Line was only -21.5
I'm not so sure Penn will even cover it by halftime.

Bruce Pearl revealed on the Auburn Athletics website in his preview of the Penn game that before SD took the Penn job, Pearl offered him the position of Associate Head Coach. He went on to describe with specifics what an excellent coach Steve is, especially with player positioning offensively and defensively on the court, so that Penn competes well with bigger and more athletic teams ( obviously, Houston not so much). He was hugely supportive of Ira Bowman as well. Well with a listen.

Pearl has been a very controversial figure, going way, way back to the stuff he pulled at Iowa against the Illini when trying unsuccessfully to recruit Deon Thomas.
I can't stand his politics, either, but that's an aside.

They put Thrower in for the first time with 2 minutes to play? What's up with that?

I consider 42 of the 68 points coming from freshmen an enormous positive tonight given the absence of Slajchert. And that’s with an obviously tiring Tyler in particular going 0-fer in the 2nd half.

And no Augie? Hopefully back soon. If this year is gonna be mostly a waste, we should at least develop the underclassmen.

Can't bring myself to watch this team. Nothing against the players at all. I have never had less interest in Penn Basketball. Combo of quality of play and disgust with the university. Even the lure of the Palestra isn't enough.

At least last night was not the complete implosion Houston was against a top 25 team. They proved they can fill some or most of the backcourt scoring void created by Slajchert’s injury. They do need Augie, Laz, and Walter to step up, especially on D. If they can do that, they will be competitive in the League, and as long as they are, I will pay attention and show up for some home games.

Guessing that Augie just is not a good matchup against quicker bigs. Walter is quicker though strength is an issue. I think both will play against the Ivies though the temptation will be to get 30+ minutes out of Spinoso and mix/match the rest.
I was encouraged by this game and the biggest reason was Brown. He had much more ball handling pressure this game without Slachert and he passed the test. McMullen is a little more limited to get more playing time. Laz/Holland in the lineup pushing Smith to the wing is probably the best lineup without Slachert. Smith really needs to hit more 3s also. I am fine with him not shooting much. He has little success driving with the ball so he needs to help spread the defense.

Agreed. Last night was the longest of long shots beating them in their gym. It might have been more competitive if they didn’t make most of the three pointer they chucked in the 1st half. Arguably they had decent looks, but we had similar opportunities and just could not convert. And - we probably have been better from range than Auburn year to date.
Anyway - they’re obviously very good.

*the
why are they so tough at home? for reference last time i was there they destroyed the yale men a few yrs back though u guess bruner went off for bama also one time
crowd close to floor
stands thr whole time
refs were ruthless on penn dribble drives in 2h
auburn jumped them and were allowed to hack down on the dribble
pearls kids play hard and dont take ivies lightly. his respect is obvious w Ira on his bench

I think you are dead-on with all of this. Holland is a wild-card/enigma. I just don't know what to expect there, but he flashes enough to make me think he can be part of the answer, especially on the defensive end. What encourages me is that I'm convinced there are enough useful young pieces on this bench that SD should be able to find useful combinations against any Ivy squad (including PU) until and after Slajchert returns. Depth matters.
