The Ivy League Game of the Week is in New Haven this Friday as the Tigers come into town. Yale has been on an absolute tear recently, and Princeton is smarting coming off a drubbing in Ithaca. Should be a good one.

I agree, but I will be surprised if the Bulldogs are less than 10 point favorites at home.

KenPom has Yale -2 at the moment. I think that's a fair line - you'd expect Princeton to shoot at least a little better than they did on Saturday. I'm also interested to see the battle between Xavian Lee and Bez Mbeng. Even if I think the comparisons to all-NBA players are, let's say, a little premature, Lee has that excellent body control that makes him expert at drawing cheap fouls. Since Bez sometimes struggles with fouling cheaply, if he's not careful, he'll get into foul trouble, which would be bad news for the Bulldogs.

Foul trouble in either direction could decide game. Pearce and Martini Have to deal with Wolffand Knowling's size and skills, but stay on the floor.

Game seems to be on ESPNU at 7PM Fri.

Unbeaten Yale, like Cornell, plays a 10/11-man rotation. This type of depth was tough for the Tigers in Ithaca and it might well be hard on them again in New Haven.
Poulakidas and Mahoney have also really lit it up from distance in Yale's first four league games, three of which were on the road.

The Tigers played their worst 10min stretch of the season during the latter part of the first half at Cornell. One would be justified in thinking they will bounce back with two solid halves Friday.

This should be a titanic struggle.

I don’t have a good feeling about this game — especially since Yale took both season games last year. Tigers were brought back to earth in Ithaca.

I am a traumatized Eagles fan that am now anxious about what can happen after a once-beaten team's second loss, but if the Tigers can get back on track from deep (38% or better), I like their chances against Yale. If they come out shooting like they did in Ithaca, it could be as ugly as the last game.

i dont know what to think.

the teams are so different. if princeton spreads the floor draws fouls and shoots well they win.

if yale imposes its will using its size and shoots fine it probably wins.
but this isnt y-h its two contrasting styles so its not home court adv per se but rather who plays their style better.
yale has shot well from deep due to 2 guys. so rather high beta and they will need mbeng and wolf to get it done imo

yale plays 8 with samson (9)getting only token minutes.

only home game of consequence has been fairfield where we blew a late lead to a team that is meh but has good guard play.
the atmosphere was fit for a morgue.

this game is similar in that princetons guards are better than fairfields though different--the "white out" and free pizzas for the football team will transform the house of payne into cameron indoor.

so?

forgot abt columbia. so two. but de la rosa was hurt
the crowd was so loud i had to mute espn+.

times have changed but i do remember playing a ranked penn team in 94 and my ears hurt in warmups.
and i do remember judson wallace a good dude getting pushed arnd by the football team in like 01 postgame.
think dom martin transferred to yale after so maybe his freshman year.

as james said we had better crowds back when we sucked. those were the days

Like james said, Yale doesn't play a 10-man rotation, at least not really. Coach Jones likes to steal some minutes for younger guys in the middle minutes of the first half (which are probably the lowest-leverage minutes in the game), but the rotation has really mostly been the five starters with Nick Townsend spelling the two bigs, Casey Simmons spelling the guards and wings, and Yassine Gharram spelling Bez.

In Yale's early-season struggles, they had no shooting outside of Danny Wolf, because John and August were in a slump. Now, of course, it's a different story, but James is right that that shooting from those two is a very necessary part of a successful Yale gameplan.

I think a successful Yale game plan involves a lot of slashing to the rim. Bez has done this phenomenally well recently; he had some very high-quality drives to dump-offs against Harvard, and, to put it delicately, Princeton doesn't have an Ajogbor down low to clean up messes. You'd also like to force the issue with foul trouble, because Princeton doesn't want either of its starting bigs on the bench for any length.

I do wonder who Xavian Lee is going to guard. I haven't seen enough to say with certainty whether he's bad at defense, but Mitch seems to assign him to guard a nonfactor on the opposing team whenever possible. That's going to be a bit harder against a Yale team where all five players on the floor can be dangerous.

A complete trainwreck of a first half only sees Yale down 5. Danny Wolf was very poor at perimeter defense, and Yale missed several free throws and blew several transition chances (including on a charge call that was, let's say, dubious). Going to need to be much better in the second half.

Well that was an ugly one. Too many FT misses and wasted chances. But the defense was tremendous, and August and Danny managed to get buckets when Yale needed them. I was glad to be in the Basilica of the Holy Crossover (trying that one out for Payne Whitney) for this one.

i thought we always got the short end of the whistle and no one did anything great except wolf.
they won the 3 pt bank shot competition 2-1 and almost made a 3rd
pierce hit deep 3s making him a tough guard
still we win and showed me something match up wise.
besides outright denial which w 5 out doesnt work without getting worked the 3 point contests were fine
they did deny shooters well and double well.
so live and learn

foul disparity high but getting hit up top and some block charge situations didnt go our way. esp first half with their deep balls deep in the clock just kills your momo

casey simmons got ripped off. jumps over some guy, finshes and gets called for a charge.
then dunks on xaivian lee and gets called for another one.

both were nasty

princeton can beat anyone if they are on.
the beauty is tonight they kind of were

and we shot like garbage at the foul like even early.

and danny wolf put the nastiest crossover on xaivian lee. then broke martinis ankle
and he dunked on some poor sap.
and he cant jump yet
its gross what he can at that size
just gross

even citing the foul disparity as a thing means you werent watching or dont know the game.

1. princeton fouled the last 2 mins on purpose
2. i dont think i saw a post up move from princeton. if you shoot step back 3s almost exclusively you aint getting calls

lastly i tht yale got a bad whistle. still

That was the most remarkable thing to me. Princeton had absolutely zero going on drive-wise, and Yale smothered their back cuts. Absolutely all they got on offense were pull-ups and spot-ups. That's an extremely bad sign for Princeton in general - you don't want to need to shoot 45% or better from three to win.

Sorry, but a 22 foul shot disparity is not explained by
a few intentional fouls. Mbeng fouled Lee on a number of drives.
Yale played well, and deserved to win, but don't try to say the calls went Princeton's way.

I'm not sure I disagree with James all that much here. Princeton just shot jumpers all game, and you don't draw fouls doing that. I dunno if I'd say Yale got a bad whistle, but it was hardly a good one (when the World's Biggest Princeton Homer thinks that Casey Simmons' two charges were baloney, I can point to no stronger evidence that they were).

One reason a team sometimes shoots jumpers on the road is they realize that are not getting calls when they drive.

princeton played very physical the good news it looked like my sons opponent thurs night pushing him and hitting him up top bc he is 6'11 and they are 6'4
the bad news for us is princeton is more skilled on the other end

savage is a good dude.
epic pick up battles in nyc w that guy. funny he plays w the yale alumni
but he also wld tell u what i did

look for princeton to drive the ball in game 2 and not settle as much
it is fools gold in a high level game not too no matter how hot
and wont work back to back
but nothing to do w home or road esp when not tested

sadly for us mitch knows this round 2 will be different.
the adjustment yale made is moving wolf arnd and putting him in the slot post. helped and wldve againsg harvard too

princeton answered w the quick double. theoretically it shld work bc you defend 2 shooters bc you dont have to guard knowling deep.
but the solid passing and cuts answered it
