Tough, gritty win. It’s been said already here but that is the kind of game that we would have lost in recent years and these guys win tonight going away. When they were down 11, I was wondering if our guys thought about being down 11 deep into the second half against Arizona last March. Looking forward to Saturday!

And the women win a nail biter in 2OT after Seton Hall tied the game in regulation after being 5 points down with 17 seconds to go. Skye Belker had another great game and Kaitlyn Chen, who was 4-11 with 7 TOs made 11-15 FTs. Exciting game, the Pirates were a tough out.

Bucknell 11-29-23 11:39 PM - Post#359892

If you told me they'd beat this year's Bucknell team by 14, I wouldn't have been surprised. But I'd assume they were up by 20 with 4 minutes left and pulled their starters. I never imagined they'd trail by 5-11 pts for most of the game.
I missed the live broadcast, so I'll watch the ESPN+ replay, but judging by the boxscore, it looks like Bucknell came out blazing hot from 3 and Pierce's rebounding was held in check. Just glad they avoided a terrible loss and ended up winning by a solid margin.

Big deal, PN. Seems like most of Bucknell are transfers. When Penn played them, they hardly knew each other’s names.

Bucknell shot the ball very well in 1H though Princeton's defense wasn't as tough as they've played most of the year. In the second half, though...Tigers trailed 65-57 with 9 minutes to go. They made 11 straight shots on 11 possessions, 4 of them from 3-point range, and outscored Bucknell 26-4 to lead 83-69 after Pierce's dunk with about 1:20 left. 5 of the first 7 of those shots were by Allocco, he's the player who turned the game around.

The Bucknell announcers kept warning, “When Princeton makes its run…”. They seemed resigned with the outcome and quite content with Bucknell’s game. I thought that we had recovered more than once when we would close the gap to a basket or two. But, Bucknell would have none of it and responded with a run of their own … until Allocco took over????.

After watching the video, Bucknell indeed hit a slew of tough jumpers in the 1st half. Long fadeaway 2s, contested threes, a 40ft three, etc. Our defense was more unlucky than bad. But the Bison regressed to the mean in the 2nd half and so did our guys (in the opposite direction).
I love Peters' defense this season, but it's hard to ignore his low 3pt %. I still think he'd do best playing 20-25mpg instead of the 30-35mpg that the other 4 starters are playing. Maybe Scott should see more minutes to give Blake a breather.

I have to agree that Peters’ best role is 6th man. Scott is big, solid, a good defender and not a bad 3 pt shooter himself. Peters shoots best when he’s fresh. His scrappy defense appears to take something away from his shooting accuracy.as a sixth man he can come in and fire up the O when needed as well as giving Scott a rest.

As I drifted off to sleep last night, I wondered if Scott might get a start in the near future.
Davis is very calm with the ball for a freshman. Those shots shoot fall with greater frequency. Not enough PT to judge his passing ability.

Looked to me like Davis is still trying to get comfortable. He was a little tentative at times, a little too aggressive in shot selection at others. But you can see the tremendous potential.

Thanks for the post and summary. It all happened so quickly I couldn't replay it in my mind.
Allocco is a remarkable player: Excellent from 3, tough around the hoop, and a deadly mid-range jumper.
In a tight game, the mid-range jumper emerges as an important weapon.

Allocco was impressive and his mid-range jumpers were all contested, tough shots. He truly has the oft-touted “three level game” and is the heart and soul of this team.
Watching Davis play last night I was reminded of comments Lee and Henderson have made about Xaivian’s development this year. Lee has said he had to learn to play within the offense and not try to do everything himself. And Mitch has said he wants to see Lee become a better defender. Both observations apply to Davis and he clearly has the skills to make a similar step change in his game.

Breaking up Princeton's starting lineup would be crazy!
Those five are +78 in 122 minutes this season, a pace of +25 points per game. 144 offensive rating (unbelievable), 102 defensive rating (average). That includes pretty much the whole game-winning run yesterday, except when Scott briefly spelled Pierce.
(in a super small sample, Scott replacing Peters is +1 in 13 minutes - still great offensively but really bad on defense, a lot of that is shooting luck though.)
You shouldn't weigh lineup data very heavily but this tracks with my eye test - Princeton's starters have enough shot creation with Allocco/Pierce/Lee, Peters has great chemistry with them, and his shooting will bounce back.

I agree with you whitakk. Why change the starting lineup when you are 6-0??
On another note, I think Davis is going to be an impact player. He reminds me a little of Lee who occasionally was out of control during his freshman year. Davis will correct this. I believe that he is going to be a more than adequate replacement for Allocco next year.

I would not change the starting line-up,
but both Scott and Davis are starting to show
they deserve more minutes.
We will need another "big" besides
Huggins to get some meaningful time
as foul trouble seems inevitable with
our size limitation.
If Austin comes back with the same level
of athleticism he displayed last year,
we could have quite a ride.

To be clear, I wouldn't remove Peters from the starting lineup. He's earned it and the chemistry is too great.
I'd just reduce his minutes from the 30-35 he gets in most games to around 20-25. That way, he'll have fresher legs and (I think) better shooting.
Sub out Peters at the under-12 media timeout. Enter Scott. Put Peters back in at the under-4 media timeout. Exit Scott. Blake for ~24mpg. Jack for ~16mpg.

If Peters weren't defending at a surprisingly high level and I didn't think his shooting will come back I'd be in favor of reducing his minutes a bit. And I think Scott and Davis are making strides already this season as they get more minutes. But they need to spell all the starters, not just Peters.

Seems like the “bigs” cupboard is bare. After Huggins there is Phil Byriel (6’9” 225 lbs.) and Vernon Collins (6’10” 224 lbs.). But they have not seen any non-garbage time minutes through 7 games. Derek Sangster also has not played; he is 6’9”, listed as a G/F, and more of a wing than a banger who can guard the post.
This has not been a problem yet thanks to Zach Martini playing excellent positional defense and avoiding foul trouble.

You may be right. Hoping Collins has some
upside. There were rumblings that he would contribute this year.
Sangster was also a highly touted recruit who looks to have
a pure shot. My guess is his defense needs work, but
maybe he can give us some minutes.
Foul trouble is going to come.
