I finally got a chance to take a peek. She looks pretty good. Those offers came after her sophomore season. She missed extensive time last year with a hip injury but returned just in time for the state tournament.
Evidently she’s had at least 10 offers including Penn and Columbia from the Ivy League.

Hi CM,
I fully agree that until one sees a recruit receive meaningful on court minutes and produce, one really does not know how a recruit’s game will translate to and develop at the college level. So much to learn, especially defense, and at what pace does a recruit grow as a player and person.
I am excited by Penn’s incoming freshman class – but why is this year different than any other year. Tracking their HS careers and the video that is available, I believe this class complements the current roster, and is a class that can be built around for the next four year cycle.
In Mataya Gayle (GA state champion and Miss Georgia basketball) and Ese Ogbevire, Penn has two recruits who are more in the style of traditional point guards – something Penn has not had since Grasela in 19/20. I have a strong bias for traditional point guards (all Penn’s recent championship teams Men or Women have been strong at PG) – but too your point, how long before they are effective being the on-ball defender from baseline to baseline and running the offensive scheme.
With Abby Sharpe, Penn has a two-time first team PA 6A recruit who also has won a PA state title. COBL write ups have been very positive and with Simone and Stina at the 3, Abby has time to develop into her role.
In Tina Njike - a 6-3 2023 center and Tobi Ademuwagun - a 5-11 wing, Penn adds physicality. But with Jordan and Floor the likely starters, both have time to develop. And then in the 24 class there is size in 3 & 4 slots with Reagan Jamison 6-1 Guard, Gabrella Kelly 6-2 Forward & Katie Collins 6-2 Forward. That should be a nice future rotation of bigs

Well, recent history would indicate that starters will pay 35+ mpg and minutes for the young players will be limited to 1 or 2. The roster had plenty of size last year that never saw the floor. In fact, we have no idea how good many of the sophomores or juniors are since they have never played realistic minutes. For those of us who watched last year's Red/Blue game, Isabel Gomez showed real flashes of being a solid PG, but, again, she never played so we have no idea.
Also, word out of Philly is that one of the incoming freshman tore her ACL this summer so that's at least one 2023 who won't contribute.

Part of my excitement for the season is that we should see a lot of new faces this season.
With Padilla (36 mpg) and McGurk (31 mpg) graduating there are a lot of minutes to be earned in the backcourt – preseason and the early season hopefully will be very competitive as players look to earn opportunities. Plus with the depth and talent at guard, there hopefully will be more instances to have intense defensive pressure in the backcourt while rotating players to keep them fresh.
At the wing there are options in each class – some more spot up three point shooters other that like to drive to the basket. Likely will be who is “hot” from range that night, and that game's match up.
Floor (30 mpg) & Jordan (32 mpg) as senior captains undoubtedly will see the majority of the time at the 4 & 5. To your point, there are openings for 15-20 mpg in the frontcourt for newer players as Sike and Faye have graduated.
Unless you are a prolific scorer, the one key item to get on the floor for Penn is the ability to play defense. Being yearly a top 10 in points allowed is not an accident – therefore, neither is who gets on the court.
Likely will post thoughts on the league when all the teams officially report their classes. But to ground my expectations: I believe Penn is a post season caliber team – both for Ivy Madness and the WNIT. There is a lot that has to jell for any of the four top teams (CHPP) over the course of the season and especially two days in March to make the NCAAs. I believe a realistic benchmark for this team (and any of the top four teams) as the season plays out is how competitive they are for a WBIT spot (likely need to be a top 95 team – so a 20 NET ranking improvement for Penn over 2022/23).

I believe Penn will struggle to make Ivy Tournament next year and the lack of developing younger players will bite them hard. They ended the season playing very poorly last year and lost one of the best players in program history to boot. Depending on players who have never played real college minutes to help the team is a perilous prospect.
Meanwhile, Yale returns basically its entire roster, Columbia and Harvard did very well in the transfer portal, and Princeton is Princeton.

In my league preseason rankings Yale is fifth. And they do return everyone, but Elles van der Maas. Great backcourt with Clark and McGill. Hopefully Lesmond are Grubman are recovered from their injuries and they could contribute to improving off a 13-14, 7-7 season. The squad is only 13 deep. So there could be some rotation issues (more so if we still palyed back-to back). For me the area to watch for Yale is the front court. Who is the defensive presence under the basket that supports all the other players and matches up against the opposition’s big. Yale ended the season 80 NET raking points behind Penn. Could they make that up, perhaps. And the season series between Columbia, Penn & Yale will likely decide 3-4-5. Brown is the wildcard. For Penn it will be how do they replace the 30 ppg from Kayla, Mandy and Sydnei. But these are the fun way before preseason debates – before we see who has elevated their game over the summer.

The fact Penn will enter the season with no returning PG experience is a huge red flag. It's the hardest position for a young player to jump into, yet arguably the most important. Princeton, Columbia, Brown, Harvard, Yale all return their starting PGs, giving each a leg up.

Appears she did not play AAU this summer, nor HS last year, because of ACL injury. This has become something of a strategy for Penn WBB, looking for value players whose recruiting has been impacted by injury (almost always ACL). I know this worked out great for Harvard with Harmoni Turner, who was a 5 star recruit before her ACL injury.

From what I saw she got hurt in June ‘22 but was back on the court playing this summer.
She made the All Arizona team her soph year so it will be interesting to see how you plays during her senior year.
