The Bears are up 31-30 at halftime. Playing good defense and shooting 50% from the field (11-22). The lead would be larger if not for 11 TO’s.

Brown will wish they had this one back. Their outstanding defense had them within two possessions late but their 2nd half offense was the worst in a few seasons. They could barely get the ball within the two point zone, and had no offensive urgency. Even late they were letting the shot clock get down to single digits. Northwestern’s defense was outstanding but Brown did nothing right. Feel badly for Wojcik to return to Chicago with a game like that. He was the one guy who got a few open shots in the 2nd and missed each one until it didn’t matter anymore. Great first half though against a very good Northwestern team and a tight defense throughout.

Need to make some FTs and reduce the TOs. If we can do that, we can be a contender in the league.

The turnovers were an issue, but not unexpected given that we were taking on one of the better defensive teams in the country. The free throws continue to be a huge issue - we finish our non-conference slate as the worst free throw shooting team in the country, one of only seven teams making less than 60% of our free throws.

One of the best defenses in college basketball turned up the pressure in second half and held Brown to 35% on 8 of 23. The Bears held NW to 34.5% for the game and fought them hard. Once again the Bears shot themselves in the foot from the free throw line, going 11-22 for 50% while NW hit 19-21, and won the game by 5 points. The Bears did have 17 assists on their 19 hoops.
Ivy play starts next Monday against Penn at the Pitz. The Bears have played well enough to have a shot at the Ivy Tourney. But my sense is that their continued poor FT shooting will cost them a spot. I hope I’m wrong.

They can’t lose if other teams can’t score. Brown’s OOC strengths don’t always translate to conference strengths. But I think this is a very good defensive team. (I’m not exactly sure why; this team has no outstanding individual defenders, shot-blockers or incredible athletes. But something in the team defense is really working).

Of course they can’t win if they can’t score.

I think Martin and his staff has taught this group how to handle switching off when screened, constantly moving their feet, stying active, and fighting to stay between their man and the basket. Everyone has bought in to this collective effort that is fun to watch and obviously difficult to play against. Hopefully it is equally effective in league play.

Brown’s a top 2-3 defense in this league. But they’re well-below average offense. I’d probably take a great D with an O that can heat up and give that a shot vs. Penn and Cornell. They’re the two vulnerable ones because they don’t defend.

Penn didn’t defend well against quick high major and mid-major guards you don’t see in our league. I think Penn will defend very well at this level

If Penn can manage to sustain the sort of defensive intensity against Ivy opponents that they hit Temple with in the second half of that game, they'll be in good shape.
