The Tigers enter the College Insider Mid Major Top 25 at number 18. Yale at #10 and Furman at #11. Hofstra dropped out. Cornell gets some votes.

And 91st on KenPom. (Yale 67th, a little over three points better against the average opponent.)

Coach’s Poll

Semi-related, ESPN named MH "Coach of the Week" in their weekly Power Rankings:

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketba ll/story...

  • Quote:
Coach of the Week: Mitch Henderson, Princeton Tigers

How was Princeton going to follow up its stunning Sweet 16 run as a 15-seed in the 2023 NCAA tournament? Especially without first-team All-Ivy selection Tosan Evbuomwan, starting guard Ryan Langborg, who transferred to Northwestern, and fellow starter Keeshawn Kellman?

Henderson moved three of last season's rotation pieces -- Xaivian Lee, Blake Peters and Zach Martini -- into the starting lineup and, so far, has put more of a focus on the team's perimeter play.

The Tigers opened the season with a 68-61 win over Rutgers in Trenton, New Jersey, giving them an early edge for title of the best team in New Jersey. They backed that up by going to Long Island and grabbing a road win over Hofstra, last season's CAA regular-season co-champion. In the two games, 44.4% of the team's points came off 3s, including 12 made 3s against Hofstra. Henderson doesn't have an Evbuomwan on this year's team, but he has retooled the squad for another NCAA tournament run.

Nice. The trey dependency is going to lead to some roller-coaster emotions for this fan, based on past MH teams.

Coach of the week and he was barely on the bench for the second game of the week? He owes Brett at least a six-pack.

Aaaaaaand…Penn just took down a ranked Villanova team.

This is getting interesting.

There must be total confusion over on the Penn Board. This will make them forget Dingle and Martz . . . for a day.

Looks like the League is better than anyone thought it would be! Which is great!

It's not common to have a freshman break out with 20+ games and play at a high major level. It's early, but no one on the Penn Board saw that coming.

A City of Basketball Love article written after the Bucknell win, but before the St. Joe's game:

https://www.cityofbasketballlove.com/news_article/...

"It was pretty apparent late in his high school year and getting to know him over the summer that he was going to transition really well," Penn coach Steve Donahue said.

Sounds like Steve at least had an inkling.

Well, he should! The rest of us had to wait until he played. Having lost Dingle, it was essential to bring in someone who could replace the points, but Perkins also seems to bring another angle in terms of toughness.

Long way to go before we can fully judge.

Definitely starting out that way though Brown isn’t as strong as expected.

Harvard looks much better than expected - Malik Mack looks very, very good as a frosh and they are big and athletic inside. Killing Northeastern right now, doubling them up.

Yale is extremely good, Cornell looks strong as expected, Princeton stronger than I expected after the grads, a Penn certainly starting much better than I could have anticipated.

Will be interesting to see how the rest of out of conference goes.

It's still very early, but I'm shocked to see Brown struggling so much: 0-3 with a 20pt loss to UNH just now. Before the season began, I had Brown finishing 2nd in the league.

I know Wojcik is a big loss but their "Big 3" is outstanding: Lilly, Owusu-Anane and Anya. And none of those guys are seniors, which means they were likely to make improvements this year, especially Anya who was a ROY candidate till he got injured.
