minutes. Their transfer from Air Force, Joe Octave, had 16 points but was 3-9 on FTs.

4. Boston U beat Northeastern 72-63. Sixth year SF Walter Whyte had 27 points and 13 boards. If he stays healthy, he is one of the two strongest candidates for POY.

5. Army beat Keystone College, a D3 from Christy Mathewson's home town near Scranton, 110-65. That matchup makes even less sense than playing Lebanon Valley. Army used about 20 players and almost all of them scored.

6. Navy won at William and Mary 75-59, pulling away midway through the second half. I fear this is going to be Dane's final year as their coach. Meanwhile, Ed DeChellis continues to roll in new players in quantity and keeps winning. Good coach.

7. Lehigh lost at Syracuse 90-72. Evan Taylor, who is one of the PL's top players, had 20 points. This Syracuse team is probably not as good as traditional Orange teams.

8. Lafayette lost 67-54 at Miami after leading at the half. They started a freshman PF, Josh Rivera, and played their two transfers a lot: center Justin Van der Baan, a 7-footer from Boston College, and TJ Berger, a 6-4 guard who played for Georgetown and San Diego. His dad is the coach at Westtown School, a strong basketball program outside of Philly. CJ Fulton, a SG from Northern Ireland who made PL all-rookie team last year, led LC with 17 points.

Thanks for the recap. It's crazy how long we've been hearing the name Walter Whyte.

It sure is. This is his fifth year of actual play, plus he missed an entire season with a knee injury, although it wasn’t that major of an injury and I believe he practiced part of the time.

Oliver Lynch-Daniels was listed as a starter in the Game Notes for Colgate at Buffalo but did not play. Woodward entered the starting lineup for him. Interesting look with him and Records out there. Both are fantastic but I think this team functions better with one or the other. You want four guys who can shoot the 3 in Langel's system.

I think Lynch-Daniels would have made a difference on a night where the Raiders committed 19 turnovers. They needed another ball-handler out there.

Still scored 87 on 54 percent shooting. Only 5 3's which was interesting.

Smith is incredible. Plain and simple. I like Chandler Baker too, the transfer wing.

Defense left a lot to be desired at times but to be honest...I think UB is pretty damn good. I'm willing to bet they finish better than 6th in the MAC as the preseason poll suggested.

I see Colgate is at it again - up 44-30 at Syracuse at the half. Is it possible they can pull this off two years in a row?

How about Tucker Richardson shooting 7 for 11 from deep and finishing with 27! Very impressive.

BTW, the highlights of Cogate @ Syracuse must make 'Cuse fans sick. They played terrible D.

Three days after they beat Syracuse handily, Colgate loses to Duquesne. Go figure.

The loss to Marist looks a little less bad tonight. They took Boston down to the wire before losing 72-70.

Boston U has been playing poorly most of the season, which is amazing considering their experience. Their top five consists of one 6th year player (Walter Whyte), two 5th year players, and two 4th year players. Right now Pomeroy ranks them behind the Bison.

Lehigh actually led at the half before losing by 22.

Had a five point lead with 14 minutes left. Then Wisconsin went on a 29–6 run, and then further extended the lead. Lehigh hit a late three to cut the final margin from 25 to 22. The betting line was 22.5. Might make Scott van Pelt’s “bad beats” segment this week.

Somehow Lafayette, who was 1-11 going into last nights game, beat LaSalle by 25 90-65. Shooting 58% from 3 and 61.5% overall will do that.

Watching Lehigh/Boston University and keep thinking to myself, “Geez, these are the teams that are beating us?”

Lehigh-Boston one of the ugliest NCAA basketball games I’ve ever attended. Stripes seemed to be paid based on the number of fouls called. (57 total foul shots). And we (LU) couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn door. Neither could BU.

Yet somehow, Lehigh is 8-2. Didn't see that coming. Or Boston going 3-7.

Lehigh 8-2 and a surprise? Not to my eyes when I watched them totally beat down Bucknell earlier this season.

That Lehigh 3 guard offense is something special. IMHO, those three guys are all a level above anybody on the entire Bucknell team!

That is, they can shoot from anywhere and score with great athleticism, far above the ability of just about every single member of the current Bucknell roster. Result? Bucknell in last place and Lehigh at the top, a tribute to the recruiting ability of the Lehigh coaching staff.

If you recruit great athletes in basketball, then your coaching duties are easier, an obvious conclusion that Bucknell has presently forgotten, apparently.

Lafayette today put first-year head coach Mike Jordan on a paid leave of absence and have initiated an invesigation into unspecified complaint(s).

"From Lafayette… “Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Jordan will be on paid leave of absence while Lafayette investigates a complaint it has received about his work as head coach. While investigation is conducted, Associate Head Coach Mike McGarvey will serve as acting head coach.”
