Was playing AAU this summer: https://twitter.com/smn2024/status/168215 230284787...

As for Ivies having recruiting success with top players who were unfortunate to sustain a high school injury and have seen a drop in interest - that is a story as old as time.

I don't follow WBB closely, but it seems clear that it is possible to systematically recruit good balanced classes to Penn, even against HYP and national competition.

Don’t forget about Columbia, the school which crushed the transfer portal this year.

In theory Penn could compete in recruiting , but hasn’t and won’t. The recruiting world is very small and the number of girls each year considering Ivy’s is REALLY small. So it doesn’t take much to tip the scales one way or the other. Penn has done nothing to improve its status over the past 4-5 years. They haven’t beaten Princeton since 2019 and HYP coaches can explain to recruits why that is.

Good afternoon
For those of us that are new and not as familiar with the history and current functioning of Penn Athletics can someone explain what is meant by Penn can’t and won’t improve on their recruiting?
Also in terms to men’s basketball was their recruiting that much better back in the day or did they really just have to out recruit one team? Lastly explain why other sports can play a full schedule and qualify for playoffs but football can’t or won’t in the Ivy League?
Thanks

The use of hasn’t and won’t were interesting word choices - hopefully just to elicit debate.

Since others may not have the perspective to understand your comments about the past 4-5 years in context:

From 2014-2019 Penn won three outright titles and has a 4th shared title with Princeton … over these seven seasons Princeton’s average Her Hoops rating was 31, Penn 61, Harvard 126, Yale 153, Columbia 251. Fairly good Ivy & National success for the Quakers and competitive with the Tigers.

In 2020 when COVID broke out, Penn was 2nd in the Ivies and 52 nationally in Her Hoops - Princeton was 6, Yale 71, Columbia 120 and Harvard 157.

In 2021, who knows what would have happened if the Ivies allowed competition, but Penn would have had a strong team with Eleah a senior, Kayla as Sophomore, Jordan as a Freshman and an experienced supporting cast.

In the past two post COVID seasons (22 & 23) Columbia and Harvard clearly have had greater success than Penn in the WNIT - Princeton goes to the 2nd round of the NCAAs. (Avg. Her Hoops Rankings: Princeton 25, Columbia 63, Harvard 90, Penn 154, Yale 176).

And the Lions, Crimson and Tigers will all be strong in 24 - it should make for a highly competitive season and one that is fun to experience.

But as for “won’t” and Penn’s prospects going forward, I truly don’t understand your negative view on the Quaker’s incoming freshman or the 2024 commitments. Again to help place your comments of “Penn has done nothing to improve its status” in context for those that don’t follow the women’s game as closely - two examples: Incoming freshman point guard Mataye Gayle was named Miss. Georgia Basketball, Georgia High School Basketball Coaches 6A Player of the Year and was a 2023 state champion …. Incoming freshman Abby Sharpe is a 2 time PA Sportswriters Class 6A First-Team All-State and was a 2022 state champion … who knows how any recruit will transition to the college game or the level of effort they will put in to advance their game over a four-year window, but bringing in 1st team GA & PA 6A players feels like doing something to improve its status.

Do I think it’s harder for BCCDP to directly recruit against HYP in any sport - sure, the financial aid differential is real for middle class families. So historically BCCDP need to find talent in other corners of the world than where HYP find talent - certainly harder today given all the AAU showcase events. Princeton and Harvard further have more successful institutional and alumni support for athletics - as evidence by winning ~50% of the Ivy titles since the league started in the 1950s. I don’t believe the playing field is truly level in the Ivies, and unless BCCDP can grow their endowment to HYP level or the scholarship lawsuit results in scholarship, some schools will have clear competitive advantages. Does not mean they will win all the time or other can’t have national level successes - but for now that just makes any Ivy title all the more sweeter.

In the summer of 2019, lead assistant Bernadette Laukiatis left Penn for the HC position at Holy Family. She had been the head recruiter and McLaughlin's lead assistant his entire run at Penn. The ensuing years have, as you say, seen Penn slide down Ivy ladder (and been getting regularly smoked by Princeton). Those two things are not unrelated.

I was just going to ask what happened to Penn's WBB because they've really become non-competitive with the top of the league these last years. I was in person for the catastrophic 2017 loss to Texas A&M in the NCAAs (not sure I've ever seen a meltdown that bad, went from blowing them out to couldn't inbound the ball). Feels like we never recovered. Even the next two seasons pre-COVID Princeton was clear #1 and it has only been downhill from there. Doesn't seem to me this year is any different, so yeah... sounds like a familiar story.

If you know where to look you can see this same thing happen at other programs, too - Oregon being a prime example right now. That is, the person who drives the program's culture is not the one sitting in the first seat on the bench. And it is really is about the culture - the types of payers who are brought in, the values within the team both on the court and off, and the ability to connect with the team. And when that person departs they take the secret sauce with them. It often takes a few years for the results to reflect the impact of the departure, though.
